In a well written, well voiced RPG, there are some characters that just stick out make themselves known to the player. These characters are sometimes very interesting, but sometimes they play a minor role. In any RPG available, who is your favorite RPG character? He/she can be a lead, villain, or minor character it doesn't matter as long as they are from an RPG game, and, please, only choose one.

Well, I will go first. In all the characters I've met, I have to say that Caesar from New Vegas is my favorite character. Not only is he voiced really well, but the mystery behind his true intentions intrigues me. The implied emotion when he states (if you try to actively make him mad), "I'm not asking you...," almost cuts through you as you leave to do his bidding. I've seen several notable RPG characters in my gaming, but Caesar seems to be the most realistic thanks to his awesome voice actor.

Anyways, I'm also curious as to see if any RPG character pops up more than once. Since this is a BioWare forum, I think Minsc would probably be reoccurring character Image IPB.

Jaheira. A strong, level-headed and independent woman and the only BioWare love interest that doesn't need her hand held and any psychological traumas dealt with.

Caesar was certainly an intriguing character.

Reflecting back on every RPG I've played (excluding pen-and-paper of course), I would have to say the character of Glarthir from the "Paranoia" quest in Oblivion is my favorite.

What a fantastically written character! I had never imagined that a fictional game character could actually infect me with his paranoia, but he did. I was following those Surilie Bros around for hours, convinced they were up to something.

What a great quest, one of my favs, along with "Whodunit?"

Kreia (Darth Traya) from kotor 2, a powerful and intelligent character who has studied both sides of the binary conflict that fuels the force and through the experience of both self righteous arrogance and certainty as well as unremitting hatred, despair, humiliation and suffering has found that neither side holds answers to the questions she wants answered. In courage she casts aside affiliations and morals to pursue her own course with ruthless intesity and guides the player character to new avenues of realisation free of slavish devotion to the recieved wisdom of a conflict that has not been halted in millenia.

Compared to the cartoonish sketch drawings of other rpg's crude, cliche, desperate and pathetic female characters she is a breath of fresh air in a miasma of juvenile lowest common denominator pandering.

I wouldn't particularly call him my favourite but Dak'kon is one that stands out for me. Doing the Unbroken Circle of Zerthimon quests gave me happy feelings all over and the lore you find out about his and TNO's past through his conversations are probably my favourite part of Planescape

Really? I found her extremely annoying and creepy at the same time. She was already hitting on my character literally ours after her she learned that husband died. I am able to understand that game limitations require some flattening of the timeline, but this simply rubbed me in a very wrong way. I was never able to force myself to pursue a
relationship with her, despite completing BG2 some 4 times overall.

As to the topic, my favourite character so far is Radovid the Stern from the Witcher series. A boy whose father was murdered and who was meant to be a puppet, suddenly turned out to be a great ruler and outmanoeuvred all those who wanted to control him. Now he seems to be the only hope the North has to beat the oncoming Nilfgaardian invasion. All his flaws make him only more believable.

Honourable mention to Viconia.

Fall-From-Grace

She is a shapely woman with blonde hair and a euphonious voice. In other words, the stereotypical hottie. Fall-From-Grace is also a succubus. Those superficial characteristics are misleading, however. As a member of Sigil's Society of Sensation, Fall-From-Grace fulfilled herself by indulging in new intellectual pursuits. She shunned her heritage by deciding to live chastely. Her Brothel of Slaking Intellectual Lusts remains a memorable subversion of the typical RPG cathouse. Her decision to join the party was motivated by personal philosophy and curiosity over anything else.

Fall-From-Grace valued knowledge and mental acuity. Indeed, it was through wits, not seduction, that she won freedom from her Baatezu master. Fall-From-Grace was shown to be insightful, compassionate, accepting of others' differences, genteel in speech, and courageous when it truly mattered. Unlike most feminine healing types, she never came across as meek. The Nameless One could only push her so far before she left him in the lurch.

It is amazing Fall-From-Grace and Annah-of-the-Shadows were inspired by a combination of "Archie" comics' Veronica and Betty, and a desire to subvert RPG clichés. They both rose so far above that inspiration nary a hint of it can be seen in the end result. Fall-From-Grace not only contributed to making "Planescape: Torment" one of the most memorable games I ever played, but also began my admiration of Chris Avellone's work. She will always have a special place in my nerdy heart.

The Brothel was definitely one of the highlights of the game. Not only was it unexpected but I found that the debates with the "prostitutes" were intriguing and surprisingly well written. After my first conversation with the woman the modron cubes are watching I was left thinking " this is the kind of stuff that should be expected in all the top games"

Damnit.

ok huh...
Would people consider BioShock an RPG? i mean it has some RPG elements...
cause if that's the case, i would say Andrew Ryan.

i mean, his Awe-inspiring efforts to create a Perfect utopy makes him engaging enough, but the fact that the hole reveliton in Rapture went down, just makes him interesting because it makes you wanna how his intetions, and throughout the game, it gives a few clues that makes your mind go "Did he planned this?".
i didn't found all the audio tapes, so i need to look more.
that, and he has one of the most powerful, shocking and direct sysmbolical mottos that i have ever heard:
"A Man, Chooses. A Slave, Obeys"

there is so much to say about this phrase, because it guides one the most thematical and important themes of the game: Choice(which also leads to one of my favorite phrases, because there is a lot behind it despite being so simple: "Would You Kindly...")

but if you don't consider this an RPG...
then i really don't know, haven't put much thought into it, there a lot of characters that i really like in this last Few years, but i don't wanna just throw this title around like nothing, nor do i want to be utterly predictable and say characters such as Morrigan, and i haven't played Old CRPGs(such as Torment) in A WHILE, so i can't really think of anybody as of now.

i don't know... i guess i could go with Mr. House, he was interesting...
although i didn't play Fallout New Vegas Enough.
for now i'll just say, there are a lot of characters i like, i haven't decide which one is my favorite.

Darn, this is tough.

Lightning - FFXIII

Revan - KoTOR (Even silently he's the most well written character I've seen)

Shepard - Wrex? (Need I say more?)

The more I read about PS:T, the more I'm tempted to try it.....

I don't play many non-Bio RPG's... so my favorites would have to be:

- Sovereign and Saren, from ME1 (a great dual-villain dynamic, that introduced the Reapers and how they work).

- Loghain from DA:O  (hateable, and despicable, and yet... redeemable?  Nice twist).

- Morrigan and Alistair from DA:O  (great writing and voice acting.  I missed their counter-banter in DA2).

Loved Fall-From-Grace. Good pick, Seagloom.

:P

As for me, I'll probably regret this later as I've got half a dozen names swimming in my head right now, but the name that comes to the top right now is Kaelyn the Dove from Mask of the Betrayer.

My PC. My PC is always my favourite RPG character.

Except in those games where I'm denied control of my PC. Then he just becomes like any NPC - distant and unknowable.

I don't think well-written and well-developed NPCs are distant and unknowable. They're like anyone else who isn't one's self.

That you can't know another with the same level of absolute certainty that you know yourself (and I'd argue that you can't even know yourself that intimately) doesn't mean you can't know them at all.

Dak'kon. Best character ever.

Honestly, though, you could pick almost any character from PS:T and make an argument for them.

Vernon Roche. He might not be the flashiest or the "most special" character but that's what the appeal is for me.

Kaelyn the Dove from Mask of the Betrayer.

A lovely companioin if you share her views, supportive. She is also very charismatic and well-voiced, making it easy for the player to sympathize with her plight. But if you happen to play a character who doesn't share her views, you'll quickly begin to see that her seeing in black and white extends to more than one level (which is obviously the point of her character).

That's what I liked so much about her as a companion. She worked so well on both levels.

Paula and Ness in Earthbound. Also Jeff in the same game, for quite possibly being one of the first gay characters in videogame history. (read the letters he gets from Tony at the end of the game)

That's kind of a tough choice... in a way I kind of agree with Sylvius, because the RPGs I've gotten the most hours out of were the ones I could replay a bunch of different times, all exploring new ways to define the PC.

When I think about WRPGs, the characters and story in general don't seem to.. move me as much as in some other games I've played, but I'm nonetheless drawn to them more, I think because of this replayability.

As far as pre-defined characters go... Auron from FFX maybe?
