See? He looks totally fine. Personality, and some more game developement will cancel out James' deformed baby-face a lot of you seem to think he has. I think it's just his nose.

STOP. Just stop! Stop with all these redesigns! He's not a porn star!
He's a soldier or marine or whatever you call them. You don't have to be a pretty boy to be in the Alliance. As long as you can shoot a gun properly, you're in.
Just... stop.
And yet all the fanart lauding the "original" design have him either younger or skinnier or even both, and yes, even prettier.
And I sure as hell did neither, so you're in the wrong thread.
and Margaret, they DID tweak the herpderp out of Carver's face visually, if only slightly. Look harder.

As I mentioned before, this is really coolI am not a fan of beards but it looks like an improvement. I still think the main "problem" is his nose/nostrils. Not sure if it's the angle but it looks like there is a big space between nose/mouth.
That is a lot better. He doesn't look so plain. Thanks for sharing.

Don't think how we recruit him has been revealed yet, but if it happens on Earth, I'm pretty sure Shepard isn't going to have enough time to pick and choose which remaining soldier would look best while posing with him for his Facebook profile pic.
Not to mention that ugly is subjective anyway. There are going to be plenty of people outside of these forums who purchase the game that might like the way he looks, and has been stated pretty much everywhere, we know little to nothing about his personality.

Depending how you customize Hawk he can come out looking really stupid. I apparently didnt tweak my Hawk enough because Bethany, Carver, and Mum still have the default looks.Margaret_TheElf wrote...
I think that James looks fine in the original. Remember how before Dragon Age 2 came out, a lot of people thought Carver looked really Herp Derp. Then DA2 came out and we all found out that Carver is a total jerk, handsome, and totally NOT not stupid looking?

I'll accept Vega if he turns out to be a decent character. I'm hoping he won't turn out to be another xenophobic bigot.

I've been meaning to drop this quote off in this thread for a while, so here is a quote that (hopefully) will put the "Ashley hates aliens" myth to rest. This is Chris L'Etoile, former Bioware writer, who wrote Ashley, and posts around the web as Stormwaltz, on the Penny Arcade forum Mass Effect thread:I find it interesting that so many people have stereotyped her as "the racist." At a couple of points she blasts the Terra Firma party as being "bigots," and she openly admires the power of the Destiny Ascension in the Citadel approach cutscene - not quite what you'd expect from a xenophobe.
In her first conversation she spells out her thinking pretty explicitly (the bear and dog metaphor), and it's nothing more than a short paraphrase of the most memorable passage in Charles Pelligrino and George Zebrowski's novel "The Killing Star":When we put our heads together and tried to list everything we could say with certainty about other civilizations, without having actually met them, all that we knew boiled down to three simple laws of alien
behavior:
1. THEIR SURVIVAL WILL BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN OUR SURVIVAL.
If an alien species has to choose between them and us, they won't choose us. It is difficult to imagine a contrary case; species don't survive by being self-sacrificing.
2. WIMPS DON'T BECOME TOP DOGS.
No species makes it to the top by being passive. The species in charge of any given planet will be highly intelligent, alert, aggressive, and ruthless when necessary.
3. THEY WILL ASSUME THAT THE FIRST TWO LAWS APPLY TO US.
And it's hard to dispute this. At the least, you could say the krogan live by these rules. It's certainly a more suspicious and pessimistic point of view than most of us are comfortable with. But is it racism, or realism?
Anyway.I fully expected some people write her off as a bigot. What surprises me is that no one's pointed out that her position does have some sense. Evidently, I did something very wrong here.
To answer a question from... I don't know, tens of pages ago, if you romance her and have persuade, you can convince her to be a bit less extreme in her opinions.
Link to post
And there you have the man who wrote the character, telling us what she meant by the bear and dog comment, and her view on aliens. Realism, not racism.
So there!!!

For me, it took a while but I finally warmed up to Ashley and if Kaidan isn't the only s/s romance option then I'm going to back, replay the first game and save Ashley instead. I'd much rather see her on my team because I feel like my Shepard and Ash grew to have an amazing friendship...but I don't wanna' risk my poor Shepard dying a lonely space marine! D:

Up until I met Zaeed and Subject Zero, I wasn't all that bothered by their appearance.
But when I realized how antisocial they were, then I got annoyed by them.
Basically, if you're not a team player, then the team doesn't need you.
That's how I see it.
Mind you, I'm hoping James does not go this way, but if he does, well, the other two had their employment terminated. Literally.
And there's also another issue.
The last human soldier (Massani) replaced one of my favorite Soldiers (Ashley Williams).
I had a grudge for that reason alone.
If James displaces Grunt (the other favorite Soldier), then I'm not going to be too happy about his presence.
As for Garrus, this rule only applies to humans.
I don't think I've ever met an antisocial Turian.
Even the aggressive guard in Omega may be fairly abrupt, but he still deals fairly with you.

While most of these redesigns aren't to my tastes, I don't have a problem with them. A, nobody at BW is really going to say, "Hey, that looks good! Let's scrap the designs we paid for and go with those!" B, he's already pretty blatantly a straight male fantasy with that superhero body, why not fantasize a little more?
