I recently bought Dragon Age: Origins off of impulse from the Xbox LIVE Marketplace. Needless to say, I love it. The problem is, I ordered the expansion off Amazon since it would take me a few days to beat the game. Unfortunately, it seems like I can't import any of my characters from Origins, or run Origins as an option while playing Awakening since I don't have the Origins disc.
My biggest issue is the inability to import my characters. The option of selecting to play Origins off the title screen makes sense, simply because it was never intended to launch immediately anyway.
Is there a way to fix this? Or are the two versions just incompatible?
Compatibility Issue, Xbox 360 Origins Digital Download, Awakening Disc

It seems there are a couple of things going on, and I can't provide you with all the answers you're looking for but I'll comment on what I do understand.
To be honest the first sentence threw me a little. I take it you are 'saying' that you bought Dragon Age: Origins impulsively? (Given that your post it is well written I don't think you would make that mistake; though I can't help but think of 'Impulse' which I think is a PC download service/vendor.)
When you insert the disc to play Awakening you find yourself unable to play Origins: I would say that is working as intended. Even with my original disc based versions I would have to play Origins using the Origins disc and similarly for Awakening. One would like to think because you have a download version you could access it despite what you have in the DVD tray. Disc-wise it's a copy protection security thing. I would hazard a guess that something similar is in place even for downloads (Gamertag, console association, etc.).
Whether the above holds true for the Ultimate Edition I cannot claim to know; perhaps someone who has that can comment so we have that information at hand in the future.
Searching the forums doesn't seem to show any threads about the compatibility of the two versions. As such I would suggest contacting EA support directly (or see if EA_AgentX is about).

I'd like to thank you for your very quick reply - it turns out that the whole save game issue was merely a lack of competence on my part - I actually had my save location on my Xbox set to a flash drive as opposed to my hard drive and forgot to switch it.
However, you did tidy up the question I had about the digital download versus the disc - it's no big deal, it's just a bit of a hassle, because when I try to launch Dragon Age: Origins versus Awakening, there's no distinction on my Xbox dashboard between the two, and I have to take out the Awakening disc or run the risk of launching the wrong game.
However, thanks for answering my question, and I've got everything else squared off just fine
.
PS
Sorry about the Impulse service confusion, haha. I meant to say that I did buy it impulsively (adj), because instead of buying the Ultimate Edition for $30, I ended up buying Origins for something around the park of $40 off the Xbox Live marketplace because I was too lazy to do a Google search and notice that an Ultimate edition even existed.

Ah, good to hear then.
The 'impulse' thing is my own rather dodgy interpretation. Things get like that when you start to take language use a bit too...seriously. It's becoming a bad habit of mine.
Anyway, have fun.
