What I truly don't understand is why everyone believes that game development is a serial process? There are multiple people working on different streams at the same time, the people working on Kinect could have been working on this way before the actual story based gameplay landed, they could even have been working on this while the other xbox and PC devs were integrating the iteration of UE that went into the PS3 version

Here's a thought: Don't like a feature? Don't use that feature.

I understand some features are not for everyone (some people will or will not use Kinect, some will or will not choose a romance, some will or will not play different classes, etc). However, I do not understand the seeming NEED for some people to belittle or ridicule the feature that they currently do not have interest in.

Does it make people feel better to nock a feature they do not care about? I personally do not like eating liver, but I do not stand in my local grocery store laughing at people who buy it telling them how stupid they are for enjoying it.

reading the dialogue. no. but it could make speed run throughs on insanity quicker, if you can fully control your squad with it. without computer hot keys there's no way i can beat levels as quickly as pc gamers. however, in the demos, it seemed more like a casual bonus feature...

I actually kind of like the KInect feature, but what is the point of having Shepard saying the things I'm saying in his voice? In the E3 demo of Kinect, it seems that I have to say what's written on the screen out loud, then Shepard will say the same things out loud. To me, this doesn't make any sense...

What does make sense, though, is that you can tell e.g. Wrex to move forward or Ashley or Jack to defend or fire at the nearest enemy - as I understand it, anyway...

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The only reason I'm not on the rant train over Kinect is the slight possibility it might add some accessibility to partially handicapped/disabled individuals.

Beyond that, I suppose MS sharing E3 and some dev costs may or may not offset the time/cost to not significantly change the resulting end product. But that is something we will never know unless some ex-employee goes on a twit rant or something.

Though in hindsight, being able to yell (Kaiden, stop shooting me in the back of the fracking head and screwing up my shot!" in ME1 might have been useful. Well, I did yell that, but actually having the game register it would have been satisfying.

It's a neat feature, but as Chris said, if you don't like it, you don't have to use it.

>Nobody liked it
>Nobody used it
>Something actually good could have been put in it's place
>We lose content

See what I mean?

First, until it is out we can't say whether people like it or use it.  I personally think it has great potential in improving the console gameplay because of the lack of hotkeys, you can still have all squad powers easily available to you without having to use the power wheel.

In terms of something else being put in place, that is not necessarily the case.  The people working on Kinect aren't the same people working on level design, story, art, etc.  Instead they are people that are working on the Kinect implementation.  They might be already done with their prior work, or may have been hired for their knowledge of Kinect.

Complete Speculation below:
With Kinect being such a late addition I think it is likely Bioware receieved some sort of deal from Microsoft.  Microsoft likely wants to market Kinect as more than just something for "casual" motion capture gaming.  It likely wants Kinect to also be a tool for more traditional games and gamers to enhance the gaming experience.  ME is a successful franchise and thus getting Kinect into that game would likely be worth paying for it in terms of marketing.  I had never thought about buying a Kinect previously, but I know when I learned about the feature I thought about if Kinect was worth picking up.  It is unlikely that I will buy it just for ME3, but having it as a feature made me think about Kinect when I didn't think about it at all before.  Likely there are people that are on the fence about buying a Kinect and this might push them over.  Further, if it is integrated well it could lead to other developers using it to enhance the experience.

If Microsoft is paying Bioware for the implementation then we as gamers are losing nothing and only potentialy gaining a nice feature for the game.

I don't see why so many are upset about the kinect feature. Don't like it? Don't use it. That's why is called "optional".
As in, NOT MANDATORY.
To get on here and rant and rave like that is really childish.

If I had a Kinect I sure would try it out. I'm not that big a fan of talking to my computer, though (I feel like Scotty in ST4 lol).

My question is: is why just use Kinect as a glorified microphone/headset and not use a standard
mircophone/headset?

I wondered that too until I found out a couple of things. First the Kinect has four different microphones so it can receive voice commands more accurately second the kinect already has voice recognition software so it decodes all of the words spoken by the player, thus, the developer doesn't have to worry about putting that voice-recognition software into the game making it almost effortless to integrate high-quality voice commands into the game.

meaning that voice commands can be easily and well implemented into into mass effect 3 where with a headset. It would be much more difficult.

So I would expect to see more games using the connect to implement voice commands into them.

www.g4tv.com/videos/53429/Mass-Effect-3-E3-Gameplay-Demo/ this is my source relevant info starts at the 4 min. 44 second mark.

Thanks for the infomation.

I laughed so haaaard when I saw this. It's truly ridiculous (to me) to say what Shepard will say when I can just click it. Also, you can just say it, and then click it. There, I just saved you 100 moolah. Furthermore, we shouldn't need kinect for it when a headset would work just the same for conversations and combat commands.

It seems as BW has finally sold it's soul.... or aren't thinking outside the box. I go with the former (what?).

1- I don't wanna play with a headset

2-I can use combat commands for my team mates without passing through the wheel, which is impossible on console without kinect.

I have a kinect that has been gathering dust since I bought it, but I'll be happy to use it during my second playthrough of me3.  It looks ok and interesting.

I don't get how it's evidence of Bioware selling its soul, or even wasting resources. It probably took them very little time to implement. If it attracts more people to the game and doesn't hamper my experience, not a problem.

I see it more as Microsoft pushing the integration of Kinect into most "core" titles in order to sell more Kinect. At least, that's what they hope.

ME3 kinect implementation simply sounds useless and I hope they are not "wasting" too much time/ressources on that.

Well, as a PC player, this is just a dead loss for me personally. But I can see why some of the XBox folks might like this.

As for resources... how many zots are we talking about? There's an SDK, and you hook that into the system.

If you are not going to use the "power wheel", then on xbox one of the limitations ( vs PC version ) is that the squad power use function is tied to the same control as the squad positioning ( left and right dpad ). Many times it is unreliable to use the dpad to execute power combos ( garrus overload, your pull, Miranda warp ) because of the controls ( on PC its an easy three button push sequence ), and you may end up sending Miranda to where the enemy is instead of her using warp. Depending on how they implement it, it could add quite a bit of control for an xbox player. I do see this as a very positive change if they can pull it off. Some people would just use the Power wheel so they probably don't care, but I will give it a try for sure.

It has to do with the thing that you guys at Bioware always bring up, which is about how resources are limited and so you can't always give everyone everything that they want.  We want better story with more choices.  If resources are going into developing the game for Kinect compatability, that means that the game has fewer resources to improve on other things.  Kinect just isn't the type of hardware that people who have played these games really own, with the exception of maybe a few thousand people at most..  It's something Microsoft is obviously trying to get you to do to increase sales of Kinect, but it just does not belong in this game.  It's going to benefit a small slice of the Xbox gamers, and it does absolutely nothing for the PS3 and PC guys.

This same reason is why a number of people don't want multiplayer as well.  We don't want you wasting time making maps and balancing out how biotics are  gonna work in multiplayer when you should be concentrating on the single player experience.  Hate to break it to you guys, but as a 3rd person shooter alone without being an RPG, this game is an extremely poor man's Gears of War.  It's the RPG parts that make this series my fave of all time and ME2 my top 3 games.

In reality, I think every resource not going into story and dialog should be going into things like area design, side quests, increasing customization, more companion chatter that isn't just misison related, and making sure our decisions carry over from all three games instead of being brushed over.  Great, we can use our hands as controllers, but I want to see that the Collector Base decision and the Rachni decision are actually acknowledged and have gameplay consequences.  We want branching paths with actually different content so that the game really feels different on multiple playthroughs using different Shepards.

Thing is, we have been getting a LOT of positive feedback from the devs on all aspects of the game lately. Sure, it got pushed back a bit later than some of us wanted but we know they're working their arses off on a high-quality product. They are still producing the game they set out to produce, nothing "major" has changed due to adding kinect support. It's just voice-recognition, not like they are doing something crazy that will take huge amounts of time/effort that could be spent elsewhere. Give the devs some credit, they want the game to be successful and fun too, it's not all about pumping the potential kinect market.

First, we are always going to hear positive feedback from the devs. In fact, we will never hear anything beyond that because anything else would be counterproductive. They want sales, which segues into my second point. Yes voice recognition is all about pimping the Kinect, and frankly is the only reason they are implementing it. We have heard nothing uniquely offered to the PC or PS3, the latter having Move. Microsoft has been desperately pushing Kinect and want to benefit from ME3's success. The whole thing is a gimmick, like the Dr. Pepper or pre-order stuff BioWare refused to ever release as paid DLC.

They are making this for the pc? I just don't see the point! I use an xbox, why whould anyone use diffrernt technology than me!

Kinect is something new, the psuh to make iuse of it has to start somewhere. Some people will use it and enjoy it. The fact that they are making it kinect freindly doesn;t mean they are removing 5 levels of goodness for the rest of the people, nor does it mean it is going to be dumbed down.

Anyone that things adding kienct = removing something else is anywhere from ill informed to illogical to down right stupid.

The way I see it, kinect is still in baby's shoes in development and simply needs new games as it's base to function better and probably even new platform to support the technology. What Bioware is doing with kinect in ME3 looks good, although it could have been done already in ME2 and there could be even more than just voice commands with kinect functionality.
