Perhaps this has been asked before but was there ever an explanation provided as to how Ruck managed to survive in the Deep Roads for so long after eating darkspawn flesh and becoming linked with the darkspawn taint? He doesn't show signs of beinga ghoul and conventional wisdom is that if he were infected with the taint he'd perish farily quickly. He talks about how the darkspawn ignore him now because he's part of the darkness and they think he's one of them. He also says he was able to perceive the Archdemon's arrival, so presumably that meant that he was connected to the darkspawn taint in some capacity but he seems to be connected in a way more like a Grey Warden than a ghoul. How was this possible? There was no information about dwarves being any more resistant to the taint that I recall but he never went through tthe joining. He just ate dead darkspawn didn't he? Why was that enough for him? The taint seems virrulent enough to kill almost anything it touches. Although as I recall there were stories of others doing the same thing he did, so this wasn't the first time it happened either.

I thought he showed rather a lot of signs of ghoulishness. His eyes are turning white, his stance is bent and he shuffles. His speech is broken and he knows what he's becoming. If you mention his mother he says something like, "no talk of pillows and blankets and stew" and clearly doesn't want to be reminded that there is something outside of what he is now and what he is becoming.

Ruck is very sad, because he's at the stage where he knows what's happening but can't stop it.

Ghouls don't always die quickly, some people last longer than others. But Ruck is definitely at the final stages before he becomes a full blown mindless slave to the darkspawn.

But he'd been down there for years. I thought they die pretty long before that.

He wasn't necessarily tainted that whole time, though. He originally fled because he killed someone and would be an outlaw and disgrace to his family if he returned to Orzammar, so he lived in the deep roads. It's possible for much of that time, he lived close enough he could scavenge food to survive from dead patrols or game animals (nugs and deepstalkers that he could catch) but eventually came to some point where he had gone without food for a long time, and was forced to either eat dead darkspawn, or corrupted creatures that carried the taint. We don't know for certain how he got the taint, only that Oghren suggests that eating darkspawn seems most likely.

I believe that Ruck mentioned that if you eat darkspawn flesh, you get the taint, and the darkspawn would leave you alone, since they'd think you're one of them. Ruck does mention eating darkspawn flesh, and I doubt he did it because he happened to be hungry. However, I'm not sure why the darkspawn would avoid Ruck, but attack the wardens on sight. Perhaps they don't like having pointy objects pointed at them?

The Wardens are tainted differently than ghouls, in a way that the darkspawn know is threatening to them.

If I remember correctly, in Awakening, when you´re in kal-hirol or whatever that place is called you meet the inferno golem and the lost. The lost says something about how he can sense the wardens but he also realizes right away that they are not darkspawn. So I believe Skadi_the_Evil_Elf is correct about the wardens being tainted differently. The joining ritual itself involves magic. It uses darkspawn blood, a drob of blood from an archdemon and lyrium plus some other things we dont know if I remember right.

Ruck on the other hand ate darkspawn flesh and carries the taint I believe. So yes they both carry the taint but do so differently.

Yeah, just eating darkspawn flesh or blood gives a person the blight. The Joining ritual not only involves magic and lyrium, but often, archdemon blood. The darkspawn taint is transformed in some way that allows the Warden to become a true and innate threat to not only the darkspawn, but the archdemon himself. And if the events in the book The Calling are anything to go by, when Wardens succumb to the taint, they don't become normal ghouls like Ruck, something else seems to happen instead.
