Gerald - The Witcher

Not a single RPG character on earth is as bad-ass as Gerald.

Minsc

As I said, not a single RPG character on earth is as bad-ass as Gerald. ;)

Geralt is badass, true. But apart from that, he's not much else. :/

Hmmm I think he's a pretty well fleshed-out character. Especially if you've also read the books. I also like how the Witcher games tie in with the books. It's also interesting that The Witcher actually started as a book and became a video-game series later, unlike Mass Effect.

But all that is a whole 'nother story.

I liked Viconia from BG series a lot.

Mordin from ME2 is probably my favorite character in any game I've played, however. No matter how many times I replay the game, I always go through all of his dialogue.

Non-RPG chars - Andrew Ryan from BioShock, and Alyx Vance from Half Life 2

Kreia. An amazing multi-layered character that goes against the norm of how women are almost always portrayed in video games, and much intrigue and purpose for her character in the story.

How the hell can one even start picking? LOL. I have a LONG list of characters that I really like ( Jolee, Kreia, Mike Thorton, Geralt of Rivia, Siegfried, Roche, Loghain, Bhelen, Illusive Man, Zaaed, Garrus, Tali, Albatross, Canderous ) how can I ever pick just one of them?

But so be it: Loghain, if only for the massive debates I had over him.

The reason why she is my avatar is becuase Ash is clearly my favourite. Such a well voiced and complex character, people still debate about her opinions, even if they dont agree with them, that makes her that more great.

Followed by HK-47 (Kotor) Loghain (Dragon age) Saren (Mass effect) The master (Fallout) Mr House (Fallout New Vegas) Marcus (Fallout 2) Morrigan (Dragon age) Alistair (Dragon age) Kaidan Alenko (Mass effect) Mordin (Mass effect 2)

I've just started playing Jade empire, so I'm sure somebody from that game will take a spot on my list when I'm finished.

I can only assume that the reason you have not all answered Edwin Odesseiron is that the syllable-intensity of said appellation overwhelmed you simian minds.

(Could my opinion of this community drop any lower? Evidently so.)

Just finished replaying Kotor2 with the RCM, I've got to say Kreia. Honorable mentions to the Nameless One+Transcendent One (they're parts of the same person), Geralt of Rivia and Jon Irenicus.

I don't think well-written and well-developed NPCs are distant and unknowable. They're like anyone else who isn't one's self.

Yes.  Distant and unknowable.

There's not enough time in the span of a game to get to know any character particularly well.  It takes years of interaction to get to know people well in the real world - we have perhaps a few dozen hours in a game.

If I'd picked an NPC, I would have picked him.

Nordom (PST, his dialog with Grace was hilarious at times), HK-47 (KOTOR) and Legion (ME2) are at the top. I guess I have a thing for robot characters.

But overall favourite is going to Tifa Lockheart (FF7). At the time the game came out, I found her hugely endearing for all her 'd'awwww, she really DOES love him' moments that happen in spite of Cloud having (generally) all the sensitivity of a brick.

The maiden in black from Demon's souls.I spend the game wondering who the hell she was, how powerful she was and why she joined the 'good' side.

Bastila Shan still holds a special place in my heart since KOTOR was the first RPG I've played.

Others would be Vernon Roche and Saskia from Witcher 2, Garrus, Legion, Mordin, and Tali from Mass Effect 2, Alistair, Shale, and Morrigan from DA:O

Well, not sure if Deus Ex can be counted as RPG but if so, it would be...

Dr. Jaime Reyes from Deus Ex

Image IPB

The man was smart, pretty down to erath, kindhearted, has allways been in a good mood and was probably the only NPC in Deus Ex that didn't have a single negative comment, when I threw things (flower pots, bottles, boxes) at him.:P Besides, he had such a peaceful voice...
