You would have to play the game for thousands of hours every year for it to be comparable to the value of many other games.

Not to mention times when you just have no desire to play.. You were still paying for it. There were times when I'd got weeks without playing yet I don't hesitate to buy another card. At some point your playing it because your obligated to rather than cause you want to.

Huh? Average modern game takes like what..7-17 hours to beat these days, ay?With RPGs and other longer-than-usual stuff offering some 30-55 hours. Same average game costs you 20 bucks. (Being very..cautious here, ofc you pay what, 60 bucks from AAA and if it's console games you buy, mortgage of your house-numbers.) Meanwhile, you barely scratch a surface of an MMO within those 7-50 hrs and pay some 12 dollars/month for it. Ie, three months of an MMO would buy you DA II. It really doesn't feel too much of a nut to crack.

Here is a typical cost per hour of entertainment value for all the games I have purchased and completed in the past few years:
- Oblivion: $30 / 1500 hours (still haven't even completed this game) = $0.02 per hour
- Skyrim: $60 / 2000+ hours (estimate) = $0.03 per hour
- Civ5: $60 / 500 hours (this is all i've played so far, still much more value to be had) = $0.12 per hour
- DA2 + ME2: $60 / 310 hours = $0.19 per hour
- FNV: $50 / 300 hours (so far this is only 2 playthroughs, will probably play more)= $0.16 per hour
- FO3: $30 / 250 hours = $0.12 per hour
- Magicka: $10 / 40 hours = $0.25 per hour
- DA:O: $70 / 210 hours = $0.33 per hour
As for TOR, the first year costs $240 for the cheapest option of the install disc.
You would have to play the game at least 1000 hours during the first year to get down to a cost of $0.24 per hour of entertainment value.
For the 2nd and subsequent years, you would have to be able to continue playing the game at least 750 hours every year in order to reach the same $0.24 cost per hour of entertainment value ($180 per year).

Quality over quantity
the 10 hours it takes for me to play through Uncharted 2 is easily 10x more enjoyable then the thousands of hours I wasted in WoW.

Personally, if I really hate a game, there is no way I would be able to continue playing it for thousands of hours.
Any of the games I bought, if I hated the game and quit playing, then the entertainment value is only equal to the total amount of time I played it.
Even if I am just bored with a game, I will not play it. At that point it has reached the limit of its entertainment value.

The technology isn't much different than the movie-era and that makes the Star Wars galaxy look too stagnant. I'm more concerned about the characters though. Has anybody seen the Return trailer? That smuggler was too much like Han Solo(that, and his model looked like Angle Eyes with a few more polygons). This Gnost-Dural Jedi from the time-line videos reminds me way too much of Plo Koon, and it's not because of his appearance, although that is a factor.
Oh, and that "good" Sith Malgus was probably written to appease the fans who want to play as Sith that aren't bad.
Of course, I'll still give it a shot.

I was interested in a game that provides less than 30-40 hours total
entertainment value, such as Portal 2, which looks interesting but is
ridiculously short, I would wait until it is on sale for less than $10
total price.

Well, with quantities like that you too make a hardcore gamer clearly, so beating "enough" hours to an MMO you like should be an absolute non-issue. If something costs you say, 12 dollars month and you end up playing it sayyy...40 hours/month I'm v sure you won't take into account wether or not it costs you 0.02 or 0.0002 /hour. Also, I'm sure any self respecting wow addict has your Obli numbers beat some ten times over. Impressive amount of Skyrim played btw.

Did you read Deceived? Malgus wasn't exactly good, he just had different ideals. He was as messed up as the other Sith in his own way. He seemed more realistic to me given that he displayed emotions other than "MORE POWER!!!!"

I haven't read Deceived, I just went by what I heard of him(which wasn't much until I viewed this thread). But if a Sith shows more emotions than just lust, than kudos to BioWare. I'm just worried about the smugglers. It's like the Kaminoans cloned Han Solo or something.

Estimate: 0 - 10 hours on weekends (range varies)
= (6 * 5) + (5 * 2) = 40 hours/week
= 40 * 4 = 160 hours/month
= 160 * 12 = 1920hours/year
Collector's Edition = $170
Subscription = $15 * 12 = $180/year
($170 + $180) / 1920 = $0.18/hour
I think I'm getting my money's worth, considering things might very well continue at this price point for many years, whereas I doubt - even if I absolutely loved it - I would be playing a single player RPG like Skyrim for that long.

LOL the skyrim figure is just an estimate as mentioned above, roughly 5 - 10 playthroughs of around 400+ hours each, spread out over a period of a several years.
As for the other titles, I don't think you are taking into account the fact that when you buy a game and never have to play any kind of monthly subscription, you can play the game over a period of years, for example, Civ 4, Oblivion, etc., I played for years and I expect to play Civ5 and Skyrim for several years as well. Eventually deriving a very high entertainment value.
I don't think I would have free time available to play any game for 1000 hours during a single year.
As for TOR, the first year costs at least $240 and each additional year costs $180 more. To reach a comparable level of cost for each hour of entertainment value, you would need to play the game for at least 1000 hours during the first year alone. ($240/1000=$0.24)

Actually this is just basic arithmetic. Nothing fanciful about my statement above.
Considering the cost for one year of TOR at $240, which is confirmed, if you play the game for 1000 hours during that year, the cost per hour of entertainment value is $0.24.
For anyone who finds a game like Portal 2 to be an acceptable value at a cost per hour of entertainment in the range of $6.25 ($50/ roughly 8 hours of gameplay), then TOR would likely be a much higher value.
On the other hand, for anyone who is accustomed to purchasing games with a much lower cost per hour of entertainment in the range of a few pennies to $0.20 per hour, to derive a comparable value would require playingTOR for 1000+ hours during the first year.
From the gameplay demo videos I've seen, TOR looks like a very fun game, but I simply would not have the free time available (probably nor the inclination) to spend enough hours playing the game to make it worthwhile for me to spend $240 on this game.
I would never presume to claim whether it would be a wise purchase for anyone else, and clearly, from the calculations you have posted above, it looks like you will get a great deal of value out of this game.

It's amusing some of the BS reasons that people are coming up with to not play this game:
"I can't get it on Steam" - Does anyone else hear a slurping noise? Look, I like Steam...but what conceivable reason does this matter? What has Valve done that they deserve money from this game? If you're worried about your friends not being able to contact you...put your away message to "Playing The Old Republic." This is one of the most absurd non-reasons I've ever heard.
"It costs a monthly fee" - How often does Activision release a new map pack for their games. How much money does additional DLC cost? You're paying 15 bucks a month for ongoing support and continual patching. As soon as you stop playing, you're no longer stuck paying 15 bucks...they keep your character on file, and you can sign up again in the future.
"Why is it online?" - Companions aren't going to do the work for you. They're meant to assist you...so you don't end up waiting for another damager, and to assist you on harder missions. The funniest thing about this complaint is people would be begging for Multiplayer (like they do for ME and others) if it weren't included. This way, you can have anyone join at any time, friend or random stranger, and you can help each other out on quests that might otherwise leave you struggling.
Don't get me wrong, there were times that I wished WoW could be done offline. It's a good game to play when you have nothing better to do...holds the same allure as Fallout 3 and New Vegas do to me. However, there are just as many times that I'm glad I can join a Looking For Group channel, and try to find someone to aid me in killing a particular baddie.
So if it helps you, basically, you're paying for 3 things: Continued bug fixing, expanding the game through free DLC, (both VIA patching), and the ability to play and get aid from friends and strangers alike.

I understand you have a certain perspective on this having had some experience playing other MMOs.
At the same time, there are many of us who have never played any MMOs before, but are fans of Bioware games and Star Wars and were considering buying TOR, until we learned about the price a couple days ago.
it's a bit difficult for some of us to wrap our heads around paying $240 for this game for one year because we have never played any games with a monthly subscription fee.
