so mostly im just wondering if anyone has just done the final battle with just four people,(or i guess 3 and a dog) and obviously the only spot where your "other companions" fight at the gates...i wanted to wait to do it myself to find out but that will be quite along time before i do it, so i just wonder if that part is skipped all together or something else happens?

I do the final battle with just my main 4 all the time. With experience, it isn't too hard. Some crowd control is handy for the marketplace, as you can possibly be fighting 3-4 ogres at once, along with emissaries. You just need to walk slow and lure the ogres to you, rather than charging ahead, and this is one time where I don't care how cheap mana clash is.
During my first or second playthroughs, I would call on my "allies" during some of the tougher parts of the final battle, including the archdemon fight, but once you know where everything is and how to handle it, they become less necessary and make these fun battles feel trivial.
The fight at the gates isn't too bad. Your party is randomly chosen from the companions that you didn't bring with your warden, though they usually do a good job of leaving you with a tank and healer, as long as they're available. You'll also pick up some pieces of armor from loot while fighting in the marketplace and alienage beforehand, so you'll have something to equip your companions with, if they're still wearing their original equipment. You'll also have npc help, so you're not completely alone. The tough fights are all with your warden and main party.

The only way to skip the defending the gate battle is to not recruit enough companions so you have no one available to defend it. You're never given an actual choice on whether or not you defend the gate.
I've read somewhere that if you didn't have enough people, then the scenario never pops up, though I've never tried it, myself. I like to recuit everyone, even if I use the same companions most of the time.

If you really want this scenario, then don't go out of your way to recruit companions, tell certain ones to leave, if the option is available, or bring Wynne+Leliana along during Urn of Sacred Ashes and defile the ashes.
I think Alistair is the one companion that you can't refuse, and then "dog" if you are a human noble.
