You're confusing 'gay' with 'potentially attracted to the same gender'.

They're different things. 

A former squadmember being open to a relationship with a Shepard of the same gender as them would not be gay. They'd be bisexual.

There is no 'change' involved, no choices made.

If character A is bisexual, but only ever romances men, we'd conclude that she's straight. We have no way of knowing that she is bisexual up until the point that she romances women as well.

The only thing that doesn't make any sense is the fact that you claim it doesn't make any sense.

once again, you keep hinting at the idea that there will be multiple same-sex relationships on your ship. THAT, my friend, is absurd. First of all, it's likely you'll only "romance" 2 crew members anyway. Second of all, the crew will be smaller than the whopping TEN members, so at best, ur talking about the CHANCE to have a same-sex relationship with 2 of wut, 6 crew members? Maybe even 5? So just drop the whole "OMG, Mass Effect is ruined forever because the possibility of having a same-sex relationship with 1 of my 5 crew members is programmed in the game and even tho I'm not going to initiate the romance with that same-sex character, it's the worse thing ever!!!!"

 Here's hoping that Garrus comes out of the closet, and romances the least favored male character in the game but will not engage with Sheperd. Just have Garrus and him start off with calibrations, and then they move on to some more intense maintanence with each other thus becoming a full fledged couple in the end. The only way to eliminate this from happening is to play as the dreaded FemShep and romance the least favored male and crush Garrus's hopes and dreams!  I'm dead serious at this point. These topics are really getting old. 

Besides Garrus is clearly closeted gay. Why else do you think he wanted to constantly be locked up in that room with that giant cannon? Ugh.
