i highly doubt there will be, as much as i love RTS the amount of people who enjoy the genre is small compared to the shooter fan-base. On top of this they would most likely make it for consoles, then port it to PC. RTS never really worked without mouse and keyboard.

It's a popular genre.

I did not say it wasn't, only that shooters have alot more players willing to play them.

I didn't say you said it wasn't. Why jump to conclusions?

But to be a bit more precise, the genres popularity is similar to fighters in that they both owe a lot of their popularity to competitive gamers. It would take years worth of expertise and research to get maximum profit out of an ME RTS which isn't really a thing that the shooter genre has to worry about. It's not that the genre is a poor medium for telling stories (Those of us who are familiar with Blizzard, Relic and Massive Entertainment have seen the genres story telling potential), it's just that there are literally millions of people all over the world who want to flex their e-muscle in the strategy genre.

The ratio of competitive gamers to everyone else is a bit more even with RTS than with shooters.

This would be an amazing basis for an RTS, and I think a lot of the unknowns from the beginning of the thread have been answered in ME3. ME is perfect for the genre, it has exploration, research, military, and diplomacy already threaded fairly tightly into the story. Personally, I think the balance is there too. There's a constant shifting of territory and power in the ME universe. I think the framework is there.

I'll be honest, I haven't played any of the new RTS's. I was the one playing AoEII, WC3, and Empire Earth on my old Compaq desktop. But I did recently pick up a cheap copy of Empire at War about a year ago. The space/land system was top-notch.

The day I can take back Rannoch as the Migrant Fleet is the day I'm finally content. Until then, beg and beg.

I figured I should elaborate on why I would not buy an ME RTS.

I'd rather see Mass Effect co-op game. :)

You would have squad of 4 and you would go around galaxy doing missions. You could create your own character and pick it's race.

But RTS wouldn't be a bad option either.

8 months ago! This guy should predict about ending dlc's as well.

...ME3 was the last game in the trilogy, hence "tri"logy.

I've been thinking about their role too, and they came across as most likely a NPC race. Possibly a scattered, barbarian-ish randomely placed race. They would play a part in scenarios, but just something to take a planet away from in MP.

You can't have ME Space combat because the ships blow up incredibly fast. Read the codex

But ground units. Completely different. An RTS would be almost as good as a Dragon Age RTS

First Contact war

Krogan rebellion

Rachni War

Prothean-Reaper war

Batarian-Alliance war

non linear game. Pick your faction. total war

It could be great but i can't think of any game which has been converted to an RTS which was improved. They're normally just half arsed money grabs something EA is fond of so we might see an ME RTS.

Definetely something I'm worried about. It would make an amazing RTS, but I don't want to see another Halo Wars.

I'd play a Mass Effect RTS before I'd play a C&C game, but please don't rape your own IP if it's gonna be crap. (In terms of being raped, C&C's got nothing to lose)

Seeing that it's a spinoff. I don't think an RTS would ruin ME. Did Operation Special forces ruin Mortal Kombat?

This thread's a survivor. I'd like to see Mass Effect remain RPG exclusive, but I doubt it's going to happen.

PS: Bravo to the guy who predicted the 4-person squad multiplayer. ;)

Not necessarily, and it doesn't have to be the post-human ME either. Doesn't even have to be the same cycle. The MP would only make sense as current "Trilogy Era" ME, but The Campaign could very well be Prothean or even pre-Prothean

I don't do RTS .....that's what Command & Conquer is for. I think Mass Effect should stay RPG.
I don't mind them doing it so long as the RPG that is ME series continues on a separate line. I cannot play strategy games....I am useless and don't like them.

I would buy a Mass Effect RTS/Total war style game.
If they fix the endings to ME 3 that is, and the RTS does not detract from other RPGs they work on. Maybe work with another studio? Here are ones I would talk to about working with or at least getting advice from if an RTS/Total War style game was done:
Relic Entertainment (they did dawn of war series, and CoH)
The Creative Assembly (It is unlikely they will do the project, but if the Total War style route is where you go, they are the ones to talk to.)
Robot Entertainment ( The remains of Ensemble Studios (Age of Empires guys)

If you made it a space combat sim type game:
Relic Entertainment (they also did Homeworld series)
Most Wanted Entertainment ( The remains of a little known Hungarian studio called Mithis Entertainment that made one of the most in depth space combat sims to date: Nexus: The Jupiter Incident)

Regardless of how this goes, The story development should remain In-house (assuming they fix endings, otherwise it is a moot point)

HOLD THE LINE!

A mass effect game in a Total war mould set in the Krogan rebellions would be excellent.

I would really like a Mass Effect RTS.

It would be nice if game wasn't just throwing lots of units at each other. It should be a game in which cover is very important and battles between units take some time and require the right choice of units (could be Units similar to the classes in the RPG) and tactics.
Plus a bit RPG. Units surviving many battles gain experience and can train special abilities. So Soldier-like infantry can use ammopowers and biotics learn new powers.

Or as an Space-RTS: Battles really should take some time. If there are huge fleets fighting each other and dreadnoughts firing their huge guns, I want some time to plan my next move. Plus I want that smaller ships like frigates having a purpose. In the games I know the small ships lose their purpose very soon.

The setting could be a mix of different times. Maybe in the form of different campaigns: The first contact war (as some kind of tutorial), the krogan rebellions, the morning war, the Eden Prime war / the war against the Reapers.

But I think we have to wait some time until we get anything with mass effect in the future (except DLCs of course).

Random Rambling:

I'd love to see some class-based special units, maybe even the N7 Spec Ops. What I'm afraid of is another Halo Wars, where there were fews units, the special units weren't balanced at all (either heavily overpowered or very squishy). I'd love to see a graphical building system, were you could build cities and bases on planets, and then view their progress, not just numbers on a screen. As for units, I think the best special unit system is going to be WC3-esque, where different heroes have different unlockable powers.

Maybe even a Paragon/Renegade system, where attacking certain people, diplomatic options, etc., make you either feared or respected.

By the way...

I read that in the Illusive Man's voice, seems fitting.

Mass Effect has the makings of a truly epic RTS.

It has enough unit diversity, for starters, to do either a ground-based or space-based RTS.

Actually, even a turn-based game would work...possibly even better, because you could incorporate both space and ground easily, plus a complex economic system.

Or even a hybrid; have all combat, be it ground or space, take place in RTS fashion, while structure and economic building, along with exploration, take place in turn-based form.

It could work wonderfully...unfortunately, twitch-gaming seems to be the rule of thumb these days rather than cerebral games.
