That would be one of the few incentives to join. That and getting access to cutting edge technology, and perhaps biotic research.Douglas wrote...
Space travel is most likely very expensive,so the best way to get off world and see some of the galaxy would probally be to enlist.
But otherwise, no.

It sounds like they get good medical benefits, what with the genetic enhancements and all, and armed conflict doesn't seem to be that common,

Possibly, though joining the military at the time of extragalactic invasion wouldn't be the best idea.
Well you don't have many options:
1.Join and fight.
2.Try to flee.
3.Get indoctrinated/huskified.
Anyway the OP wasn't saying in ME3, but in the ME universe.

I´d like to be a colonist, a farmer maybe, and taking almost all the time studying all about the cultures of the galaxy

Nope, wars are stupid and unjustified,
Tell that to the aggressive neighbors who've decided to go around kicking in doors and taking over your city. Or, in the ME context, tell that to the Reapers who are content with nothing short of extinction of your species.
Pacifism will only get you victimized.

Well most wars are not unjustified, stupid maybe, but not unjustified. I agree with the rest of your post though. Maybe an anthropologist of sorts or a philosopher, that would be fun.

Edit: okay, I have to admit. AI research which actually produces intelligent, reasoning machines opens up a world of interesting philosophical questions.

Anthropology maybe, but wouldn't xenobiologist or archeaologist studying ancient alien ruins be so much more interesting than any modern, mundane profession?

Well current anthropologist studys pretty much humanity. I imagine in the Mass Effect universe you would compare and contrast different alien races and cultures. Sounds like fun to me. And for philosophy I could just imagine a new branch of philosophy springing up to study AI's like you mentioned.
That would be very interesting.
