There's three LI's in ME1: Ashley, Kaidan and Liara.\\

And then an extra nine in ME2:
Garrus, Thane, Jacob
Miranda, Jack, Tali
Kelly, Samara, Morinth

That's a total of twelve (Eleven if you consider what happens to one of your squad mates in ME1) LI's. And since it's already been confirmed not everyone will be squad members that have been in previous games, I'm curious how they intend to handle this.

Thane is a dead man (Kinda literally...) and Morinth's romance... well, need I say more? Plus, there's also what CAN happen to Kelly if you are late saving your crew. Plus, it's been confirmed they're adding at least one extra LI for option of gay Shepard.

Nobody really knows.

If I had to guess, I'd say we can have conversations with the characters wherever they are in the universe.

Or it may be that the squad is very malleable and we can pick and choose who to bring along on the Normandy.

It's tremendously complicated, I don't envy Bioware's writing team. I trust whatever they do will allow us to connect with old characters while still keeping the story interesting.

Amen to that, mate. At least Garrus is confirmed to be on the squad provided he survived, I can have my lovable Turian back.

Not sure yet, we can only speculate.

There is a huge movement for Thane's cure - I wonder if that will actually happen, or if Bioware will be a troll and kill him off anyways.

Depending on your choice, Kaidan or Ashley will return in ME3 as Specters, possibly assigned to watch your Shepard and the Normandy. Not sure yet. Then he or she will most likely join you on your mission.

Garrus is back on Palaven, the turian home world. My theory is he is taking care of his mother. Garrus will return as squad mate to possibly help you convince the turians to fight with you. Maybe he'll join you for the rest of the mission, but I'm not sure. I'd think with his service with you, he may have earned some respect from his people.

On Tali's Wiki page, it states that she will be returning because she has some "unfinished business" with Shepard. That sounds to me like an ill omen, but I could just be paranoid. Whether she will be a fulltime squadmate is unknown - at least to me.

Liara will be a fulltime squadmate, I think. Since she is the new Shadow Broker, she may have returned to aid you in finding better information on the Reapers and how to kill them.

I think Samara has returned to the Justicars, out of Shep's reach. And Morinth may have run off again, killing as she pleases.

Jacob...I don't know what Jacob would do. Work in another Cerberus division, maybe? No, the Illusive Man may kill him. I'd be interested to find out.

Miranda - not sure about her either.

That's all I know at least. We all may learn more later in the year.

Regarding Thane, there is a middle path for BioWare to take- the lung transplant. It's actually not a cure, because the Kepral's has already started to spread to other body parts, but it will buy him time and make him more viable for ME3. One can avoid the miracle cure and just killing him off at the beginning.

As for the others, I like to imagine they're keeping their heads down and doing assignments/getting intel for Shepard during their trial. No more of this 'we were your team' crap- they are my team and we should be working towards defeating our wannabe overlords.
