ME2 used to work, but after system restore won't even run

About a year or so ago was when I first got Mass Effect 2 for PC. It worked perfectly well then, I had no problems. Many months later, I had some unrelated trouble with my system and did a complete factory restore, there was no trace of anything left on my computer and I started using it again from scratch.

Just today I went out and bought a new physical copy of ME2 at Best Buy, because I lost the old copy I had when I moved. It installed just fine, but when I try to run it it just gives me a "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working" box before even loading anything. This is on the exact same computer that ran it fine the first time, with all the exact same hardware. I have updated my video drivers and downloaded the 1.02 patch, and still it gives me the same thing. Aside from said patch, I have no mods and have installed no DLC; this is just the game straight out of the box.

My stats are:
Processor: AMD Phenom™ 9750 Quad-Core Processor
Clock Speed: 2405 MHz
Physical Memory: 7.74 Gb

In the "how to report issues" thread it shows that the configuration utility displays information on the display and sound adapters, as well as the OS and DirectX; my utility shows nothing for those fields, only the first three stats above. (My video card is an ATI Radeon HD 4650, I'm on Vista Home Premium 64 bit, and I have DirectX 9 updated to current). On the "Platform" tab, it just displays the number 0 where the OS should be. Is the fact that those fields are blank in my utility an indicator of something wrong?

What can I do?

1) Please register the game on the forums. This is not an accusation, but given the spate of users with illegally downloaded copies coming to the forums asking for help, forum registration is the only way we can be sure we are dealing with a legit copy. Illegally downloaded copies include hacked and modified files which could be either corrupt, or full of malware. Once its registered, we will be happy to help. Forums Registration here;
http://social.biowar...es_register.php
2) Please post a full problem report as per this thread: http://social.biowar.../index/4795299.
You have left out; Catalyst Driver revision (available from Catayst Control Panel), Audio device and driver (available from Windows Control Panel)

With very new versions of drivers, it does occasionally not recognise the driver revision, and you have to obtain them from elsewhere

You may try a complete uninstall, run a registry cleaner to make sure you got everything related to ME2. Make sure you have deleted all the folders created in the profile area, which used to me the my documents for Windows XP, and start over.

The disk isn't some kind of Value games is it?? You may also try to see if you have a program that can check the disk integrity because EA has been having some issues with bad game disks, mostly in their value games line though.

No offense taken, it's understandable. I registered the game.

Here's the report:

-MassEffect2.exe Version: 1.02
-Processor: AMD Phenom™ 9750 Quad-Core Processor
-Clock Speed: 2397 MHz
-Ram: 7.74 GB
-Display Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series (although the field in the configuration utility is blank, however)
-VRAM: unknown (as I said the field is blank in my summary, where can I find it?)
-2D Driver version: 8.01.01.1152
Direct3D version: 7.14.10.0833
Catalyst Control Center version: 2009.0225.1546.28221
DirectX version: 10

As I said, when I open the launcher and go to run the game, my mouse turns into an hourglass for a second as if it's loading, but then I get the "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working" dialog and then it quits. I have installed no mods or DLC.

First things I would try are;
1) Reinstall DX9.0c from the DirectX folder on the ME2 disk. Vista and Win7 are capable of running DX9 and DX10 side by side without issue. DX10 is not backwards compatible enough for ME2's requierments.
2) Update your video driver from ATI's website.
http://sites.amd.com...n_vista-64.aspx
3) Ensure you are running the game as admin, and in XP compatability mode

If it still doesnt work after that, let us know and we'll poke around some more.

Silly question: How can I tell if BOTH DX 9.0c and DX10 are installed on my system? Can I just reinstall 9.0c now that I've got 10? Or is there something different I have to do to get them working side-by-side? I've had some minor graphical glitches appear that I would like to try to get rid of and see if 9 helps.

Hey Bogsnot1,

I performed all the steps you suggested. I installed DirectX9.0c straight from the game disc, updated my ATI drivers and obtained the ATI Vision Control Center from the link you gave, and attempted to run the game as an admin and in XP Service Pack 2 compatibility mode (and rebooted my computer as prompted after updating/installing all these features). No results yet, ME2 still refuses to run just as it did before.

EDIT: Having done all these steps, I'm going to uninstall and reinstall it now as people have suggested just to see if that does the trick, just in case.

EDIT: Successfully reinstalled. Didn't work.

If you click on your computer properties does it show the correct data?? Control panel then system properties... DA2 was having similar issues and it was a result of a corrupted file in the window operating system that had the hardware data for the system.

here is the DA2 forum post about unable to start, don't know if you are having this issue, but you did state some of the data is wrong in the config utility.

mcsupersport, I'm looking in the "System" box under control panel. According to the DA2 thing you posted, the issue is that the game cannot identify your processor, right? My system display shows my processor though (AMD Phenom™ 9750 Quad-Core Processor 2.4 GHz). I do suspect maybe ME2 can't recognize what my processor is, since it doesn't show up in the game's configurator, but unfortunately my problem doesn't seem to be quite the same as what people were having for DA2.

However, I did notice that I'm running Windows Vista Service Pack 1. I don't remember if I was on SP2 back when I played ME2 the first time, but could that be the issue? I didn't even think about the service pack I had until now. Maybe I should update to SP2...

By all means update windows, and re-update ME2 if you haven't. I would also do a full system Microsoft update to make sure some stupid c++ or network5bs wasn't outdated in the restore and is causing all the issues. Microsoft is notorious for releasing half finished crap that needs many updates to work right.

On the ME2 disk is an software/visualcrt folder, and under there are 2 files, vcredis1.cab and vcredist.msi
These are for visual C++ runtimes which for some reason dont get installed with the game, but seem to be required, so right click on vcredist.msi and select install. Once you have done that, you will probably need to check windows update for some service packs and patches for that package.

I had to do this quite recently myself as I rebuilt my system, and spent an hour or so pulling my hair out trying to work out why ME2 (C++ from disk) , Gibbeds save editor (C++ 2008/2010 distributable from MS website), and the ME2inifixer (.NET framework 2.5 or better) werent working.

I installed vcredist.msi from the disc, then updated Windows every way I could, including Vista Service Pack 2. There doesn't seem to be any other big updates needed, although there are about a dozen weird dll-related things (as far as I can tell) that I don't know anything about, so I'm attempting to do so now. (After downloading them all, my computer crashed and then was more or less frozen for ten minutes upon rebooting, after which it seems to be fine, so I'm trying again to install them. Thanks, Microsoft.) Those little updates aside, ME2 still won't run.

I'm about to tear my hair out too. ME2 is one of the few games from the past few years I actually like and want to play, but I can't find out how to do so. This makes me so frustrated...

EDIT: Most of these updates, all just called "Update for Vista 64-bit [series of letters and numbers that makes me think it's dll stuff]", spontaneously failed to install without any given reason. Once again, thanks Microsoft. Trying again but unless anyone has a sneaking suspicion they're related to my issue I don't see a reason to keep trying if it keeps failing.

EDIT: After numerous weedling attempts, I finally got all those weird little updates installed. They have no effect on ME2's inability to start. My crestfallen melancholy continues to mount.

Is there an error code which appears after "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working", or is it just that error?

^It's just that error. It offers the "check online for a solution" thing, but when I click that it just says that it's searching for a couple seconds, then the window closes.

EDIT: When I open "view problem details", this is what displays. I don't know if any of this information is useful but I figure why not post it:

Few more questions.
Have you moved the My Documents folder away from its default location?
When you installed, did you run the installer as admin, or just run it as normal user? If normal, do it as admin.
With the system restore, did it bring back any other programs, such as Kapersky AntiVirus?

I never moved the Documents folder anywhere else, I left it right where it started.
My factory restore brought nothing back as far as I am able to tell. If it did then it must be well hidden. But I don't suspect it did. I don't see why it would.
I'm uninstalling the game again, I need to go to bed so I can get up for work tomorrow, but I'll reinstall it in admin mode and see if that makes a difference.

Uninstalled and reinstalled in admin mode. The game still won't run.

I really have no idea what to do. I don't understand why this game just won't work.

EDIT: I'm thinking it's some kind of DirectX problem. A friend suggested I run dxdiag, but I got a message saying "could not load DXDIAGN.DLL". My friend said that was probably a serious issue. Looking around online, apparently that issue prevents others from running a number of programs.

Unfortunately, the most common solution anyone offers is to re-install DirectX, but of course I've done that several times now and it doesn't change my inability to run dxdiag. Does anyone think this might be the source of my problem? Any suggestions?

EDIT: Another friend said that my dxdiagn.dll file sounded corrupted when I told him it's only 191kb; he says it should be like 2mb. I found and downloaded a replacement copy and put it in my Windows folder (I saved a copy of the original and created a system restore point before doing so, just in case). My computer actually did crash about half an hour after doing this, but It's back up now, as I'm typing this just fine. Anyway, dxdiag actually worked after I registered the new dll, but what's more interesting, my ME2 configurator actually now shows more information:

Processor: AMD Phenom™ 9750 Quad-Core Processor
Clock Speed: 2407 MHz
Physical Memory: 7.74 GB
Display Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series (previously blank)
VRAM: 1.00GB
Driver Version: (still blank)
Sound Adapter: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) (previously blank)
Driver Version: 0.0.0.0 (previously blank, does all 0's mean it's not reading correctly?)
Operating System: (still blank)
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (Mar2009) or later (previously blank

So it shows some more info but still leaves some fields out. Any ideas what this now means? ME2 still won't start, same as ever.

You know it really sounds like your restore was corrupted. Do you have an actual operating system disk that you can reinstall from?? If you do, you MIGHT, may, or maybe want to consider a full wipe and reinstall. Otherwise you may try a fixer program/utility that could check your install to see if it can find problems. Now this may be a last resort option, but it is an option I hope you have.

And yeah, the zeros mean it isn't reading your drivers correctly.

I don't have a restore disc for my Vista OS, unfortunately. Do you have any fixer utilities in mind?

I might have an opportunity to obtain a free copy of 7, though. I'm definitely going to be investigating that as well.

uninstall your displaydrivers, reboot, reinstall drivers fresh, reboot.
Just a suggestion, but I could not see in the above thread that you've done this, and I think you really should.

^Would doing that work better than just attempting to re-install my drivers while they're already there? That's what I've been doing.
