So I guess it is about entitlement.

It's actually about equality. There are too few real female action heroes, too few Ripleys and too many Babydolls. Women in action/sci-fi/adventure media are usually either hypersexualized for the male audience (Lara Croft anyone?) or subservient to the male lead (most of the times both). So seeing one of the great female action heroes of modern sci-fi get no recognition at all from her authors obviously gets people upset. They are playing as this great kickass female yet all they see in the promo material is Sheploo. She is never even acknowledged, and no it's not enough that the option is in-game. If the only person we see in promos is male shepard, it gives weight to him that shouldn't be there. It gives people an opportunity to go around saying that femshep should be cut, or that the canon shep is male, or any other number of things that are, well, crap.
One fifth of the players play femShep, and I think one trailer out of all the storm of promotional content that they no doubt have planned is a good way to finally show to that one-fifth of the players that their version of Shepard is not invisible.
Also, google sexism in the media. Makes for good reading.

Oh I love it when people throw that word out.
Of course it wouldn't be such a big deal if the male hero was left in the background, maybe because Male heroes are everywhere.  How terrible it is of paying customers to ask for some (not completely replacing Sheploo) representation. But it's perfectly fine for the majority that gets catered to first to call those that ask, "entitled". :pinched:

Kind of like when people throw out the words "racist" or "sexist" or whatever?
Please, it sounds ike you have an ax to grind.  We ALL are paying customers, and we all have things we would like to see.
Based on what you have written, it sounds like that you believe femshep (a fictional character) is entitled to equal press because a group of people feel they have been repressed.  I mean, it has to be that, because I come to these boards and constantly see plenty of evidence that femshep exists.  I see quite a bit of fan art, fan videos and such. What difference does it make if it shows up in a gaming magazine or an online news site?

I still think Bioware's decisions are based on hard facts.  What sells more units and what doesn't.  I am almost positive that if they found out they could sell 4 million units with a female Shepard on the cover, they would do it in a heartbeat.

Personally, I couldn't care less who is put on the cover, or who gets a farking trailer, but some folks do.  Like I said earlier, it all sounds a bit petty to me.  "Look at me, I am angry about this injustice".

Out of my four Sheps 2 are men, 1 Sheploo and one FemShep. Honestly I like both voice actors, Meer has good delivery imo when it comes to sarcastic lines and Hale does a good job with emotion.

I am glad that FemShep gets some attention though, always struck me as odd that she always an afterthought.

I used to enjoy hale over meer... But now I think meer is superior. At least in me2. I still havnt managed to finish a me2 femshep run.

Hale is more emotional overall, but that can be bad especially if her tone does not fit the scene, and I think she tries a little to hard to sound like a military woman, she does great as a renegade though.

I don't care who is on the cover, he-shep or she-shep.

I play both, I use the default face for he-shep and a custom for she-shep.

I can understand why a smaller percentage of people play she-shep. The choices of hair are few and poorly rendered, but that is an engine issue. Funny, that the only species with hair in ME are humans, but they all choose to wear their hair short and neat. I hope that is fixed. A universe where hair style choices can fit on a one page pamphlet is sad.

Jennifer Hale was OK, I agree, I think Meer did a great job with He-shep. For she-shep I would have prefered Alison Matthews.

It's great that BW are giving female Shepard more recognition! I really like both Meer and Hale's voiceacting, imo they both contribute to Shepard's charisma immensely :)

I'm afraid you're reading a little too far into this. Marketing an RPG is fairly problematic because in one minute trailers you have to indicate some sort of narrativity by providing icons and logos people will recognize when shopping for games.

Bioware chose to make the iconic character male because at the moment the majority of players are male and tend to play primarily as a male (though is changing). Bioware had to make a choice and based that decision on marketing not sexism.

While I fully support the inclusion of this option, I'm not particularly enamoured with the idea of Mass Effect becoming simply the base for a feminist movement, I like to think it transcends that kind of socio-political agenda.

Mass Effect becoming simply the base for a feminist movement? what are you talking about?!!

You know a lot of femsheps fans are guys as well right or that girl gamers arnt all feminist or part of a major socio-political campaign. Honestly that post is on the most poorly thought out and naive I read in a while.

Just because Bioware is broadening its marketing range and appealing to the fans who like a strong female lead has nothing to do with gender politics. Its Bioware identifying that a lot of people like femshep and they want to attract new gamers who also will be interested in a strong female lead. May as well cash in on her popularity. Oh and dont worry, a trailer and a few media articles wont take away from sheploo. His face will still be on virtually everything.

But honestly why is femshep enamoured to the base of the feminist movement? What a load on nonsense.

I was only saying that Sheploo is pronounced because of marketing rather than anti-feminism. And I agree it's not, I was just trying to explain that Bioware already makes their games in such a way that they aren't affected by gender bias (rather by what sells) and we shouldn't get too worked up about Femshep being a little disregarded at present (that will change as more and more women play video games).

Christ I really didn't expect that to offend anyone to be honest, I was replying to the views of an individual, not with the intention of generalising at all.  Sorry if I didn't communicate it well enough.

No worries. Sorry if I blew it up a bit as well.

I read several comments by people who genuinely believe that femshep is part of some big feminist agenda and associate her and it as one and the same. As a result I have little patience for people who are that narrow minded.

Anyway moving on, you are right. Bioware set up Mass Effect without any gender bias in mind. The result of that was to have a female protagonist who was on an equal footing. Thing is thats really rare in a video game so people have grown quite attached to femshep and want to see her promoted a bit more. As said shes equal, but doesnt have equality in marketing ect where Bioware created a default brand image. Its nice to final see that there set in stone campaign is flexible and they are promoting a strong female lead. Sheploo is still the face of Mass Effect, but its good to show there is more then one way to play the game and attract a different base of gamers.

It's not and it won't. What I said was just a hypothetical developed in light of a statement of an individual I was replying to. Sorry I underestimated the sensitivity of the topic.

I went with a sheploo in ME1 because the avatar customizability was terrible (particularly since i had just finished DA:O). Plus, I have never felt the desire to roleplay a female character, I figured I could never do justice to the gender... is that sexist?

Edit: Also, why does femshep on the ME3 promo art look like a 12 year old girl?
