I don't recall any back story about this anywhere. Did the devs ever say anything about it?
How long have Shepard and Anderson known each other?

I would say that Shepard and Anderson know each other primarily by reputation before the events of ME1.
That being said, nothing in the story thus far contradicts saying that Anderson and Shepard had been serving together for a while before being transferred to the Normandy. No matter your background there are several years that go unaccounted for between your 'defining moment' and your assignment to the Normandy.

It's never explicitly stated, but everyone on the SR-1 is introducing you to him when you begin ME1, so I think the Eden Prime mission is probably their first meeting.

Yeah this has always been a little confusing cause it seems like the Normandy is their first time serving together but Saren also refers to you as Anderson's protege which would seem to suggest a longer relationship. The latter could be Saren misinterpreting Anderson's presence (past potential standing with new potential), but the introducing sbvera mentions could just be for the benefit of the player.

I've always had the impression you've been his XO for quite some time.

Same here. He speaks to you in a familiar way, and people treat Shepard like that. I think the pedagogical introduction to the captain is just exposition.

I agree. When Anderson and Udina speak together before the opening about "...how about Shepard..?." I would assume at that point they hadn't worked together much because Anderson didn't mention it. But the time period between that audio and the Eden Prime mission is unknown. Definitely Shep's record and the work they did together before Eden Prime contributes to Anderson's belief in what Shep (and his subordinates) say about Reapers and all while everyone else disbelieves.

I thought devs kept a bible around with backstory in case they need it. It could very well have been years between the opening and Eden Prime and the Normandy. Mind = blown. Shepard may not have even been in the special forces at the time of the opening. The opening to ME does imply that they didn't start grooming him/her to be a possible Spectre candidate until that moment.

Shep and Anderson might have worked together on a mission in the past as well. Likely a butter bar Shep and a silver bar Anderson. Military has the funny way of working at times where you get stationed with someone disappear for a few years and get reunited.
