Because they decided that he should have the last name "Vega" instead of "Sanders" simple as that

I think it had to do with people assuming him being connected with Kahlee Sanders(a popular book character) and to avoid confusion they changed his last name.

Or more likely he was supposed to be of relation and they decided to go a different rout with is character. more likely imo
