I just finished recruiting all characters and after recruiting Jack, I'm back on Normandy in the Conference with Miranda and Jack and when the video clip ends - Shepard in is the conference room and the door and the controls on the table are in orange boxes, and I can't get out of the room or make anything happen! What's going on here?
Trapped!

^this is the only answer. That rarely happens, but the game can glitch in a lot of different places.

I have reloarded, gone back, replayed three times, but after last level achieved, it loads a new segment and then after a brief video, Shepard is trapped - now what?

post to appropriate tech forum depending on which system you are playing on, ie xbox, pc or ps3.
You may try a save further back, if you are on pc then reinstall after saving your saves and see if it fixes. Try a new game and see if it is a corrupted save or a glitch in the game. Much will depend on which platform you are playing.

Copy the files somewhere else, an USB stick preferably and don't forget your profiles!

Libraries\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save - this is where your ME2 saves and ME1 imports are kept

I suggest backing up the whole Mass Effect 2 folder. You can copy it back after reinstalling. That way you get your profile as well as pointed out earlier in the thread.
This of course only helps if your save is not corrupted. If it is, you will need to get rid of that save and use an earlier save or even start over. You MIGHT be able to fix it some other way, but that probably gets a bit messy.
By the way, the actual path name is:
C:\\Users\\YourUserName\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2
But when you find it in the file explorer, it's called "My Documents". You can also find it under "Libaries\\Documents". Is it just me, or could this be a bit more consistent?

Thanks for this - it really helped! I removed the old saves by deleting them from Bioware\\Mass Effect 2\\Save list, then replayed to the Normandy conference room, still orange boxes - BUT - then I noticed that I was getting this time a 3 second flash of a blue box, especially if I hit Escape and then the return button - so with fast reaction I was able to trigger the connection and get out of the room and talk with Cerberus. So now onward! Thanks to all who wrote!

Hard to use items is usually a sign of low FPS. You may want to change your graphics options to get a better frame speed and see if it helps the issue. IF you machine is well over specs you may have another issue cropping up with drivers or hardware.

Thanks - I think what happened was that when the video played, it started with a scene of a closed door and I hit the save button, thinking I was on another scenario - that save was what may have glitched the program. The lesson may be don't hit save in a video - it may glitch the story line!
