If the Edge letters page gets inundated, they will have a response. Maybe even a feature. Due to popular demand, Edge has recently started featuring sports games so there's precedent. But I doubt there will be another review. Either way, next issue or the one after, I expect to see a slew of letters about story in videogames and Edge's particular line on Dragon Age :-)

As for Edge reviews, I adore them. In their way, they're amazing. I just love how outrageous they can be. Though usually they reserve that for movie tie-ins and the like. Their WET review was spot on, for instance. But this is neither the first nor the last time Edge have been out of kilter with wider opinion. Sometimes it can have you cheering for them not leaping on the bandwagon, other times you wonder if they were playing the same game you were.

Also, I bet Edge wouldn't give a damn that they're not well known by the average joe gamer. Edge is a place for developers to flog their talents for publishers and for professionals in the industry to find a job. Managing to interest a few plebs into buying the magazine in addition is just a bonus on the side, heh.

EDIT: And there's a fine point. I just remembered. Edge might be a multi format mag, but they couldn't give a damn about PC. It's rare they review pc games. At all. Perhaps Future don't want to cannibalise PC Gamer sales as I imagine that's reasonably upmarket itself? But yeah, if Bioware had managed a better 360 port, DA would probably be an 8 >.<

Maybe the reason you've never heard of Edge is due to fact that its decent mag rather then some trash that rates every game 9/10

I mean none of you have a decent example of why it deserves a higher score, other then the fact that Bioware made

Just except that Dragon Age is a fanboy game, only fanboys are enjoying, only fanboys could enjoy it

Oh god, are you still here? What;s the matter, have the WoW servers broken down and you've got nowt better to do than post tripe in the mean time?

WoW? you mean the other big RPG filled with generic elves, Dwarfs, fanboys...ect, I'm not exactly a big fan of Dragon Age, not sure why I would play the same game with monthly sub

And I have to wonder, why are you still defending this tripe?

I think the concern for me, had I read the review, is biasing.  If I read restaraunt reviews, and Taco Town gets a particular review with critisisms such as "the food was spicy" or "they didn't have french fries," I'd have to wonder whether or not the reviewer hated Mexican food.  Also, I'd suspect the magazine as being lazy, unprofessional, or amateur.

A blog, forum, or user review can certainly be completely subjective and opinioned.  If I pay money for reviews (or, at the very least, expect them to be relied on), I want it to be as objective as possible, since the point of the review is to help me judge whether the product is right for me, not the reviewer.

Best way tog et a fair review of a game is go on Gamespot and read 10-20 "User Reviews" (the good and the bad) on a particular game. Then generate your own opinion if you'd like it or not. Magazines are hugely biased. Every single FPS that comes out gets a near perfect score, while RPGs have to be masterpieces to get 1 point less. Oh wait...Dragon Age got a 5....lol.

Edge is a magazine? Or is it a website like Gamespot? IGN?

I've never heard of "Edge" and I've been gaming for 18 years.

Mostly Console some PC.

Or is it some kind of snobbish elitish aesthetic thing to read Edge?

Oh and MW2 sucks. Multi is a lot of fun but SP is really this-plot-makes-no-sense ZOMG Knife throw! stuff that MW1 did better.

And don't forget gaming magazines and sites routinely trade advertising revenue for better reviews; it's a gussied-up bribe, really. Maybe Edge is trying to send a subtle message to EA: "Next time try offering us money!"

No, edge is not famous. They have never been and never will be. They aren't carried in most stores, there circulation numbers prove it.

Edge is a specialist magazine. It has a far higher text:images ratio than all other games magazines and doesn't appeal to kids, which most shops still assume to be games magazines' target audience.

I don't agree with most of this review, I'm not trying to say Edge is always right, it's just one voice. But it seems like tons of you are so insecure in your own opinions that you need unanimous approval, and you seek to declare all dissenting opinions invalid. It's ridiculous.

It's really the other way around; if you love Dragon Age and you're grossly offended that some people dare disagree, it just became the worst magazine ever.

No, it would be to call it an "average game" instead of a "great game."

And why would that be a kick to your balls? At worst, it's a kick to Bioware's balls. Are you sharing scrotii?

Wtf?!
I mean there is some problem with the console-version but 5/10?
Edge is like the most respected magazing in the business (along Famitsu)

To put it in perspective, here are other edge scores:

Mass Effect - 7/10
Jade Empire - 7/10
KotOR - 9/10
Baldur's Gate 2 - 8/10
The Witcher - 5/10
Morrowind - 6/10
Oblivion - 8/10
Fallout 3 - 7/10
Diablo - 7/10
Diablo II - 6/10

It's pretty damn obvious they hate rpgs as a genre, and are biased like crazy. The magazine is an epic failure.

You gonna tell me Dragon Age is an average game?
And what do you compare it with then?
Tell me whats above DAO, if its just "avg". And btw 5/10 is not avg, how often does a "good" game get 5/10, no, 5/10 games according to most magazines and reviews sucks.
Anything below 8/10 usually isnt worth paying for, and EDGE has given really crappy games above a 5/10 so I dont buy that at all.

They "hate" RPGs when the lowest score you can find is a 5, and the average is 7?

This just shows that general perception of review scores has been ruined. The average game should be 5. These days, if a game gets a 7/10 it's considered a failure. This makes no sense.

Maybe the reviewers don't consider The Witcher to be above average. They consider ALL OF THE OTHERS to be above average, with KotOR being excellent and Oblivion being damn good.

I personally think they overscored Oblivion and maybe underscored Baldur's Gate 2. I think most gaming press overscored MGS4, Halo games and many others. You know what lets me do this? Personal opinion. It can differ from magazines and it doesn't upset me when it does. Because everything is subjective.

It's never been that way.  Ever.

But even ignoring that, the scale exists so that we can compare games.  If Game A scores 7 and Game B scores 5, then the reviewer is saying that Game A is better than Game B.

Therefore, Edge Magazine believes that KotOR is better than BG2.  In addition, Wii Baseball is better than DA:O.  Finally, FFXII (which is perhaps the least inspired game in the series) is a perfect game.

... Right?!

EDIT:  And actually, they imply that every game on that list of western RPGs is better than DA:O except for The Witcher.  Come on, really?  I don't think so.

Thats the point your missing, the avg of the best rpg's out there according to EDGE is a  7.
You heard me a 7.
I doubt very much that any site has anything close to that. Go ahead see what GS/IGN etc gave these rpg's diablo, oblivion, dragon age etc and see the avg.

FFXII got 9/10. I don't know why people think it got 10/10. I read the review myself, in paper form, from the original magazine.

I know tons of people that preferred KotOR to BG2. And I know tons of people that preferred FFXII to other recent entries in the series. Is that really completely outside of your ability to comprehend?

If Wii Baseball succeeded at much of what it tried to do and is generally enjoyable, then yeah, that reviewer might think it more worthy than the Dragon Age reviewer thought Dragon Age is.

Raxtoren: YOU THINK they are the best RPGs out there. That is YOUR OPINION. All of this is RELATIVE. There is no objective truth in the sky about which RPGs are most enjoyable. I guess Edge doesn't think they are the best RPGs out there.

GameSpot and IGN are terrible, terrible reviewers. Oh, sorry, I guess I should mention that that last statement was my opinion, because apparently no one can understand the difference.

These are some of the best rpgs to come out in the past decade, not just the average run of the mill rpg pool. The only game on this list to get the right score was kotor. Seriously, how can you give fallout 3 a 7/10? I'm not some bethesda fanboy either - it was a truly fantastic game. It was game of the year on ign, and yet, they gave it a 7/10?

BG2 was easily the best crpg of its time, and it is frankly, a friggin' classic. It is the best of bread of innovation and polish from an entire era of crpg gaming. And they give such a game... an 8? Look, You can squabble over 8 and 9, but you have to be a joke magazine to not give that game at least a 9. It's just not possible. It is so well developed, is so polished, is has so much content, and it's so replayable. It actually does so many more things right that many current-gen games get wrong, and it's 10 years old!

Diablo 2 is an incredibly addicting and fun game, even if it is a bit shallow. People still play it in droves even today. And they give it a 6? Even the first diablo has a huge legacy behind it. It might not be the most playable game today, but in it's time, it was an incredibly addictive and polished game, and in a way, created an entire sub-genre for rpgs. Both of these games shouldn't get scores less than 8.5 or 9.

That magazine is a joke. It really is. You can't just deduct 2 points for "being an rpg". That's what they are doing.
