Hi,

I bought an installed ME1, and I got the 1.02 patch when it said to do so. However whenever I try to run the game after I hit "start" nothing happens except the menu disappearing.

System Info:

Processor: Intel® Core™ i5 CPU M-460 @ 2.53 GHz

Clock Speed: 2524 MHz

Display Adapter: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 56
VRAM: 1 GB
OS: Window 7 Home Premium
DirectX 10.0

Is this workable?

No way to tell until you get the video graphics named, and the drivers, and the audio, etc.

Take a look at "How to Report" for the hardware rundown EXACTLY AS YOU HAVE ALREADY BEEN ASKED..

The isn't any "56" video card.

Darn, I knew I forgot some stuff. Sorry:

It's an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650

Physical Memory: 7.67 GB
Driver Version: 6.0.1.6050
Sound Adapter: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)

I think that's everything I missed on the list.

Windows 7 is either 32 bit or 64 bit.  It makes quite a difference.

The Radeon driver number this year is an "11.n", with a ".5" for May, 2011, while last year their drivers were "10.n" with the ".n" for whatever month they were current in. When the Mobility HD 5650 was new, the drivers would have been "9.n" numbered.

If you had W7/64, here's where you would get the "11.6" driver:

http://support.amd.c...ob_win7-64.aspx

That number you suggested is way off ~~ when I look up my display prioperties in Windows, it tells me my driver number right there in the "settings" tab.

If, as you suggested in a piggy-back comment to an older thread, you are having game problems, there is information about the behavior of the software that is pertinent.

1) update the sound drivers if you haven't already, stock realtek from win7 stink.
2) Are you running in Admin mode plus compatibility xp SP2 or sp3? The admin mode is often most critical but the compatibility mode can also effect running.
3) being a laptop, nothing is guaranteed with it, but by all probability yes it should run if you can get your ducks in a row.
4) did it install directx9.0c when you installed or did you skip that, because 10 isn't backwards compatible enough to run the game correctly. Mind you if you have 10 and 9.0c installed it will only show 10.

I guess I'm stuck then, this is 32-bit not 64-bit. The game won't work for me will it?

Mass Effect doesn't care whether Windows7 is 32 bit or 64 bit, although the 64 bit version of Windows XP probably would not work well (AND the default audio drivers in Windows 7 for the sound chip you have is worthless).

You'll have to reset the page for 32 but to get the proper 11.6 driver for the 32 bit Windows 7.

I can't say if there are game problems yet, since I still can't get the game to start up in the first place.

And everytime I try to download the AMD driver update is keeps saying that it's incompatible for software/hardware reasons.

You really need to be sure that you have it absolutely clear in your own mind exactly what the word "download" means, versus the word "install". And there are numerous internet sites that cover the full range of the special vocabulary that goes with computers, plus the Internet.

You'll probably need a tutorial from somewhere else on the 'net (besides right here in the Social Forums) that gives you a step by step tutorial to working with drivers. If you actually have the video card mentioned, there is one remote possibility that AMD's driver site should tell you. Some laptop manufacturers choose to do nonstandard things with their cards before installing them in the PCs, and normal drivers no longer will work for such machines. That is very, VERY bad, because then the updates to drivers never happen.

That is something else you have to look up, hopefully c/o a web site that your PC's manufacturer operates, where you may ask where to get better drivers than whatever you have, whose numbers were totally nonstandard when you offered them to us.

Once you actually can deal with the drivers the way that they are designed, and can communicate what is happening when you fail, tell us the rest, such as what driver didn't work, where it came from, etc.  Meanwhile, the Omega Drivers are always a potential fix in cases such as yours.

Hate to repeat, but did you try any of these??  Especially #2.

Win7 is notorious for not allowing you to write essential items on startup of programs unless you are running as admin, which is totally seperate to being admin on login.  There are numerous threads on this causing issues, so if you haven't done this, then do so and see if it makes a difference.

Also does the game version in the config utilty say 1.02, meaning the patch was applied correctly?
Double also, what version is the game, ie Steam DL, Origin DL, EA Value games disk, or other??  IE, how did you get the game and install it?  There are seperate issues that can be fixed or caused by each one.
