In ME 1 I just used whatever companions were needed to give me three even role types, i.e. Soldier, Tech, Adept. I pretty much always had either Tali or Kaiden though because you could max out their Electronics and Encryption so you could bypass all types of locks.

In ME 2 I used Miranda for nearly all missions because: firstly - her abilities are all offensive and useful, i.e. Warp, Overload and Slam; secondly her Cerberus Officer ability increases group damage.

Other than that I used Grunt or Samara quite a lot and Mordin makes the missions with lots of "fleshies" such as Varren, those exploding bugs, Husks and Collectors much easier because of his Cryo Blast and Incinerate to stop them or break through armour if they have it and also his Neural Shock works well too.

Most of my other companions didn't see much action, just once or twice to test them out.

I would say the only squadmate I haven't used much is Legion, and that's just because he's unavailable for the vast majority of the game. Oh, and his build is awful.

ME1 rewarded players for getting married to a specific squad. ME2 rewarded players for switching up squadmates for each mission. I hope ME3 functions like ME2 in this regard.

ME1 Dream Team: Garrus; with a Spectre Sniper with Explosive Rounds. Wrex; with maxed out Immunity and Shotgun.

ME2 Dream Team: Kasumi; to Rapid Shadow Strike enemies. Miranda; has Overload and Warp. She's useful in almost any mission.

These are the main characters I use. Usually I always try to give everyone equal time. But on tougher/important missions I use the Dream Teams. It's tougher in ME2 to use everybody equally though because there are so many squadmates and some don't have many useful powers. :P

In ME1, yes all squadmates, in ME2, Miranda, easily the most useful squadmate on higher difficulty settings due to her having both Warp & Overload (have her all the time), The second is mostly Kasumi since she's just too frickin' useful with her abilities, Special mentions are Mordin, he's amazing against organics (Best combo with Miranda in the final mission) while Tali (won't count Legion since you get him too late) is amazing against mechs & Geth. In missions against mostly husks, Miranda & Jack are simply amazing together, (Unstable Warp followed by Improved Shockwave easily puts them back in their place). My squadmate choices are based on usefullness and NOT on "but he's so cool" or "he's my bro" crap.

I pick off of roleplay choices and metagaming unique dialogue. I find it boring using the same two over and over. The only static squadmate situation is the Occulus where I take Thane+Garrus with Incisors, so I can finish that very quickly lol.

This is my stance as well.  Others might be into choosing characters for roleplaying value, but I'll choose them based on combat effectiveness (or novelty, once I'm good enough at the game).

Yep.  I use all of them.  Even the ones that aren't particularly complementary to my playstyle.  I like to use every resource at my disposal.  I don't see much point in recruiting someone and then not using them.  Of course, when I pick squadmates for a particular mission, I gauge how effective they'll be on that mission, then how long it has been since I used them.  Unless they'll be hella useless on the mission at hand (like Mordin on a Geth mission), I pick the ones that I haven't used in a while.  I've done Jacob's loyalty mission with everyone now, and they all have different dialogue, especially at the end when you talk to Jacob's dad.  Legion's is especially interesting.

I did in ME1 and I didn't in ME2. The ones I use most frequently in ME2 are Zaeed, Garrus, Jacob, Miranda, Mordin and Jack. The rest I don't use, I wish I could use Legion more but he's one of the last and there isn't enough time, the only way is through modding but I'm too lazy to mod it correctly.

I think their effectivness is considered in roleplaying. It is in mine anyways. If I'm going into a tech heavy mission I'm going to highly consider my tech specialists.

Yeah, I've seen quite a few people go with Grunt because of the cool factor, except when compared to other's abilitles (especially the ones I've listed), he's crap.

in ME1 I used whomever balanced the squad out. in ME2 its always Miranada + someone. miranda having overload, warp, and +squad weapon dmg is absolutely overpowered.

For me tech hevy missions automatically means Miranda & Tali. Miranda to remove protections, then Tali to AI hack them. If my Shepard is playing Sentinal, even better since I now have 2 warps & 2 overloads at my disposal. :)
I've played some missions without hardly firing a shot because of this combo against techs.

I have always used every member of the team, everyone has their own characteristics suitable for all situations

I like to use the squadmates I like the most. I don't use them based on abilities, I prefer to stick to the people that I like rather than use someone I don't like just because of his/her abilities. However to avoid this squadmates should have had more powers like in ME1. I always stick with the same two people except for loyalty missions in which you have no choice on one of the squadmates.

In ME1 it was Garrus and Tali or Garrus and Wrex. That was it the entire game. the team is Liara and Garrus only for the part with Liara's mom. Kaidan and Ashley just rot on the Normandy. Never used once

In ME2 I use mostly everyone before I recruit Tali. Garrus is constant he's always there. But i switch off between Mordin, Grunt, Zaeed. Then I recruit Tali and It's Garrus and Tali the rest of the core game. they are my go to team. I use Thane and Samara for a couple side missions. I use legion after I recruit him for three missions then it's Garrus and Tali all the way

I never use Kasumi Jacob Jack or Miranda. Humans are boring other than Zaeed lol. Kasumi is cool i just never use her

I switch it up depending on what mission I'm on, if I know I'll be fighting Geth, or synthetics or robots of any sort I'll bring someone like Garrus or Miranda who has overload. On insanity I bring Jacob a bit because of his Pull ability which is useful etc.

When it comes to personal preference though I don't mind bringing Legion and Thane or Garrus and Zaeed along.

I tend to use Garrus, Miranda and Thane. Everyone else is only used during their loyalty missions. I might use Jack on the DR if I'm not playing an adept.

This. But it is soo hard to use Jacob. Pull is useful, but better squaddies have it as well. Barrier makes him survive longer but it doesnt add to his damage.

In ME2, on insanity I use Miranda and Garrus most of the time.
Otherwise, I use the dextro team. (I love Garrus and Tali)
I love Mordin to bits but he seems rather useless so I just leave him there doing his experiments. Same goes with Legion, I still love him though. Jacob/Zaeed/Thane/Jack/Grunt are my least favorites and are always on the Normandy, I don't take them anywhere unless it's their LM. Samara/Morinth/Kasumi I use on occasion, and I loooove Kasumi too. :3

Tend to use Miranda on most missions.
Then's it is a toss up between Garrus, Grunt & Mordin for the other spot when it is not loyalty specific.

My least used ME2 squadmates are Jack, Tali, Thane and Samara.

I don't pick my team for maximum by-the-numbers effectiveness, but I do try to maintain some semblance of competence and synergy within the team. Miranda should be the go-to squaddie for how flexible and flat out superior her build is, but I go with squaddies like Mordin and Jacob more. Even Insanity isn't especially unforgiving of these probably technically inferior squad choices.

Depends on the Shep, but I usually choose from an RP perspective, which sometimes incorporates effectiveness/usefulness.

For my "main" Shep:

ME1 - Took Kaidan absolutely everywhere and then rotated the second spot with Wrex or Liara being the most often used there.

ME2 - Hates Cereberus so never uses Miranda or Jacob unless forced to, generally dislikes the entire situation so uses Tali and Garrus (the only trusted team members, basically) and no one else as soon as possible.

Some of the most used characters on my other Sheps, however, are Samara, Kasumi, and Jack.
