According to David Gaider, that would be an "inefficient" use of resources. But considering all the recycling in DA2, I have to wonder where those resources went.

Yes, it is such an inefficient use of resources to actually polish your games.

Bloody hell.

Surely you're not going to take his quote at face value and use it to inform your perception of BioWare, since I'm 95% sure he just made that up.

I agree with the OP entirely. I also want to see a return of the codex in a non superficial way

The codex is superficial in DA2? How?

Item descriptions are never a bad thing.

The font in DA2 stinks like butt, though, so I'm not sure they would be as pleasant to read as in Origins. But having them could still never be bad.

Which platform are you on? The 360 font is actually pretty good. Much more readable than some of the snapshots I've seen from PCs.

I shouldn't blame the font. It's the more style.

On a high-resolution display, the solid white-on-black of the subtitle text is pretty stinky to look at (it's like completely unstyled; looking at it, I almost want to call it a bug, it's so fugly), probably the wheel options too but I don't really pay as close attention to the text there (I guess it could be worse; they could have the selection bug from ME2 where sometimes clicking a choice in the dialogue wheel causes part of the subtitle text to be selected, causing it to partially be aliased white/yellow on black). And then in the tooltips (for items and talents), there's no styling whatsoever. It's the same font, at the same size, usually in the same solid color. What on earth use is that? How am I supposed to filter the most pertinent information out of that fecal wall?

So my comment is really that if they had item descriptions it would be so horrible as to be nearly impossible to look at. Not actually because of the font but because they apparently didn't have time to use styled text.

THIS RING IS STINKY... ODD.
RESTRICTION: BETHANY

Yeah, that's really something I want to have to parse for every single item.

Yes.

The inventory in DA2 was of a great design - but the lack of love to the item descriptions and icons kind of cancelled out how much better it was.

Merge the item descriptions of DAO with the inventory of DA2 - ad a little more info on the screen, without needing to hover over the item- and you've got an awesome inventory setup.

The descriptions were in the codex and not on the inventory/item screen. That actually seems to work out to me since information is with information.

Yeah - but with information regarding to value, damage, armour, etc - I'd rather it was on the screen in the inventory section without needing to hold the mouse over the item.  Would make it a hell of a lot easier to compare items. Not to mention there is a lot of wasted space around the inventory.

The information in the codex is fine, but it still needs to be out of it with a closer assocation to the items, flicking back and fourth (and the codex wasn't exactly the fastest thing to navigate) wasn't the most elegant way to present it.

The Codex is "lore" type stuff. History and what not. The actual "what the heck this thing does" is still on the inventory page. I agree you always want the functional data there for comparison but the block of text can be in the Codex or if it is on the inventory page just make sure it is above and not below the wall of text.

I agree with the OP 100%. It took away much of the "personality" of the world. The inventory system was by far the biggest thing I disliked about DA2.

I agree with Eurhetemec about how excessive and dull the lack of random loot would be. But I vehemently oppose having only "legendary" items getting flavor. Even the random dagger had a little blurb about it.
And I feel that it expands the world ever-so subtly enough to be worth the 10-15 min of typing and coding that it would take to add it into the game. .

Sure, but like one line about how this style of dagger is Orlesian and they were popular in X year or Y war or whatever, not line after line of stuff about this particular dagger. Jmho, of course.

Of course! Anything more than that could get excessive.... although that could be a self refrencing joke in regards to an ability the item has.

It's less codex-y? I don't know =P

honestly I had no problem with the codex in DA2. If anything they improved it to make it so that once you find the entry, you can immediately read it if you so desire.

Also, I agree with the OP, despite not having read the OP's post. I want more item descriptions. And more armor sets that give set bonuses. DAO was nice enough to tell you what your item set bonuses would be.

I like loot.

I like item descriptions on loot.

I also like deciding what is 'junk' loot and what is not.

I suspect you don't like loot. I'd love to see someone test the "I like loot theory" by making most loot worthless stuff you have to donate to goodwill. you might like money but the vendor trash you don't.

People seem to have missed there are descriptions. I like those but I like the DA2 approach where they are in the Codex not on a functional item screen in inventory.

Well since 95% of everything you loot is junk I suepect you don't have a hard time "deciding".

I don't agree with most of what you just said.

Anyone played Fable III? theres a wonderful \\argument in one of the quests about item descriptions that i'm sure was had during the development of the game and I get the feeling it happened during DA2's as well.Basically the argument goes like this

Developer A: What are you talking about NOBODY reads item descriptions
Developer B: Some do and they add character!

My guess is developer A won in DA2's case

Old thread but still relevant. I've just played through DA2 again, and as mentioned in the OP the reused areas didn't really bother me. But the removal of item descriptions still annoyed me. Its something small, but it was one of those things that added up to give Origins so much more character than DA2.

I've loved item descriptions from the first time I played NWN2 and I'm really dissapointed that games since then seem to be ignoring them more and more. Except Origins. I especially liked that in MOTB some item descriptions got snarky, it was nice to see that even the Dev's got tired of writing hundreds of unique item histories. :P

But yeah I definitely would like a return of item descriptions, and pictures! It really bugged me that in DA2 a "pouch of gems" were considered garbage and had no unique little picture thingy. GEMS!

What's so important about item details? You can simply go to the codex and read them there instead.

I like item descriptions and would prefer not having to rummage over to the codex when I want to read about the item I have right in front of me.

Ring of Awesomeness
Restriction: Only usable by warriors and rogues
+1 Strength
+1 Cunning

This ring was once used by an awesome warrior who died a heroic death. One might say the death was awesome.

^that's the layout of a good item block, methinks =)

The thing is, there's no point for me to keep them while I could have the money for better items. So the codex entries are permanent, no need to worry then.

Item descriptions were actually one of the very few things I missed in the transition from origins to DA2.

That's not to say that I think they were super-duper unique. Virtually every game has them.

Sure, for the more important/interesting items, you get a whole codex entry, but I liked the short, punchy descriptions in the inventory screen. Especially when they were funny.

My favourite was for Ser Garlen's Sword: "Somewhere on the field there is a bewildered knight fighting with his dinner fork. Pity him."

The difference being that ITEM descriptions are for EVERYTHING. Codex descriptions were restricted to unique weapons and armor.

Personally, I like to pick up a plank and read about how utterly plank-like it is =]

You know... They could always bring those descriptions to the codex in DA3...? This would fix a lot of things.

Great idea. They should also bring back the lovely detailed user interface. I hated da2's one, it made reading letters and codex entries so unappealing.

Codex entries for special items are nice too and I hope they continue with that. But in Origins every item had at least something written about it (and some items had codex entries there too), whereas in DA2 there is only the codex entry, and only a small % of items are given codex entries. Most of them have no description at all.

I'd prefer less worthless items (I'm looking at you, moth-eaten scarf), and more cash. Or less chests, but with actual loot. Don't reward my mad lockpicking skills with worthless crap. I'd be happy to skip rifling through barrels altogether.

One thing I'd really, really love to see back would be an actual list of quest items in inventory. The Qunari Blades quest in Act 3 was tedious, because there was nowhere to see a running total.

Yep. Right-on with the return of the quest item list.
