There's clearly a number of people on this forum who have played and enjoyed a lot of Bioware RPGs in the past and just don't think Dragon Age is all that great. You can't just dismiss everyone who disagrees with you as being some kind of 'FPS fanboy'. It just doesn't make sense! Nobody can take that kind of argument seriously.

There's a lot of nice things I could say about Dragon Age, but I found the general combat mechanisms to be broken, boring, not much fun, and that's what you spend most of the game doing. The story and the presentation and the lore are all well and good, but the bad combat lets the whole game down, in my opinion.

Maybe you thought it was really great? That's okay too; I'm glad you enjoy the game. But I don't understand why you wig out so much when people disagree with you.

Because DA:O does not deserve a 5/10. As a game, it's at LEAST 8/10. Does not matter if you don't like it yourself.. I don't like Uncharted 2 myself but If I reviewed it, would I give it a 5/10 just because of that? No. That'd be stupidity.

I completely disagree. If you think a game is terrible and you give it a good review, then I'd say you're being a terrible reviewer.

Read my post again...  there is a difference between a terrible game and a game you don't like... and as a reviewer you should know the difference and not only rate the game according to your likes or dislikes... but figures, though... if you think the edge review is good and you think this is how a professional reviewer should review games....

Always respected Edge and I'm quite surprised people haven't heard of it.
This score is very baffling and makes me want to read the review and find out what on earth made them pull out that low a score.
7/10 is a pretty darn good score off them but 5 seems just a bit silly.
Saying that I have the PC version and can only say with certainty that if that score was given for this version it would be a nonsense. If this was a comment on the quality of the console port I couldn't comment as I haven't seen it. Very interested in reading the review, might go out and get Edge its a good read anyway (which might be their cunning plan).

That's not what he said. He said "didn't like it" which obviously is a different thing. ...And DA is obviously not a "terrible" game. ...And the Edge reviewer obviously is a "terrible" reviewer. Lots of "obviously" here.

So you should give games higher scores on the assumption that somebody out there will like it more than you do?

Also, I've just read the Edge review, and I think part of the problem was that it focuses on the 360 version. Aside from that, it basically just cites all of the problems that I've been noticing over the last two weeks of play.

All reviews are opinions. All of them. Some aspects of a game are simply subjective and if you begin basing reviews solely on objective aspects like performance and technical graphical quality, you really aren't reviewing the underlying game, you're reviewing the programming and perhaps the budget that allowed it to have mind-blowing production values - or not.

Honestly, people look at scores too much. I prefer reviews that are informative; if they are, whether or not I agree with their overall analysis, I can weigh the pros and cons and determine if what they consider flaws are significant enough to impact my personal enjoyment of the game in question. Reviews that are presented succinctly and numerically - as is the case with many magazines, possibly due to space constraints - are simply there to give you an opinion and have merit in that capacity, but should never be taken as gospel.

Also, the term "professional reviewer" is such a joke.

No, you shouldn't give games higher or lower scores based on the assumption that somebody might like them.. the point is to take into account how good the game REALLY is..... is the story good? yeah. voice acting? check. and so on... those might all be very good but if the reviewer is simply an FPS fan and can't stand boring RPGs and thus gives it a 5/10... that's unprofessional. The reviewers opinion should be about 10-15 points worth (out of 100)... so an FPS fan might realistically give DAO 80 because he doesn't really like the game but he can see the good points in it... whereas an RPG fan might give it a 93 because he loves RPGs.

I mean, really.. do you realize how dumb it would be if the system was just based on the reviewers opinion? "ROFL, Uncharted 2? Rubbish, I hate people who are called Nathan.. 1/10!"

Also, there's a number of interesting omissions from that list of scores people keep posting. They gave Neverwinter Nights 9/10, for example. Are you going to say they got that wrong too?

Actually.. yes.

hehe, I agree.

TBH though,

Mass Effect - 7/10
Jade Empire - 7/10
KotOR - 9/10
Baldur's Gate 2 - 8/10
The Witcher - 5/10
Morrowind - 6/10
Oblivion - 8/10
Fallout 3 - 7/10
Diablo - 7/10
Diablo II - 6/10
DAO(console) - 5/10

Why would I ever go to EDGE for reviews concerning rpg's?
Seriously, these guys must dislike RPG's or wait, just JRPG's thats good? persona/final fantasy?

Yes, they definitely screwed it up.

The Edge has no credibility.. how can they give NWN1 9/10 and DA:O 5/10 when DA:O's campaign is better than NWN1s campaign in every possible aspect...

Previous Edge reviews according to this thread:

Mass Effect - 7/10
Jade Empire - 7/10
KotOR - 9/10
Baldur's Gate 2 - 8/10
The Witcher - 5/10
Morrowind - 6/10
Oblivion - 8/10
Fallout 3 - 7/10
Diablo - 7/10
Diablo II - 6/10
NWN OC - 9/10
Final fantasy XII: 9/10
Final fantasy X-2: 7/10
Blue dragon: 6/10
Dragonquest VIII: 8/10
Demon's soul: 9/10
Persona 4: 9/10

Now: - What is there to respect?  ...And why is their DA:O score "baffling"?

If you tell me Diablo is a 6

DAO was a 5, Mass Effect a 7 and Oblivion an 8 then I would say fine, but you dont have to give me some preview/review from any future rpg, thank you very much.

Your opinion from now on means absolute nothing.

Dont even bother telling me what you think abou Mass Effect 2 or FF13, I dont care.

Not enjoying a game isn't the same as thinking it's a terrible product. FFXIII is certain to be a stellar product, but I don't particularly like that style of game.

I've just read the Edge review, and I think part of the problem was that it focuses on the 360 version. Aside from that, it basically just cites all of the problems that I've been noticing over the last two weeks of play.

So what exactly are the problems they have with it? Some quotes would be helpful. I buy Edge sometimes (it's like $16 in Canada), and I think their reviews often put personal taste and their opinion of a company over the quality of the product. If there's one thing I've noticed on these forums, people's tastes vary wildly on this one, and are highly subjective. Graphics, combat system, difficulty level and game balance for examples. I happen to think it's all pretty good, some parts less than others, and this opinion will make other people splutter and foam at the mouth like zombies. Even still, I think it's a very small minority who could honestly say this game as a whole deserves a score of 5/10 (especially considering I can't stop playing it).

FWIW I also thought Modern Warfare (the first one) was pretty awesome, but I only played it for 4-5 hours. I'll rent this one too, and then I'll probably go back to DAO.

Wtf?!
I mean there is some problem with the console-version but 5/10?
Edge is like the most respected magazing in the business (along Famitsu)

I don't think Edge is a good mag, honestly. I'm not surprised. Unless it's Halo-riffic. They want nothing to do with it.

mm, I never said though that Edge or Famitsu is reliable but they are the biggest name out there.Clearly Bioware/EA must have done something...

How are they the biggest name out there if none of us have even heard of them?

No. Dragon Age is extremely, extremely good if it's rated for what it is. An RPG made in the spirit of the classics. The combat is good/great if you don't use bugs or lame tricks. The story is excellent, so is the voice acting, lore, etc...

Dragon Age reviews under 85 are not credible. If a reviewer rates it under 85, they haven't rated it for what it is but what they wanted it to be...

No no no no no.

As soon as you say 'for what it is', you're immediately compromising your opinion because you're now picking and choosing points at which you're going to review the game instead of taking it as a whole. Of course the game will score 10 out 10 if your only criteria is to have it include Dwarves, but that doesn’t make a balanced review.

Combat sucks, if you think the combat is good/great you're either; A. Very bad at RTS games, B. Easily pleased, or C. not that smart.

It's basic at best, woefully balanced at worse, doesn't allow interesting tactical formations, forces you to play in a very basic way else the AI fails, and is built round a core of 'MMO lite' gameplay. I can go into excessive detail but it's been well discussed across the forums. Fortunately for the game combat is not the be all end all here, but it's an ugly wart on the overall game

Your opinion is very lopsided and your final statement is hilariously inept attempt to sound clever without actually having a point. I wanted the game to be a revolutionary milestone in WRPG the way Baldurs Gate was, and it fails miserably in that respect, but I should rate the game 85% or above for what it is? So what is it? A Bioware game now has to be 85% plus simply because it’s a Bioware game? Your opinion is not credible, you’re nobody, and you’ve said nothing to sway anybody. So we should all abandon our opinions formed from gaming expeirance and expectation based on you say so and tracing paper thin argument? Please.

Nope, combat doesn't suck. A) You do. B) Your momma does. C) Your whole family does.

See? I can do these ABC things too that make no sense! BTW; I've got a 100-0 streak in Total war, I could play evenly with the best of DoW2 and I'm no stranger to WC3 either.... and I'm not easily pleased and daah, obviously smarter than you are.

Now it's your turn to answer my equally stupid ABC.

As for the rest of your post, you can read mine again... I already stated what DA:O is and what it should be rated as.

Calling people stupid and making assumptions doesn't lend credibility to your opinion.
