I remember when Jack was highly cliche and unremarkable. Way back when when she was first announced. Some things never change...le sigh.

He's Puck from Glee. He's gonna defeat the reapers with his singing.

Yeah, I expect someone who looks like The Situation to be brilliantly written, and even if that is the case, that would totally excuse his appearance and it wouldn't constantly make me ask whether James Vega wasn't just a personal challenge for some writer at Bioware.

THIS.

These threads poping up all the time make it seem like everyone has forgotten ME2's marketing and character reveals. Almost everyone hated Jack when the subject zero trailer came out and it pretty much stayed that way up until release. Even though Casey defended Jack's character and went as far as saying that she's his favorite squadmate, few people thought Jack was actually going to be a deep character.

.Don't judge a book by its cover. We' only know what Vega looks like and that he's for the newcomers.  People are actually saying Vega's character is cliched even though they haven't heard him speak and know nothing of his ideals, that's insane.

What I find remarkable is how people now little more than looks, name and ingame functionality and automatically assume they have a sufficient basis to judge a character from.

A sad and stupid world we live in ...

A big guy like Vega needs a big voice.
He need Brian Blessed to ensure he doesnt become generic.

He might look tough, but James Vega doesn't work for me as a new character.

I'm sure he will be a great character to fight along side, but this photo brings out a feminine touch. (Image in link below)

Ok, so you've seen the image now; I could imagine this character mincing (gay walk) with a squeaky voice, "oh darling...what a big gun you've got". His shirt is too tight and he looks too groomed ( a bit like Duke Nukem), a real soldier looks unremarkable.

I feel there are better soldiers we could have played alongside;

Kurt Russell

Sean Pertwee

A controversial choice, why not introduce a moral dilema (Shepherd finds a child soldier fighting the husks on Earth and incorporates him into his team in order to save him) (See Image)

It might seem controversial, but it would have been an editorial change from the muscular bullet spitting marine stereotype.

Thoughts anyone?

Aside from your astounding ignorance, considering we know nothing about this character beyond his name and his appearance, the bolded statements are the ones I had the most problem with.

You can criticise his somewhat stereotypical appearance without resorting to vague homophobia and sexism. What, pray, is wrong with femininity? Why is someone having a 'gay walk' a negative thing? Supposing James Vega did in fact make mention of someone's 'big gun' why would this be a problem?

Oh, I forgot. We don't like us no queers round here! Real men ain't no gayboy!

I've reached my strawman quota for the day but those are the implications in your ridiculous post.

Hating popular characters is so clichè. Now the true fans bash the characters who they don't even yet seen in action. Cool story bro. And thanks for reminding me why I almost stopped to post in the public threads.

I'm assuming you mean the homophobia and the "A video game character flirted with me and now I might be gay too!"

To any future poster, questionable comments have been removed from the first post. Anyone re-posting now should look back to glean my emphasis.

It's a valid discussion about cliche and originality of game characters.

Thank You

Quite true.

it would have been too easy to make a black cigar smoking sergeant: Halo Series, Aliens film.

I never expected Garrus to be injured so badly, that wasn't cliched I thought.

I'm fairly certain he will be a totally forgetable character, not because he is a decent guy, but because he will most likely be over exaggerated as a ''cool dubebro''.

Ah, who cares anyway, it's a Bioware game.

just throwing it out there

but our new companion had to be a beefed up stereotypical jarhead douchey looking dude? It could not have been, oh I don't know, a pragmatic sniper for instance? Still new to all the **** goin on in the galaxy but, you know, interesting and badass without having to look like roided tank? Someone that at least LOOKED like he had a brain and did not resemble morons from the cast of jersey shore?

Brian has a great voice.

There was another thread that mentioned Ron Perlman, and that's one actor that I'd really like voice James Vega. So for me I don't really care how he looks, and I assume he will be a well written character in ME3 regardless.

I just want to know who's going to be his Voice Actor!

A cold-blooded, pragmatic sniper would have been nice. Maybe we still get one with Nigel (if we are lucky).
But that Vega could just aswell surprise us in ways only the BioWare writers dare typing down.

let's say Nigel Fishnchips is not a squaddie....(and we almost know he won't be). My questions remain.
