If a certain part of the forum is established and 'not for you', then don't visit it.
I think that would be a more logical conclusion to make unless you, you know, don't give a toss about other people's feelings and just aim to misbehave.

One can post constructive criticism about something and not intend to injure the feelings of the creator, nor to misbehave.  That's the whole point of "constructive criticism."

I'm not sure how this is hard to understand.

If you say something possibly unintending to 'hurt' someone, but it does anyways, and afterwards you can deduct how that COULD have hurt that person, whose problem is that then?
Yours for having (unintentfully) said something offensive, or the recieving party for being offended/hurt?

In the case of what instigated this discussion it was blatantly obvious it would offend, you can spray it with roses all you want, it still smells like crap. Quit trying to justify it.

I am an artist. I know what it is like to have pieces I've dumped more than thirty hours of my time into be utterly eviscerated, and I take it in stride because a) that is how I get better and B) I am not my art. I'm certainly not my pixel game avatars, and neither are you.

Like other people have said, you kinda can't avoid comments on public internet forums.

Well this is Yurel. He looks similar to Guardian but with a few different tweaks (and a brighter eyecolor). He was the face I based Guardan off of.  Image IPB

So how were the insults directed at my Shepards and Chignon's remotely intended to "not injure the feelings of the creator?"

You take things too personal?

Ok.. so.. this is going nowhere. Why hasn't someone grabbed a Moderator and have them close it yet? Why are we all sitting here blabbering about insults vs feelings vs criticism or whatever is happening and closing this thread and doing nothing to make it happen?

It seems we all are hoping that some miracle will happen and make us all like each other and save the thread that was for our heroes; the Commanders. Sheploo, M/F custom... w/e.

But, really?

Yeah, and I'm a writer.

I don't, however think it's appropriate to post pics on a CHARACTER SUPPORT THREAD and then have them bashed.

What, only supermodel Shepards need apply?  Yeah, that's an excellent idea.

Just sucks knowing we as ME fans let the Commanders down. :crying: What would they think...?:(

If someone has the balls to "criticize" someone else's work with all the tact and grace of a rabid bull then they're just asking for other people to criticize their "posting style".

So if criticism is fine, expected even, then nobody here perpetuating the argument is at fault in any way. So the fault must be in the content of the criticism.

And in this case it was the tactless supposed joke that someone's Shepard was "so ugly" that it looked like a mutant. And that's not conducive to the topic at hand.

Chignon is not her Shepard. As I recall, she (?) hasn't even appeared in this thread so all of these people getting offended "on her behalf" are actually causing a huge issue where there be none at all.

Anyone that gets offended at a criticism of their Shepard needs to grow a thicker skin and detatch themselves from their avatar a little bit.

I'm an artist.  That said, whenever my teacher or a peer or even my parents had something to say about my art (ie, ways I could improve my art), I never exclaimed, "Well I never asked for it!"

I'm not justifying what has been done in this thread specifically, but making a comment on constructive criticism and how it received.

I'm postulating theories about what could make someone come out of nowhere with a pretty rude insult directed towards a specific poster's character, when said poster wasn't even part of the current discussion.

This and it wasn't even criticism, it was just outright rude.  How about I go find some of the ugliest Shepards I've ever seen and post them here then let everyone take potshots at them?  Those people didn't ask for any critique and definitely don't want their creations to be made fun of.

Criticism is certainly allowed in fan threads, or else that Anders thread has some 'splaining to do.

And really... it was just a harmless barb. Seems some Shepards here need to take the Thicker Skin upgrade. Perhaps even Witty Riposte... anything but these pages and pages of waaaaaah.

Again CONSTRUCTIVE critisism is fine. What was done really didn't fall into that category at all.
So cool to bring up, but moot in responce to what was said.

As such, my Shepards are open to criticism (even insults and crude jokes) on the same terms because I posted them.  Here's another look:

We have finally figured out how we are going to defeat the Reapers: get them to start fighting amongst themselves and while they're tearing each other apart, pick 'em off one by one.

How hard is it to understand that you don't give "criticism" unless asked?

Two words: public forum. I feel that if you, or I, or anyone puts up a picture of their work, then they have opened themselves up to comments - that would include unasked for opinions, etc.

And this is the appropriate place for that?

Yes, it is an apppropriate place. These forums and any thread in them are open to gameowners and other people in general (unless, of course, it's one of those registered owners-only sections). They are free to offer opinions about anything here, as long as it's largely civil.

Hypothetically, if I posted a femshep that I've made with, say, duck-like lips because the lighting in the CC was bad, etc., I would expect to be called on it. Heck, I'd probably even comment on it myself - but that's just me. I'm really critical of my own work and not overly sensitive about it.

How a bad joke on a character could become a source of general anger and labelled anti/ femshep? I'm shocked, seriously. What an irrational logic. :?

I have not seen as such. I totally agree that the goal is to show love and it' wasn't really funny.

But I do not understand the relevance of a charge of being anti / femshep. I do not see the connection with what was said. it was a personal case that was taken. And just one or two people have spoken. We're on the bsn. You do expect that some comments are not always constructives.

Anyway, who cares, the proportion that takes this matter is disturbing. The more you post about it, the more it becomes ridiculous. The case should have been stopped long ago.

Let's make peace, and forget all that.  And again I agree, let's only show love, that's not cool !

But the fact remains, there will still not very constructive comments. But enough !

Apparently not. When he returned later to "constructify" his opinion, you... tl;dred him.

And everyone has ignored that post he made, funnily enough.

To leap in, now there is a prime example of a civil thread on the BSN.  Not civil in that they kowtow to everyone's opinions and creations all the time but in that they know how to roll with a punch and not get butthurt over divergent or even rude opinions.  They disagree and debate, and in the end they have created a thread of substance.  I salute you, Anders thread.

I read it fine. Should I be impressed? I think not.
He said something crappy then tried to pretty it up while it was still, well, crappy.
He could have said "hey damn.. I shouldn't have said that, that could definately have hurt the creators feelings for being as blunt, uncalled for."

It would have been that simple.

Btw, I'm done with this, i'm talking to a brick wall anyways. *out*

So you didn't want him to make constructive criticism, you wanted him to rescind his criticism entirely.
