It happened when the legacy site closed.  Literally overnight.

Does taking a man and giving him a woman's voice and body make that person a strong female character?

shepard is not female or male.

i don't get the complaints about sexy outfits or making chars too good looking, no one goes to see movies about ugly fat people, the top movies are about good looking people, so it would not change with the gaming medium. it is what attracts us, catches our eye in the store, ladies like it or not young men drive this industry and we likes guns, sexy girls and a few bro-aliens to hang with while we blow stuff up. The vocal female minority just needs to calm down.. bioware is one of the few companies that even bothers catering to the small percentage of non-casual female gamers

I read the topic title and facepalmed.

FemShep isn't "important". MaleShep isn't "important". We make too big a deal out of these things.

...or "matters"...whatever word you prefer

There have been strong female characters in sci-fi for a long time... Princess Leia was not exactly some damsal in distress, sure she needed rescuing , but she proved she was strong and the only character in the original trilogy who -never - missed a shot. She wasn't written as a man.

Ripley strong female character... not written as a man.
Sarah Connor, strong female character ... not written as a man.

Fem shep is just one in a long line of strong female characters, however... femshep is not a strong female character.... she's a strong character who happens to be female due to player choice.

Don't get too excited by her... she's no vasquez.

Apparently, many think so.

Anyone thinking it is trying to live an illusion. Shepard was designed and written as a Male primarily, i.e. How messed up a Female Shepard looks on many animations, then had a few tweaks in dialog because of gender. Will this happen again on ME3? Probably. What Female Shepard fans should ask of BioWare is to separate each gender more, but that would cost more, so I don't think it will happen.

I'm guessing from your username that you're a "guy". Yeah, I don't expect you to understand the significance of a female protagonist from the point of view of a female gamer. That would require empathy, which you clearly lack.

Honey, don't mind them. It's just egotistical thunder-stealing and faux intellectual smartassitude. They either don't care about femShep's special significance, or don't want to admit it... I'm not sure what makes some of the people on this board so defensive about it, though.

I just don't get the fuss about it in this game, lots of BW games have had the possibility of female protagonists.
The only one I can remember that didn't have one was Planescape: Torment (and MDK2 and Sonic Chronicles but have never played those) but that was IMO forgiven because of the very strong story.

Is it because Shepard is voiced it is a big fuss? :) - And I'm not against FemShep at all, got two of those myself among the 4 I have, where I don't really like 1 of my males so I guess that makes me sexually confused...

I understand that you may not have played the other games and I can see that it is nice with a female lead when most of the action heroes are indeed men.

But I guess I'm just growing tired of the need to point of FemShep, as I stated in a an early post by me.

It is just... Good, we have a good Female VA, were even getting a trailer for the female Shepard, wheee (I hope she is an adept or a soldier)

But can we please just shut up about it and not letting past events define us as victims and just look forward not creating threads like this but rather saying something like "we appreciate female Shepard, and hope we get more of the same in your next games" or something along that, and then just enjoying our own Shepards, female or male on equal terms.

Because frankly threads like this only gets us guys to jump on the defensive, it's a natural human reaction.

I think some people are looking too far into this... Role playing games are so called because you can play a role as whatever character you choose. Having a main female character isn't revolutionary, or groundbreaking, or culturally/socially important. It's just another choice in an RPG.

As a straight male gamer I can only guess at the frustration our lady friends go through with videogames. I am glad that Femshep allows them to better appreciate the Mass Effect series and identify with Shepard. I am a big time roleplayer and I can understand the value of being able to create a Shepard you can identify with. thats why I am glad there is a femshep and now gay sheps.

The fact that this thread has 5 pages makes me disappointed.

I personally think that BioWare made the most profound statement regarding gender equality by not even mentioning it in a game set in the 22nd century. It is assumed in ME, rather than discussed.

So, it's a natural human reaction for "you guys" to get defensive when we women say "yay! an empowered female protagonist"? Geez. Anyone else find that sketchy? Are we supposed to keep quiet? Because "you guys" sure don't censor yourselves AT ALL. Why should we?
