Hello! I am brand new to this game (and ridiculously adore it). I have had a single significant problem, though. Very rarely, unrelated to heat, length of time in game play, or changes to settings, my dialog options do not load in conversation. I've been able to "wing it" through by selecting 1-4 (usually 1) and hoping my words don't terribly impact the game. It's happened when I have my first nightmare and Alistair discusses it with me, at Redcliffe after I've fought off the undead, and a couple other places I can't remember offhand.
BUT now it's happened at the Landsmeet as soon as I walk in! I can't wing my way through such a critical dialog. My usual technique of hitting "1" until the dialog ends makes everyone attack me! ..... after 97 minutes of cutscenes!
specs:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz
1994 MHz clock speed, 7.91 GB physical memory
NVIDIA GeForce GT 445M graphics card, 3gb dedicated memory
DirectX 11 (Aug2009) or later
I'm using the Ultimate Edition which claims the patches are all up to date. I didn't patch when it said patching UE could cause problems.
I've tried rebooting and reloading, and I've played at least the subject of the nightmare a few times and with different characters.
I emailed EA about it and the response I got back was about firewalls and internet connectivity issues (I'm assuming the bot didn't read my message correctly). In my searching it seems like 1 or 2 other people have had this issue, but I couldn't find any solutions posted either. I'm not very familiar with digging through forums I'm afraid. So if this solution HAS been posted, if someone could please link me I'd be very grateful!
I really hope someone can help me because I would sure like to finish the game!
Thank you --
Beka

First, mobile graphics cards aren't supported. I have seen it play fine on some laptops, but mobile hardware is generally not up to gaming. Second, what drivers are you using for your graphics card? The game does not play well with the newest beta drivers from Nvidia. Third, have you tried assigning the game affinity to a single core? There are directions in the solutions round up thread pinned to the top of the forum. The game has difficulty addressing multiple cores. This typically causes crashing, but a video glitch could be a symptom as well.
As a stop-gap, the Dragon Age wiki (google Dragon Age wiki) has all of the critical conversation choices listed out so you don't need to blindly punch numbers. (the toolset has all conversations in it as well-directions for use also on the wiki)

Also, do you have any 3rd party Mods running? I had a different problem with the Landsmeet myself but it was because I had the "Tal's Storage Chest" mod running.

Sami jo - thank you -- I will look into assigning the game affinity to single core (only slightly beyond my geekspeak!). I'm using the standard drivers, no beta drivers here. version is 8.17.12.6721 which is up to date. It probably is a core issue, though this machine was purchased for me for its "gaming ability." I'm disabled so it being on my lap is critical!
Bartoni -- no I'm not running any 3rd party mods. I have all the dlc that came with the ultimate edition but I haven't branched out yet!
Thank you, lovely forum folk! I will follow your suggestions!

=) Glad we could help. Let us know if it works, and if not we'll see if we can figure out what the problem is

Well, sadly, I'm still struggling. I took a look at the affinities threads and went with 4, 5, 6, 7. Still having trouble. Should I take it down to fewer cores even than that for an i7? I did actually manage to get through Landsmeet. What I found in the wiki was what to say, not which numbers the dialogs were (if that does exist, I'm not clever enough to find it!) -- but by watching a youtube video of someone and jotting down which numbers they selected I was able to get the Landsmeet on my side.
It SEEMS like whenever this glitch happens, Alistair is around. Maybe he's just too fancy for me
I can try taking the game down to even fewer cores, but I'm not quite experienced enough about the drivers on my video card to uninstall them and install an earlier version that I don't own. This laptop is brand new so it arrived with the drivers it has.
I took off persistent gore and shimmering objects, too. I use the hell out of my tab key anyway. I really hope this isn't just because I'm using nvidia on a laptop! Because there's still so much replay value left! I've already gone on to Awakening and started a rogue back at the beginning because I adore this game so much!

I would pull it all the way down to only one or two cores. An i7 will be plenty fast even with only one core. There are instructions on how to figure out which drivers you are running and how to roll back graphics drivers in the solutions round-up thread. Drivers are free. If you are going to run a laptop rig, Nvidia is a good choice.
If the glitch is specific to having Alistair in the party, you might have some issues with his dialogue files. A reinstall might fix it. (I would try setting the core affinity and graphics drivers first).
And yes, the game is addictive, even with the bugs and glitches. Once you have the game working smoothly, I'd suggest peeking at the community fixit project pinned in this forum as well. Modders have fixed many of the game's remaining bugs.
