And I agree, don't like it, don't buy it, no need to rant about it. I think people forget that sometime to achieve break through, R&D and testing have to be done. Frankly I believe it's what the Kinect is, the technology behind it is relative new in the motion capture scene (not saying the Kinect is the first device using computer vision). It has some potential and if things goes well it could replace the traditional sensory/magnetic motion cap method. But for the technology to mature than thing like the Kinect have to get out there.
Frankly even though I don't use it to play game now, I hope it contribute into toward new technology to enrich gaming in the future, maybe 2 or 3 generations down the road. (In fact, I think that's what MS is shooting for with the Kinect, the fact they're supporting a free SDK for it). I mean ... common, we're been playing with mouse/keyboard/controller for almost 3 decays now, don't you want something cooler?

I'm just coming back to the forums after a break and I'd appreciate if anyone could let me know if this guy is a troll so I can judge whether or not to take his posts seriously.

I laughed so haaaard when I saw this. It's truly ridiculous (to me) to say what Shepard will say when I can just click it. Also, you can just say it, and then click it. There, I just saved you 100 moolah. Furthermore, we shouldn't need kinect for it when a headset would work just the same for conversations and combat commands.
It seems as BW has finally sold it's soul.... or aren't thinking outside the box. I go with the former (what?).
the reason its only with kinect is because if they did it with a headset they (bioware) would have to physically develope ALL of the voice recognition code in order for it to work for pc/ps3 and non kinect 360 users. bioware litterally didn't have to do much of anything other than link the chat lines/combat commands to the kinects vr software. so no they didn't sell their soul they did something that was finacially light (like very light) and at the same time allows for kinect to have some functionality in the game (which is more than can be said for the PS3 Move system).

I just want to know one thing, since all the known Kinect features only make use of the microphone, then why can't I just talk into my Xbox Live headset? I mean, Rainbow Six games used it. Madden 10 & 11 used the headset to deliver plays to you like you were the quarterback, so why can't I use the microphone that came with my Xbox instead of having to pay $200 for Kinect?
This has already been answered in the thread.
Its because the Kinect has voice recognition software built into it, which saves the Bioware team from having to develop it from the ground up for ME3.
Still, its a bloody expensive microphone.

I think the success of it is going to be determined by the response speed / ability to shorten the commands in combat. (The voice = dialogue option I'll probably never use).
If you have to say "Liara - Pull" (Insert childish giggling) - but if in the few seconds it takes for me to say and the game to register - has the battlefield shifted too much to make it something really viable as a tactical use? From the very limited vision we've had of it, it actually looks like it would have leant itself better to ME1's slower, more methodical combat. That said, still looking forward to having a try of it.

However that would be it...the talking thing....dumb. No offense of course but when you're saying what he is going to say -- only he repeats it...well, kinda defeats the purpose.

Its a gimick like how Bioshock infinte is compatable with the PS3 move some people will use it and others a controller, Quit complaining, anyway I have a kinect and I looking foward to using it in ME3

Hopefully BioWare didn't put too much effort into it so that they can spend more time polishing the gameplay (for everyone).

My question is: is why just use Kinect as a glorified microphone/headset and not use a standard
mircophone/headset?
I wondered that too until I found out a couple of things. First the Kinect has four different microphones so it can receive voice commands more accurately second the kinect already has voice recognition software so it decodes all of the words spoken by the player, thus, the developer doesn't have to worry about putting that voice-recognition software into the game making it almost effortless to integrate high-quality voice commands into the game.
meaning that voice commands can be easily and well implemented into into mass effect 3 where with a headset. It would be much more difficult.
So I would expect to see more games using the connect to implement voice commands into them.

people kept asking the question so I just went ahead and quote myself to get the information back up here<3

Though I know there are business reasons why this is happening, and Bioware's doing the best they can with the orders they've been given.

Saying the line when you could simply choose it using your controller is silly and pointless- especially when what Shepard actually says is so different to what is written. Saying that, the squad voice commands looked pretty cool and lookes a bit more practical than pausing the game to select a power. Regardless, I won't be getting it (I play on PC) and likely wouldn't have got it even if I was still playing on Xbox (my Xbox rroded so I got a PS3 instead).
This. A one can simply press buttons faster than speak commands.

In one of the E3 vids, there was a chap from EA saying/hinting that Kinect would be used for other things other than just the voice recognition. I'm hoping we can control the galaxy map, hacking mini-games etc with it too!

Here's a thought: Don't like a feature? Don't use that feature.
I understand some features are not for everyone (some people will or will not use Kinect, some will or will not choose a romance, some will or will not play different classes, etc). However, I do not understand the seeming NEED for some people to belittle or ridicule the feature that they currently do not have interest in.
Does it make people feel better to nock a feature they do not care about? I personally do not like eating liver, but I do not stand in my local grocery store laughing at people who buy it telling them how stupid they are for enjoying it.
Chris, can you really not understand people that want a greater focus on game elements and mechanics that they ACTUALLY USE?
You bring up romances. Making a character romancable REPLACES CONTENT that a person may have enjoyed more. This has been argued and ignored in other threads but it deserves repeating.
Designing Kinect features consumes time and money that could have been used to enhance game features or story content that players WOULD HAVE USED.
I know theres a few people that love to run around and say that "Oh no, it's a completely different department that works on that." Well, how about cutting that department and using those funds to build up the other departments? You know, the ones working on things that your core fanbase actually cares about?
Kinect is a gimick and it being implimented is a joke. An expensive joke that your core fans are concerned will take even a shred of potential away from the heart of ME3. If you can't understand that then I'm sorry.
