With the Force Mage specialisation added, she could be a very good supporter, but before I give it a try there are two things I'm wondering about:
1. What's the earliest point to get her to join the party permanently?
2. Does she gain as much exp as other companions while she's away?

either way you go gw or circle, she doesn't rejoin until the the last straw. just different points. if i remember a gw bethany shortly after the start of the war. circle not ut until you hit the gallows.
as for the xp i know answer is yes but it that simple

Yes, for as long as you have her. I was a sad Panda when I found she was going to sit a lot of the game out. She's a powerhouse with Apocalyptic Firestorm. I always thought of her as my portable artillery barrage

I like her equipment when I get Bethany back. I give her haste and it works fine. I think.

bethany as a force mage with firestorm ect. is an amazing combo. i wish i could of gotten to use her more. maybe as a companion in the future.

I actually used the console to give her Force Mage when she rejoined my party before patch 1.03 - glad that Bioware decided to do this officially! Since the Kirkwall Circle is apparently known for their ability to throw people around telekinetically, it makes sense that she would learn something while there. (I'm just glad it wasn't blood magic ...) If she joins the Wardens, well, I guess one of them could have come from the Kirkwall Circle originally.
Anyway, I highly recommend Bethany with Firestorm and the various Force Mage abilities for the endgame. Unfortunately you only get her back for a tiny percentage of the game.

I don't feel comfortable having her set everything on fire while Aveline and my DW-Hawke try to dodge things.
If I replace Merrill once Bethany returns, she'll be Spirit/Entropy/Force.

bethany is not just 'viable', she a worthy competitor, since she has access to creation tree.
