Hm, maybe when the pointer hovers over an item in the inventory it opens a text window with the codex entry rather than making the player take a journey into the codex and back again. Although, this might only work with higher resolutions.

...and PCs.

I'll note that Item Descriptions are just something light in game and less interesting. In fact I rarely bothered to read the item descriptions. I read the Codex Entries I got from the items instead. This still exists in DA2 for many items. I wager their data found most did not bother to read the item descriptions. My main issue with DA2 is looting armor and things that Hawke can't use and neither can the companions. Sure that means more items to vendor but it's wasted bag space. Why not just let me stack more junk instead? That shouldn't exist in DA3. Mage gear for mages. Plate for Warriors, Leather for Rogues. I don't need rogue boots on my caster. Also an addon to make the companions wear said armor is not a solution...

You know, you make a good point. I don't want useless junk in my inventory, but I also personally can not be bothered to read the descriptions of every inventory item, every time. My bad. :?

Codex entries may be good enough, but it would be nice to link them together somewhat intuitively.

Junk shouldn't weigh anything in your inventory, IMHO.

Bring back descriptions for all items

No more non-descript items - like Ornate Ring1, Ornate Ring2, Ornate Ring5.

Even a simple dagger - can have a basic description of the item "double-edged fighting knife with a central spine and edges sharpened their full length" or " the history of the weapon - how daggers came to be - how they were used"

And stop with the worn pants, scarfs, and junk - if I wanted to go dumpster diving I would of had Sandal do it.

Awww, poor Sandal. Mayhap that's why he's always scratching his bum?

I support the OP. I missed the item description in DA2.

I honestly hate the junk tab and the items without descriptions. I much prefer Miscellaneous over Junk. There weren't even flavor descriptions on all of the junk. Also, it was terrible sorting through all of the amulets, belts, robes, etc.

I think the worst moment with loot was the Tome of the Slumbering Elders. Marethari said that "it has a rare magic, beyond price." Naturally, when you go to retrieve said powerful tome, it's sitting in that worthless little junk tab.

So yes, please, to item descriptions and also to making items feel a little more not worthless.

Yes.

The inventory in DA2 was of a great design - but the lack of love to the item descriptions and icons kind of cancelled out how much better it was.

Merge the item descriptions of DAO with the inventory of DA2 - ad a little more info on the screen, without needing to hover over the item- and you've got an awesome inventory setup.

Either that or he has something in common with the goose that layed the golden eggs.

The descriptions were in the codex and not on the inventory/item screen. That actually seems to work out to me since information is with information.

That's fine for lore-heavy entries, but all items should have a short description in the inventory. Most items felt war too bare and uninteresting. Rings/belts/amulets were especially guilty of this.

Well that is a product of the trash looting in DA2 where there were way too many generic magic items. It was right back to Ring of Protection +2 in BG2 where there is no "story" behind it. Those generic things didn't have anything to say about them.

Item descriptions are never a bad thing.

The font in DA2 stinks like butt, though, so I'm not sure they would be as pleasant to read as in Origins. But having them could still never be bad.

A sentence on how simple the design of a ring is would be preferable to nothing at all. The amount of generic loot should also be toned down, but that's a different discussion.

Yeah, item descriptions are important. I would prefer they be better than Awakening's ones though. On one hand I appreciate their existence and I appreciate the humorous brevity of a lot of them ("This cap has fuzzy flaps to keep the ears warm. It is also an immensely powerful magical artifact."), but, on the other hand, epically powerful items like those should have a history, I should think.

And I prefer that history be in the item description itself, not the codex, because when I'm curious about a powerful item I'm looking at I just want to click it to read about it, not go dig through the codex for it.

Maybe Origins did this as well but I noticed it more in Awakening... maybe because everything you get is so powerful.

According to David Gaider, that would be an "inefficient" use of resources. But considering all the recycling in DA2, I have to wonder where those resources went.

Item descriptions were really fun to read, IMHO. Especially ones for items like Aodh and Thorn of the Dead Gods, but it was nice to get some sort of description for that plain old greatsword, too.

But what really got on my nerves in DA2 was the lack of names. With a bunch of different items with the same name, it just feels too generic. Not to mention, it's harder to find the item I'm looking for (say, if I want to equip a party member I just switched in).

Yes, it is such an inefficient use of resources to actually polish your games.

Bloody hell.

Agreed. And please cut down on the belt's, rings, chains and junk loot. Don't go all ME2 on us, just cut down a bit :)

Which platform are you on? The 360 font is actually pretty good. Much more readable than some of the snapshots I've seen from PCs.

If they ever include the following in a game I play, I will probably giggle myself to death:

Pluswhon Ring: Grants wearer +1.

And have it confer no discernible benefits at all.

To answer the OP, descriptions make the game better. They aid and abet immersion which is always a good thing. Lack of item descriptions make a game less compelling.

I agree.

I love DA2, but sorely missed the item descriptions. Picking up new items is simply not as enjoyable anymore. The itemization itself isn't so bad, there's a very nice slew of uniques and special items, and it seems to me there's many more unique appearances (at least for swords), but without descriptions and backstory to these items it's just not as fun.

To me this is simply evidence of DA2's rushed development, and I hope they go back to item description in DA3. Bring back the walls of text from Baldur's Gate please, those were awesome. :)
