The eye color and skintone doesn't necessarily mean anything regarding his ethnicity, but remember that back then his name was also 'James Sanders' (augh, such a boring name).

Oh, I've seen that one before! Now that you mention it, yeah he does look whiter there.

Technically the majority are complaining about his appearance, not his character. We know what he looks like, so it's not 'prejudging' to judge his appearance.

To me he looks bland and uninteresting. I cannot know, therefore am not saying that his personality will be bland and uninteresting. But his appearance is doing nothing to make me want to get to know him as a character.

While you can't know a person solely based on looks, a fictional character is designed to reflect their personality through their appearance. It's true that you shouldn't write a character off based on appearance, but you can't discount the effect that personality has on appearance either. Their visual design is a glimpse into who they are.

Sort of. You'd be surprised at how many: "I will never use this guy, he needs to die, I hope I have a choice to kill him, he looks a douchebag, he'll the first on my list to kill, I'll never interact with him" comments he's been getting. =|

Sort of. I don't know how much this counts outside of characters where looks are an important part of the story (Miranda and Jack). In the case of someone like...say, Liara? You could argue that she looks sweet, but then you'd have to encounter her in ME 2 and ME 3 and realize that she's not really sweet anymore. But your point is mostly fair.

I kind of think people who say that were going to kill him regardless. He's taking up a slot on the roster, some people think at the expense of many fan favorite characters. For some people he has no shot of winning them over.

I would argue Liara is still sweet. IMO LotSB existed solely to show us that the tough, ice queen bit on Illium was a facade which quickly crumbled at the end when she got all teary and turned back into a sweet little nerdy girl. Furthermore, LotSB also updated her look somewhat to mature her, which fit with her personality growth.

Let me correct myself: I think she's still sweet too. I should have said that she's changed from being a demure, withdrawn character to someone with a backbone.

I've been calling Vega "Broson McBroseph" just cause he looks like a "bro". I also think he looks A LOT like "Soap" Mactavish from the Modern Warfare games...

Still...interested to see how his character plays out in ME3

Wow, I really like the changes. The original just looks odd to me for some reason. Not sure if the skin tone change really does much for me, but the rest of them I approve. Although, we don't have any main characters with truly assertive facial hair, so I'd support a much fuller beard.

Wow, I didn't know this character, but he does look like Mctavish. (same nose at least) Even the haircut is almost the same.

He does look very similar. Especially around the mouth and brow. He could be that guy's younger brother.

I can just picture the art direction:

"Okay, here's Soap McTavish. Shooter fans LOVE this guy. Now we need to make Vega look almost exactly like this guy."
"Isn't that going to be too obvious, sir?"
"You got a point. Soften his jaw line."
"Done."
"Still not different enough. Turn up his nose."
"Okay, I think-"
"Not different enough...Try inflating his lips!"
"Sir, i think we've"
"KEEP GOING! CHANGE EVERYTHING!"
"Even the hair, sir?"
"What? no! Well, yes, can you make it a Faux-Hawk?"
"..."

I will admit, my tweaks make him look a lot more like Soap than the original, but I'd honestly rather have a badass Scotsman fighting at my side than a "Bro".

But that's just me.

Agreed, an accent would make me overlook everything else. Gogo William Wallace? Haha

New version is too pretty.  I've grown attached to the jarhead look.

The characters I disliked most in Mass Effect 2 had tattoos.
Zaeed Massani and Subject Zero.

Which gave me the opinion that if a character in Mass Effect has tattoos, that's a warning sign that I'm not going to like them.

And oh look, what does James Vega have on his neck?

First chance I get, Garrus is going to replace him on the squad.

...

Garrus has face tattoos.

Leave Vega alone for the Maker's sake. Like those above me, I like the jarhead look. Believe it or not, there's more than one way of perceiving good features. You people are forgetting that we've yet to even see him speak, to see his face move in game.

Guy still looks like a tool. I do hope he ends up having a cool personality, but it better be of Varric or Garrus proportions, or the dude is going to end up a martyr first chance I can.

Find me a single developer...nay, a single artist that doesn't borrow heavily from the general pool of creation.
