I've been looking into trying Mass Effect 2 on insanity for fun. Now aside from the achievement, does beating the game on insanity unlock anything special for a new character or when I import one into Mass Effect 3 in March?
Mass Effect 2 insanity benefits?

During the character creation screen it says, based on your achievements, you are entitled to these abilities. Does insanity do anything there?

By playing the game on insanity you will get an achievement and the fun of a harder re-playing.
Nothing more. Enouhg for me tho.
So the answer to your questions is 'no'.

No.
That's why they call it insanity: "...doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results"--Albert Einstien.

People are saying no but if you want the Geht pulse rifle on Tali's recruitment mission the mission must be done on either hardcore or insanity. I think that's worth mentioning
