I think some people are looking too far into this... Role playing games are so called because you can play a role as whatever character you choose. Having a main female character isn't revolutionary, or groundbreaking, or culturally/socially important. It's just another choice in an RPG.
Tell that to Alpha Protocol and the Witcher/TW2. I've been told that I'm depriving myself by not playing those games, but based on past experience, I am far more likely to enjoy and finish an RPG if I can play a female character. So, while it's nice to think of it as just another choice at character creation, it's not always there.
And before I get jumped on, I do understand why the Witcher series only lets you play as Geralt. I just have no interest in him as a protagonist in a game. I read tons of books, and watch tons of movies with male lead characters, but if I'm going to role play in a video game, I prefer the choice to create a female character.
I've been mildly obsessed with seeking out female role models since I was a small child. I guess it's still something I crave, when playing games.
