Which do you think does better, a con tank or a dex tank?

Personally I find myself favoring the dex tanks (with as many elemental resistence trinkets I can shove on them). My rogue was outperforming Alistair and Sten (both of which I turned into con tanks, just enough str for talents and armor and the rest into con) and coming close to outliving Shale.

I'm curious though which one fares better in your experience? This includes in Origins and Awakening.

I like a good balance between strength, dexterity, and constitution. An occasional point goes into cunning and willpower.

Mostly it is about being able to use the top tier weapons and armor. Usually I build strength first and dexterity second, but I almost always put one point into constitution with each lvl up.

Last time Alistair fought Loghain he took him down without using a single health potion. The first time I attempted that battle he used quite a few. But I'm probably getting better at choosing the best weapons and armor for him, too.

In Origins a DEX based tank is just way better. The HP you gain from CON is negligible. In Awakening CON is pretty useful due to Carapace mainly, but only up to a certain point. After around 50 (which is easy to get without investing heavily in it), it just isn't worth it anymore.

Avoiding damage > Bigger HP pool. Outside of Carapace and the Blood Mage specialization CON is awful in general.

I agree 100%. You will always gain more XP per level as well no matter how many points you put into CON. DEX = More defense, more defense = less hits. Less hits + Heavy Armor = Less Damage. Why have a bigger health pool and take damage, than just not take the damage in the first place.

Dagger based dex tanks can be pretty good (Duel Wield or Dagger+Shield). Your basicaly immune to almost all effects except spells and grab attacks (And as a Templar you can gain 100% spell immune easy) You dont do enough damage though generaly unless you use a dagger though and even then your damage can be pretty low as a Dagger+Shield.
The Duel Dagger Dex Warrior ends up being a great DPS and Tank due to this setup though.

Con Tanks...In origins, not worth your time. In Awakenings as a Sword and Shield you get carapace which can reduce damage to 0 from all attacks. Not alot of investment is nessary as with mixing and matching peices of sentinal, kal hirol, golem shell and other items it easy to get 60+ con from gear alone not to mention Runes as well.

Theres also Dodge tanks, that just stack the dodge property to 100%.
This works best as a two hand warrior with basicaly all your ability points invested into Str.

Theres also the Arcane Warrior Tank who focuses on buffs and debuffs.
Also in Awakening Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage/Spirit Healer, or Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage/Keeper, Are devastating and keep threat well.

Keep in mind though, a Tanks primary function is keeping threat away from the other party members. Not being able to survive anything. Somewhere along the line this got confused.  Dex and Con tanks can have some difficulty keeping threat because they dont do as much damage as more dps oriented warriors do.

In Origins the dexterity tank is far superior to a constitution tank, simply because not being hit (and being extremely accurate as a side effect) >being able to take a lot of hits. Although the point is moot really, as the Arcane Warrior tank is the best, with massive damage reducing buffs, as well as spells that gain large portions of threat very quickly; just drop any aoe dot spell and you'll gain every mobs attention just fine.

Indeed, plus 5 HP bonus per Con point is not very rewarding.

I also agree its probably easiest to Tank as Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage(Or /Spirit Healer).
Though dont underestimate Threaten+Aura of Pain on a Reaver Warrior Tank.

I also forgot theres another Mage Tank, The Shapeshifter Bear.
You can stack alot of defense and armor on the Bear form and it has auto immunity to many stuns, knockbacks, knockdowns and is the only one that has Grab immunity.

In Origins its actualy kinda better to invest into Str/Mag while in Awakening its much better to focus soly on Magic.

You will basicaly drop aoes, then charge in as a Bear.
