I prefer to mix it up to keep it entertaining. It also feels weird to me for some reason, when I recruit someone and they sit on the normandy the whole time. Still, there are characters I use more than others usually leaves Zaeed, Jacob and Mordin(even though I love him!) fighting hte least.
Are you the same way? Or do you always pick the best for your class or mission?
I try to use everyone at least a couple of times in a playthrough becaue like you said it feels wrong to just have them on the Normandy and not use them. With that said I do tend to favor certain squadmates over others and certain missions lend themselves to certain squadmates because of their abilities.

Kasumi has the most powerful power in the game. Shadow Strike. That's why I'm taking her with me all the time.
No seriously. Shadow Strike is affective against Shields, Barriers, and Armor. It's like an Overload/Warp that also heals Kasumi.
And then you give her the Improved Flash Grenade and you're tooling around the galaxy with a beast. Kasumi's a monster if used correctly.

There were too many squadmates in the game
I loved the large team! I was sad to hear the ME3 squad'll be smaller.

On my rev solider, I use grunt (claymore) and legion (widow). Using all the super weapons.
That is pretty cool, I prefer the Mattock tho(chose the widow).

Then again I am a vanguard so that tends to alter who I perceive as being useful and/or interesting.

I'm more happy the way they're doing it in ME3, have a smaller permanent squad but have others from previous come in and out so they all get involved.

Never use Samara, Jacob, Thane, Mordin, Zaeed or Kasumi. Dont know why
Kasumi is extremely useful at distracting YMIR mechs with her shadow strike ability. She appears behind the mech, hits it, the mech slowly turns around (giving you the chance to shoot, warp, overload, whatever), he tries to hit her, misses, she dissapears, mech slowly turns back. Then repeat the procedure. It makes the YMIR fights extremely easy.
Mordin is incredibly useful against organics(he's crap against mechs & geth though), especially collectors. Incinerate does lots of damage to armor & health, and while doing so the enemy can't attack, his Neural shockwave is great aswell, paralyzing and permanently impairing your enemies accuracy, and Cryo blast is a great ability aswell. The easiest time I've had in the final mission was with Miranda & Mordin. Unstable warp with Incineration blast is incredibly effective against groups of collectors.
I don't use Samara, Jacob & Thane much either.

In ME2, in part one I prefer Garrus and Mordin. In part 2, Thane is my go-to guy, and I'll rotate as needed, but I usually end up taking Legion or Garrus with me everywhere else.
My least used characters are Jack and Samara. As an adept, pure biotic characters end up being sort of redundant for me especially since neither have warp and I like to warp bomb my little heart out. I rarely get much use out of Tali, Jacob, and Miranda as well, mostly because Miranda thinks she's the Matrix and ends up eating bullets, Tali is also delicate and I just prefer not bringing Jacob along.
