Sex sells-- well what do you want us to say? We can argue all day over the morality and ethics of discrimination, the standards and outlooks on western standards of beauty, and the validity/invalidity of hygiene. But it doesn't change that fact (historically proven) that attractive people sell extremely well.
BlondeShep putting eye liner on is hardly downplaying her abilities as a combatant and diplomat. She's not wearing a midrift revealing suit with a thong pulled up. She doesn't have giant breasts. It doesn't even look like she's got lipstick on.
Of course it does, and that type of thinking is what gives developers bright ideas like Miranda's catsuit (who then charged a small amount of money to have her wear something not so sexualized?). Like I said the character creator allows me to circumvent a character face/look that I don't like anyways, so it isn't an issue for me. I'm just expressing my opinion that the blond femshep (she isn't the only one among the choices given by Bioware) isn't a good representation of femshep the "tough super soldier."
