I've been hooked on this game ever since I first loaded up the character generator, enjoying the setting, the quests, the characters, even the dialogue...

... half an hour ago when that Grey Warden ritual was forced down my throat in an epitome of bad writing and game design if ever there was one. I'm still reeling. Best I rant a bit.

I already had a bad feeling when I got to Rigley's (?) hidden cache and was forced to choose right there and then whether I open it or leave it closed, unable to check back with my log to see what's the matter with that box, apparently closing that quest if I open the box as I for somr reason (I should be able to lie to the widow instead, getting the similar results - why should she care about a miniscule detail faced with her husband's death?)

Now the ritual. I didn't want to be a Warden. I certainly wouldn't have stood by and let Duncan kill in cold blood a guy who saved my neck in the woods a few times. They should have let my character rage and fret in dialogue, if I chose to, and finally held me down and forcibly poured the blood down my throat. And certainly not have her idly wait her turn and gulp it down as the cutscene shows. Afterwards, I'm given a choice of three civil, understanding dialogue choices. I want to kill the bastards! This is both ludicrous and revulsive.

Whatever they had built up so far concerning character development has just gone down the drain for me. I quit the game right away and am considering not ever restarting it unitl there are ssome good custom campaigns. I have little time as it is and there are other games.

So, kind forumites, tell me: do you think I should persevere? Will I get a chance for vindication later on? Will I be able to make the meaningful choices for my character or will I have to watch the designers take it out of my hands time and again?

It was just our first lesson as a Grey Warden. And to be fair, he pulled out his weapon first. :P

well as you will see being a warden is kind of pivotal to the entire story. If you were not one you would be playing a different game than dragon age. That being said yes there are choices that matter and they will impact the the kind of character you play.

So you're mad about the RPG doing what EVERY RPG does in the beginning, which is set up the plot... and you think it's more realistic that Duncan would make special concession to force you to do the ritual but would flat out kill Jory for refusing it?

No, you're probably too stupid to shut your mouth in a rainstorm to prevent from drowning... you'll hate this game.

He didn't say that he didn't want to be Warden. He said that he wanted Duncan to force the blood down his throat and for the PC to insult him afterwards.

Duncan killed Jory because Jory pulled out his weapon and attacked Duncan

Oh sure, you can totally refuse Duncan!

Here's the character options.

1. Exit game.

2. Uninstall Dragon Age.

There, Duncan just killled you so no more dragon age story for you! Defy them, defy them I say!

Jory unsheathed his sword, stood terrified, and pressed his back to a pillar, Duncan charged him. And why would he treat your refusal any nicer?

There are three options at that point:

1 - Drink the blood and die (see Daveth)

2 - Don't drink the blood and die (see Jory)

3 - Drink the blood and survive. (see main character)

Now, only one of those three continues the storyline that the back of my game's case mentions. So, think about it for a moment.

Yeah, Given what happened when Jory refused, you can assume Duncan shanked you, exit the game, and consider the story of that character over.

Duncan didn't charge, Jory attacked first. A vid on youtube can confirm this, he attacked first. I can't be arsed to find that vid, though, so happy searching.

Beside the whole point of the game was to be a Grey Warden and save Felderen...... i mean if ye refuse to be a Grey warden it should say Game Over!!! because there is no point in playing the game.

If you played Mass Effect you had no choice in being a specter...so I fail to see why you would be upset about the grey warden thing.

Or, if you play any fantasy epic, you're forced to be the hero or do nothing. OH MY GOD SO MUCH RAILROADING I WANTED TO BE A SURVIVAL FARMER WAHH!

That vid was doctored by Duncan supporters. It's all a cover-up.

Just a thought, I think they should have given you the option to refuse and get killed by duncan. After all if you can die from losing a fight, why not die from making a bad decision in dialogue? it is more realistic and makes more sens, and hell might even be more immersive.

Yes, so why would Duncan treat you any better in your refusal? You both proved yourself to be accepted into the order.

Heh don't think we're arguing so much as he wouldn't do the same thing to you if you're refuse as to the grounds that you believe that Duncan swung first!

This court finds in favor of the bearded one, dismissed!
