Is feminism still an issue? I'm confused by this. I thought they could vote and stuff already. They want more prominent rolls in scifi series now? How far down the check list of equality have they gone now?
They want more parts in scifi. Then do it. No one is stopping them. Do it.

However, in a lot of media, women tend to be shunted into the damsel in distress role

It's one thing to want legal equality, which has largely been achieved in western civilization.  This, however, is quite another.  Laws are easy to re-write.  Re-writing the basic thought patterns of half the human race is a bit more...problematic.

Men are viewed as good if they're bold and assertive.  There is a reason for this; it's in our damned genetic code.  It's a pro-survival character trait.  Deep inside, men are wired to be heroes who save damsels in distress.  That's why we like that sort of storytelling, and that will never change.  Telling men to not think this way would meet with just as much success as you would get telling birds not to sing, telling dogs not to bark, or telling the wind not to blow.

There are some very ingrained, genetically mandated, deep and abiding differences between the sexes.  Hell, men and women are just barely from the same species, and though science assures us both are rightly classified as ****** sapiens, I still question that at times.  In any case, this state of wide difference between men and women is a condition that will never change as long as the human race exists.

I don't agree with all of that but he is right, male is different, female is different, we have unique characteristics, man complements woman and woman complements man.

Feminist women and men, killed the chivalrous men :crying:

My Grandmother is one of those militant feminists from the 60s that think women are better than men. She wants men to be chivalrous and to treat them equally, a paradox I know. But in addition to that she thinks women are smarter and the more important sex. Did I mention I'm glad that the 60s are over..

I'm going to have to respectfully. While it is true that the media (Video Games, Film Industry, and especially Comic Books) are donimated by White Males, it doesn't mean that change is impossible. Over the years, there have been far better representation of both Minorities and Genders. In fact, the only group that are starting to catch up with representation are the LGBT.

That said, if you look at any fandom it becomes obvious that it's hardest to create an acceptable female protagonist. More than any other characters, people are insanely critical towards female characters, they either have to be more competant than their male counterparts (which leads to the Mary Sue accusations) or she acts too much like a stereotypical girl. It's okay for her to have feelings for a man but not if she comes across as a smitten teenage girl. She can show emotions but not to often or she's over emotional.

One thing I will say is that people are ten times more critical of women in politics than men. Just look at the two most famous or should I say infamous Sarah Palin and Hilary Clinton they are two of the most polarizing figures in american politics mainly I would argue because they are women.

End of line.
