Also, I'd like to register that a) yes femShep is awesome, butit's kind of sad that in order to get a character like that, we still have to have one that's originally written as a man. (See also: the Alien franchise)
Why do you say it was originally written as a man? As a Bioware RPG it was inevitably going to be a role filled by either gender from the start.
It wasn't written to be a strong woman or a strong man it was just written to be a strong human being. Doesn't get more equal than that

You're familiar with the difference between "main" characters and "supporting" characters from a storytelling perspective, I hope. There's a significant difference in the cultural impact between the two as well.
shepard is written to be shepard.
Wrong. The game is written with Sheploo Soldier in mind, and then certain lines and conversations are altered from base in order to accomodate the possibility of playing femShep. (In ME1 a few lines were also altered from base in order to accomodate bioticShep, which I wish they'd do more of.)
If you claim otherwise, it's because you don't play femShep. Even a single playthrough watching your animations consistently fail to line up properly because they were all rigged on a different model is enough to prove the game wasn't designed around some imaginary genderless party.

Have you heard that FemShep will finally be included in marketing with a trailer? Some of you may indeed be tired of the shouting of "equality" but this in my opinion is a huge step in gaming and a boon for the 40% of gamers who happen to be women who have for years been ignored in marketing and misrepresented in many games. Any of you that consider yourselves gamers should appreciate that.
I really doubt the femshep trailer is going to be seen by anyone but the hardcore fans who care about trailers.
Sad but true.

Every female character is rigged with the male model, it's for saving resources. It isn't some anti-FemShep agenda.

Suffice to say, FemShep is brilliant. Decent female characters are rare in games - one that is the main, playable character are rarer still. I don't care if she's basically the same as maleShep, I just see that as the world not caring that she's female - something alot of people now still can't get past (ie, go see any topic saying Shepherd shouldn't be female). She's just a person who could kick their arse, just like her male equivilent.

written with soldier in mind, not gender. try again....
and yes ive played femshep.
if you're trying to find examples of strong female characters in video games you shouldnt try and use characters who's gender is picked by the player, it COMPLETELY voids your entire argument thats all
ashley is a fantasticly written strong female character that still feels feminine and is a total badass. so use her as an example if you will, but shepard is genderless. thats true equality

Your both 100% right.
Thing is theres not many games out there which represent females in such an equal light. Their either overly sexualised or have another associated steriotype. Thats why Mass Effect is special and why people have strong views about femshep and her role. Having a woman on an equal footing to a male is unique in gaming. Thus why theres so much talk about her

No offense, but marketing a white female Shepard isn't necessarily innovative marketing. Market a game to the masses with a racial or ethnic minority lead character (male and/or female) in a non-cliche' or sterotypical role, then I'll start hazaaing! Not that I particularly care, just don't sell me this "equality" nonsense!

If by 'written' you mean the computer programming then, sure, but that's got nothing to do with who the story or dialogue was written for. It's just a practicality that they didn't have the time or resources to create two sets of animations. For the most part I never really noticed a problem.
All the dialogue is the same except for the parts where they reference gender specific stuff like the romances or the odd occasions when someone tries to hit on femshep. There's no indication whatsoever of which came first and I'm quite sure the story and dialogue was developed with both genders in mind from the start.

Julian

After years of nothing it is a step in the right direction. Most people, including myself, didn't even know gender was an option for the ME series until they began playing. It is even difficult to find this information in the main site. Dragon age had the same issue.Lucifer_Cheney wrote...

It's not that hard to find out whether you can play as a man or woman. You could always use wikipedia.

Yeah I tried saying something similar and a fire storm ensued the game like fable was written with male lead in mind when the female aspect was latter added a few tweaks here and there but basically she is still mshep. It's worse in fable where the girl will fart and pelvic thrust just as the man would. Though on a change note I'd like to see fshep run, sprint, and walk like she did in ME right now for 2 I can say she's hurt and forgive the football jog but hopefully it's gone for 3 for her.
