Okay, okay. I'll stop. I'm joking.

I tend to treat females with equality in all sense, although it bothers me that females scream for 100% equality while complaining about people who beat girls an not those who beat guys.
I mean seriously, if you want equality, fight back. That would earn so much respect in my eyes (not that I don't have any respect as it is).

Back to the topic, a better example of a female would be Ashley in ME1 and ME2 (I think BW might be going to the oversexualised route like what they did with Miranda with Ash and this worries me.) I really like the kickass female that was still obviously a female.
FemShep is irrelevant to me because the only difference is the romances and the voice acting (And, albeit very few, lines of dialog). Shepard is the character. It is neither male or female until the player chooses one. I, a male, have played as a femshep. I enjoyed it.

If Femshep got the spots for trailers in ME3, i wouldn't mind a bit because I would still be playing as both male and female. The only reason why I see it as stupid to make all or most of the ME3 trailers involving femshep would be that the markets are used to Maleshep. That's not me speaking, that's my inner marketing creature.

I'm all for equal rights between male and female. I just think that you may be looking in the wrong direction sometimes.

For a male mascot, I don't look to Manshep, I looks to Garrus or Zaeed or Jacob.
For a female mascot, I look to Ashley or Jack or Tali. (Sorry Miri fans. I respect her as a character but I do not respect her obvious oversexualisation)
I am not a girl, so I don't know if Jacob's Reaper-eating abs count as male oversexualising.

Is she now? I had no idea that this whole time she's been romancing Kaidan, Garrus, Thane and Jacob, that she was a MAN. I guess that makes all those dudes gay. Cool! :wizard:

Where are the commercials and trailers for ME1, 2, or 3 with femshep?

Bioware's making a femshep trailer, so it'll be here most likely at comic con.Image IPB

Femshep: 1

I'm not saying that wikis aren't a good source for game information, just that important facts like "You can choose your gender" should be found somewhere in a main site. Game trailers and reviews only give us very basic info to catch our attention. Many people will buy games from just that but the main site should expand on any trailers and reviews by providing other crucial info in order to sell the game. For female gamers(40% of gamers) who have thus far been excluded from marketing, this could be a major selling point. It is sad that crucial info like this can only be found in third party websites.

that 40% stastic is really really off.
that stat counts facebook games and iphone games and the like. i wouldnt qualify those as the more hardcore type games that mass effect falls under.

dont use faulty statstics to base your point, it generally undermines your argument more than it helps it. 40% is WAY off.

It's really not.

http://loosegarments...en-video-games/

http://www.womeningamesjobs.com/?p=268

http://loosegarments...ow-to-catch-on/

you missed my point.

in said statistics they count facebook games and bejeweled. a vast majority of female gamers stick to stuff like that. so no. 40% of hardcore gamers are not female, none of those links even suggest that. they give very vague evidence proving almost nothing, also most of those arent reliable sources and are extremely biased female gaming blogs. so uh, what did you hope to prove by this? to link a bunch of stuff and hope i wouldnt actually look?

im not saying females shouldnt play games, or shouldnt be into hardcore ones, its just a fact a majority of female gamers are strictly casual ones. thats all.

pretending like 40% of hardcore gamers are female is just laughable.

ashley or miranda are far better examples of strong female characters than femshep.

QFT.

My main is femshep but i don't feel that this topic is why she matters. She matters because she is Shepard, male or female.

Oh, I'm plenty bright, Sunshine, but nice try. :police: I'm aggressive because I have no reason not to be. Just because I'm female doesn't mean I'm under any obligation to be accommodating, passive, etc. I'm not going to be submissive just because you boys want to throw your weight around. You want to go toe to toe? Put 'em up, cowboy.

And the two versions of Shepard might fill the same role in the ME universe, but they're not the same character by any means. If they were, then all NPCs would treat them in an identical manner. And they don't. If they did, well, we'd already have ManShep/Kaidan romances, FemShep/Miranda romances, etc. :wizard:

Wow, OK, this is not what I expected. Color me naive, or maybe hopelessly optimistic.

I didn't mean to be cryptic in the OP. I guess Facebook-style link posting doesn't really work here.

Although the article wasn't particularly well-written, I thought it was interesting that it singled out sci-fi for kudos when it comes to gender equality. Since much sci-fi, like Mass Effect, is set in the future, the characters and stories constitute statements about what we think our world (or universe) will evolve into. I'm not a sci-fi buff, but the history of classic sci-fi is closely bound up with progressive thought and the civil rights/women's rights movements (think of how many classic stories were written during the '60s and the '70s) so it is true that in many ways the narratives in sci-fi have been ahead of their time (so to speak) in the context of current society.

If you aren't female you may not notice, but there is a definite dearth of female protagonists across all media. It is WAY better than it was when I was growing up, but still nowhere near where it could be considering that over 50% of the human species is made up of the XX contingent. I am probably older than a lot of you -- I can't cite stats, but I'm guessing that most forum users are male and in their late teens or early 20s, so this may not resonate with you. For us female users, a female character -- in any popular narrative -- who is not "the wife" or "the girlfriend" (or "the ****") is a pretty rare find. I think that it is normal to identify with the protagonists of narratives. What this means is that very few narratives have protagonists that female audience members can identify with in a way that includes gender. It doesn't mean you can't identify with characters who are not the same gender as you (although that seems to be the case for many, not all, male gamers, who don't find it a particularly satisfying experience to play as a female character) but when you get the chance to identify with someone who DOES share your gender, it can be very very cool. If you are a guy, you may not get this because most media are made with you in mind.

FemShep is awesome in this context because not only can you identify with her, you can BE her. This is why I think that Mass Effect is way awesomer than Battlestar Galactica. I've played other video games before but not become as obsessed with one as I have with this one. There are a lot of reasons why it's easy to become immersed in the ME universe, but I'd be lying if I said that being able to play my own gender wasn't significant. The only other game(s) I've gotten this into were Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, and I think a large part of that is because I didn't have to play as a character with testicles.

I mean, let's be honest: how many of the male gamers here would have gotten into Mass Effect if the only option was to play as a female character?

I am not sure why this is threatening in any way, but if I've offended anyone, I apologize. I'm currently playing my first ManShep, because I wanted to create a renegade character and Mark Meer's renegade delivery is good for endless hours of entertainment. I'm really enjoying it, but I'm not sure I would have gotten this into the game if I'd had to play as a man right off the bat.

Anyway, I had zero intention of starting a flame war, nor am I implying that FemShep is more important than ManShep, although I think her cultural significance is great.

I think you're overrating the cultural impact of the game, in 3-4 years time it isn't top dog anymore and largely forgotten by in the next generation of games. Or at least that is what I believe. Movies tend to last longer as a story is timeless but a game is judged by its gameplay, as much as I like memory lane I can never actually play through Baldurs Gate f.example again, gameplay is well, shoddy, by todays standards.

And I guess I would play the game no matter if I could only play female, but would find it odd as I can't remember a single BW game where I couldn't choose my gender ;)

I can totally relate. While I now play both Shepards about evenly, my first playthrough was with a FemShep, and it really helped me get hooked on the ME story. I don't know that I would have been as drawn in if ManShep was the only option.

No, she's not the same thing.  For one, she has a different voice actor who puts more emotion into lines, rather than MaleShep who is more reserved and allows most from what I've seen, insert themselves into being Shepard.  She also has a different body shape and armor than MaleShep and does get a few different lines as well as romances than MaleShep.  She does matter to me, because while most of you grew up playing games and watching movies with your favorite Male role model, I was having a hard time finding a female to admire.  They are few and far in between and most of them are over sexualized and not in leadership roles to begin with.

I don't expect most to even fathom this since well, you guys are the pick of the litter.

I can respect that. I really like that they have a femshep just like I like that they have homosexual relationships, it makes the game more inclusive.

you know who looks like a potentially fantastic female character?
the reinvented lara croft in the upcoming tomb raider game. 100% different from the old lara croft, she actually seems interesting....

also, jade from beyond good and evil, she was awesome.
