Not that this post I am making means anything or even has to do with Bioshock Infinite. But a floating city is a really cool idea and is not at all lame.

Never heard of that genre, interesting.

I suppose you could call it "Whale Oil Punk" as the city runs on whale oil rather than steam.:wizard:

Ultimately, I think it's great that this game is somewhat genre-defying and not so easy to put into a box like most other recent games.

No, you're wrong. It has a few elements of Teslapunk but not Cyberpunk. YOu do need computers and cybernetics In order for it to be Cyberpunk, it also needs computer technology to be present and extremely advanced. Reread your Gibson, since he created the genre.

Tesla-technology is part of the steampunk genre. Of course not every steampunk universe has Tesla technology, but some do. Never heard of the term "teslapunk" though.

As for cyberpunk: There are different kind of cyberpunk universes too. Dishonoured seems to be getting a lot of inspiration from the tech-noir subgenre of cyberpunk. The technology being used here in Dishonoured is waaaaaaaay to advanced to be steampunk, yet it's not ordinary sci-fi either. So it's cyberpunk, tech-noir cyberpunk.

It's exactly as it sounds. If Telsa was more popular than Eddison, and his inventions became commonplace, then the world woutl be Teslapunk. That's where you get exaggerated sized generators and everything shooting sparks and electricity.

Here's an example of Tesla Lincoln

Image IPB

Teslapunk and Steampunk are similar in that the machines both look like they could come from the victorian period, but Tesla technology runs and/or interfaces with electricity.

Please wait until we have more actual info and gameplay footage of both games (Bioshock Infinite and Dishonoured) before you're going to act all fanboyish and say this is going to "own" BioShock Infinite. As far as I see, these 2 games aren't even remotely similar, so why you compare this to BioShock is beyond me.

I'm waiting until CDPR releases more info on their upcoming cyberpunk game. Maybe their game be an actual competitor to Dishonoured.

I know, but lots of steampunk stories have steam-technology and tesla-technology being used side by side. Tesla-technology is often part of steampunk. I've never heard of the actual term "Teslapunk" because as far as I know, Tesla technology belongs to the steampunk genre. Tesla technology is often used as a subsitute for magic in steampunk stories. Where high-fantasy stories have their mages with their fancy magic, steampunk stories have thier Tesla engineers with their fancy tesla "magic".

But "teslapunk" and "dieselpunk" are often grouped under steampunk and aren't really genres on their own as far as I'm concerned.

Anyway, my point is: Dishonoured clearly doesn't resemble the steampunk genre or teslapunk subgenre as we know it. I'm still believing this game is going to be highly based on the cyberpunk genre.

I don't feel like giving a lecture on this, so I'll be brief.

First, all derivatives of punk come from Cyberpunk. In The main category of Cyberpunk there are only 3 kinds. Pre-cyberpunk, which is a point where technology is building to a cyberpunk period but the social factors and the technology is not so progressed. An example would be the Terminator movies before John Connor is an adult. Cyberpunk, this is where the technology and social situations cause problems form man. Things like Ghost In The Shell and The Matrix are examples of this. Then there's Post-Cyberpunk which is where there are no social problems but technology is advanced.

Tesla tech is not part of Steampunk. Steampunk takes place in the Victorian era and doesn't use or interface with machinery that uses anything other than water, steam and/or cogs. Teslapunk uses the electrical concepts envisioned by Nikola Tesla. They're both very different and this game uses both but not Cyberpunk.

Seems legit. Except for the last part of your comment. Tesla technology not being part of steampunk? That's just not true. Laser guns that use tesla-like technology are one of the archetype weapons of steampunk.

Look at this steampunk gun and tell me that it doesn't look like it uses Tesla tech:

That's because it is Teslapunk. Like I said, they both look like they could come from the same society/time period, that's why artists usually couple them together. This game uses Tesla and Steampunk like I said, but not Cyber. There's not cybernetics here just steam and Tesla tech.

We'll see about that. There is still very little known about Dishonoured. And honestly, the world of Dishonoured doesn't even remotely look like it's from the Victorian era. This game looks waaaaaaaaay too modern. So it's not steampunk nor teslapunk, it's too modern for that.

So we'll see. My bet is that there are still a few surprises for us about this game that we do not know yet. Maybe this game turns out to be a cyberpunk game after all.

Anyway, what matters is, that I'm super excited! This game looks so promising!

Or you could listen to an interview with the two mean at head of the project talk about creating a Victorian era Steampunk country for this game.

Dishonored- Steampunk Beauty[/quote]

The art's all been revealed for this game, just Steam and Tesla, no Cyber.

Keep in mind this is not an RPG; however, taken together with the premise set up in the CGI trailer, the story seems very intriguing IMO.

Corvo was the bodyguard of the Empress and her secret paramour, until the day she was assassinated and Corvo was framed for her murder. I think Corvo is secretly the father of the Empress' daughter (the young girl in the trailer) and now he's on the run and looking for revenge.

Well I could change my mind.   I've thought a lot about getting it, more than I usually do for something that's not an RPG.  I did like Bioshock.

Maybe I'm too early to judge definitely. But I've been following this game close. I'm pretty confident. So yes, I believe it'll be leagues better than BioShock, unless BioShock's level design and gameplay can compete.

You know its open 'hub world, right? Paths I can take are absolutely plentiful. That, and these guys made the orignal Deus Ex. Devs from that are crafting this jewel up.

Personally, I loved Bioshock 1 and 2, so I wouldn't exactly consider them to be "average" games. The setting of Rapture was really interesting and original, and I've been eagerly awaiting Bioshock Infinite since the first ten minutes of footage was leaked back in 2010.

Incidentally the team at Arkane Studios did the environments for Bioshock 2 (and also worked on Half Life 2, Deus Ex, Thief, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, System Shock and Arx Fatalis).

There is nothing average about BioShock. It's a very original and unique game, whether you like it or not.

You're highly misinformed. Arkane Studios did not make the original Deus Ex.

And we'll see about the "open hub worlds". Deus Ex Human Revolution was thought to have open hub worlds, and we see how that turned out. Personally I wouldn't be surprised if the hubs of Dishonored would be about the same size als the hubs of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Not all that impressive, but still nice.

But are you dissing BioShocks level design? Man, BioShock has one of the best level-desings in modern day games! BioShock was a breath of fresh air among all those linear on-rails go from A to B levels that most modern games give us.

But, judged from the fact that the level design of BioShock 2 was also done by Arkane Studios, I'm sure that the level design of Dishonored will be just as good as BioShock 2, maybe even slightly better!

Harvey Smith, the Co-Creative Director of Dishonored, was the lead designer of both Deus Ex and Deus Ex: Invisible War. There are also other Arkane team members who worked on Deus Ex.

What part of a bigass floating city is stupid or lame?  As far as I'm conserned that setting can't be any cooler.

As for Dishonered this game is looking better and better the more I hear about it.

I apologize if I offended people by ripping Bioshock. No offense intended, in fact I'm going to watch a LP mid game and see what it looks like. Maybe I didn't get far enough. Might re-get it, too...could use a fun action game that's more laid back once I am done with my enjoyable challenge of Dark Souls.

The trailer stayed true to the stealth focus of this game. Dishonored is a stealth game. Also, I agree how amazing the song was. I also liked the electronica after the first verse...then showing the atmosphere we will be playing in. It seems it will be gritty and sad. And that plague. It looks horrendous. No surprise half the population of Dunwall has already died. I also noticed steam pouring out of industrial chimneys in the one scene they showed of a whale. The atmosphere looks very sickly, corrupted and sad. I'm sure sadness is an emotion that will be experienced in atmosphere and plot. That cute little girl looked innocent, and her mom was butchered viciously. Had to be hard for her. It's probably Corvo's main driving force. That, and making sure he gets merciless vengeance for the wrongs of what was done to him. How badly somebody Dishonored his life and name.

The Half-Life art cues sprinkled in, obviously with machine tech and design and other elements, seem like they are going to fit in perfectly. Brilliantly, imo. Brings some nostalgia.

I also love the environmental details rendered graphically. That one palace interior with the decadent fittings looked spectacularly detailed, and shadow and light effects seem incredible as well. Remember, this trailer was all in-game footage. It was a gameplay trailer.

I'm also a very happy Sajji that solid RPG mechanics are being incorporated. It's no doubt a stealth action game, but I hope there is a concise small inventory, and I hear skill progression of some sort in prevalent. And upgrades and customization for gadgets, trinkets, magic and weapons.

Looks like Spike TV will have exclusive coverage of gameplay from Dishonored from E3 in the next few days. I hope they try not to go the 'badass super explosions' route, but instead showcase the games intricate and diverse stealth gameplay.

Also....preorder bonuses announced. Too early for me to preorder, since its so far away, but its nice to know those who prefer different retailers aren't left out in the cold. GameStop, Target, WalMart and Amazon each have a particular preorder bonus. I like the sound of a whale oil USB lamp...whatever the heck that is :P

The tarot cards sound like fun.

Here is the description:

" This is a 78 cards deck that doesn't match usual divinatory decks because we envisioned it as a typical deck from the alternate world of Dunwall. All artworks are original and were created by Arkane; there's even a rules set for an original game called "The Game of Nancy" in the box. "
