I extremely happy that my team of super biotics, tech geniuses, genius scientists and saviours of something who is also all look like supermodels will finally have one normal guy

You have an interesting point, at least this new character doesn't look like a supermodel. He could be found on a Californian beach weightlifting next to a beardy biker called Dave.

Thanks Mineralica, nice point of view.

The verdict is still out on Vega. But not going to lie, he looks pretty damn generic. Hope his personality is great.

Haha.  I checked this board and at first I didn't see a Vega hate thread and I was like "WHAAT.  Did hell freeze over."

Can't wait for March 6th.  This place will be a total mess.

He looks like a generic military character to me. I already know my squad (Vanguard/Adept Shepard, Liara and Garrus or Engineer/Infiltrator Shepard, Garrus and Ashley) but I may have use for a tank on higher difficulties. I still hope his personality is good, because right now, all I can picture him doing is saying "Come at me, bro!"

I just wish some of you people would just come out and admit you don't like video-games. The perspectives some of you have on what Mass Effect should be are also unremarkable and cliched.

I hope he sounds like Hudson from Aliens. "Game over man! Game over!"

It's funny how people are saying Vega is shallow but they are judging the character based on appearance only. Who's shallow now?

Perhaps watching too many ZeroPunctuation game reviews has made me cynical, but I expect the best because I pay a lot for these titles. I could just play borderlands (which is a good game I enjoyed thoroughly) if I wanted poor characteristation and big guns.

You realize paying for a video-game doesn't make you part-publisher / developer of the game right? Some of you seem to think you alone are paying Bioware's wages and they're your ****es.

You say Vega is cliched and then post pictures of several cliched soldiers. Vega is supposed to be the every-man, relatable to the new player. Of course he's going to look a little generic.

EDIT:   haven't even got into the slightly homophobic issues you seem to have with the character as well...  The more I think about it the less this criticism makes sense.  If that's even possible.

I love how people are calling a character cliched just because of how he looks and with very little information on what role his character will play or what his personality will be or how he will interact. It's akin to saying, "I hate apples," when you've never had an apple and are just basing your opinion on the fact that you dislike the color red.

Interesting point. He isn't a supermodel certainly. It will take good characteristation if I am to relate to him. It is said that good science fiction should be a story about humanity.

Is there a game that you feel doesn't feature cliched characters that you can refer us to?

I think there is a lot of potential for Vega to act as a sort of template for our Shepard to mold. Being fairly ignorant of life on a galactic scale could let us impose our own views and beliefs about other species and cultures onto him and, through him, you could get a lot of great exposition regarding species specific conflicts.

Shepard has been fairly reactive in almost all conversations to date, usually being the one to ask questions and be lectured at, would be a nice change to have him impart some of his (our) knowledge for once.

ME has always had guns, some of them were big.

There's no characterisation for this character, since we haven't heard, or in fact even read a single line of his dialogue.

Do you see now that you don't really have a case here? At least complain about something relevant rather than "omg poor characterization we don't know anything about and guns that were here for years".

I suppose @Veex only time will tell, perhaps we both will be bitterly dissapointed if this new character turns out to be rather generic. Then again I hope to be pleasantly surprised with this character. Never judge a book by its cover.

In ME2 I found Zaeed to be quite a dull character, he is admittedly a dlc with less time for character development.

Will people judge ME3 with the same scrutiny as the Gofather part3 or the Star Wars trilogy?

I guess we'll see.

A controversial choice, why not introduce a moral dilema (Shepherd finds a child soldier fighting the husks on Earth and incorporates him into his team in order to save him) (See Image)

He might look tough, but James Vega doesn't work for me as a new character.

I'm sure he will be a great character to fight along side, but this photo brings out a feminine touch. (Image in link below)

Ok, so you've seen the image now; I could imagine this character mincing (gay walk) with a squeaky voice, "oh darling...what a big gun you've got". His shirt is too tight and he looks too groomed ( a bit like Duke Nukem), a real soldier looks unremarkable.

I feel there are better soldiers we could have played alongside;

...What the **** are you talking about? We don't know anything about the character.

My only issue is something seems off with his build when I look at it. Like maybe his neck is too long or something. I can't place my finger on what exactly it is, but something seems off when I look at him. I kind of wish they had gone more over the top on the muscles just so any off feeling I could chalk up to dramatic effect. As is he isn't any more muscled than a lot of guys at my gym, which is great on a logical level, but he just looks wrong.

There are "interesting people" and "dull people" without anyone writing them. They are just born.

Same with the characters - someone being seen as "dull" may be interesting for someone else (I happen to like Zaeed the Merc Scrooge)... or they can serve as a background, "anchor" - to make other, more outlandish characters more believable (I remember reading someone's post where she mentioned that having a straightlaced guy or two in a crew made of eccentric scientists, loose cannons and biotic princesses make it seem more like a military operations and not circus... don't like, don't interact, but it helps the "setting"). Same reason why so many comedies/action movies have a "straight man" to counterbalance the protagonist. Same reason why Batman is serious and dull compared to his (often way more popular with fans) adversaries.

And all this talk about the gaming ecosystem aside... Bioware can make plothole-ridden stories, but so far they nearly always *tell* them damn well and characters are their strongest suite. I doubt they'll disappoint either way.

No I'm not sick.

I was making the point that breaking away from convention would make the game more interesting.
You may disagree as to my example, and I happily accept that. But let's not forget that young men/ women have been dying as combattants in wars for centuries.

It might just be a North American perspective (I don't know where you hail from) but in the worst of human conflicts children have fought, the Battle for Leningrad, The trenches of world war 1, African conflicts, not only muscle bound professional soldiers.
