And I agree.

I was really lost with that post I first qouted.

The only thing I could add to your elaboration, for me, is that New Vegas really got the "Fallout" experiance right for me.

I liked FO3 but FNV, I felt like i was playing FO/FO2 just in a FPS manner.

Why I enjoyed Fallout New Vegas more than FO3 (which is also a great game):

FO3 Journal Quests (excluding DLC): 31

FNV Journal Quests (excluding DLC): 105

Except that the majority of quests in NV were banal fetch quests. Quantity != quality.

I can't think of one memorable quest, save the one with the cannibals. The one with Chief O'Hanlon would have been memorable for the ending speech alone, if it wasn't so horribly designed.

I have to agree that FO3 has an edge on quality of quests. None of the FNV quests are as memorable as, say, Reilly's Rangers or Temple of the Union. In FNV they are more oriented to your faction so you'll have more variety across playthroughs.  But sheesh I was tired of running errands for the NCR by the time I finished that game.

One of my favorite quests in any game I played has got to be the "Birds of a Feather" quest from FNV - where you get a job with the Van Graffs and have to work as a bouncer outside the entrance to the Silver Rush for a while, dealing with meth heads, junkies and whackos trying to enter the door. Never experienced that type of quest in previous games.

Beyond the Beef was another, simply fantastic quest.

Also really enjoyed Arizona Killer, How Little We Know, I Forgot to Remember to Forget, Heartache by the Number, For Auld Lang Synge....

In general I think what was the most fun about some of the NV quests is that there are different choices you can make and the choices actually make a difference in the game world. Especially when dealing with all the numerous factions. Even from the first important set piece in Goodsprings, you must decide whether to help the Powder Gangers, the citizens of Goodsprings, or find some peaceful solution, and however you decide, that choice has a big impact on the game world.

In FO3, there were a few of these as well, like Tenpenny Towers/Megaton, etc., but there weren't as many quests and most of them did not have so many branching path options.

In any case, IMO there were lots of excellent, really memorable quests in both games.

FNV quests are great, especially companions and factions. Running errands is not a big deal when there is plenty of reasons to go off exploring while completing quests. Can't say the same for FO3.

Yeah, Reilly's Rangers was my favorite quest.  Saving the Rangers was pretty memorable, and finding the hideout (and the decision whether or not to do it prior to saving the Rangers) was not easy (for me at least).  It was a fun quest that built on itself (finding the ammunition, etc). Not to mention you got a great reward at the end of it.  I took a set of Ranger Combat Armor, and have been wearing it ever since.

I also liked Three Dog's quest (Galaxy New Radio??) where you have to make your way to the Washington Monument and re-establish the radio dish/antenna.  That was my first time on the Mall, and we all know how much fun that was the first time in.

F:NV just feels more like Fallout, imo, but I think a lot of it has to do being set in the Western US and having far more connections to the factions and plot of FO1 and 2 than FO3 did.

I haven't played FO1 or 2 yet, but I imagine some of the similar vibe must also come from the fact that some of the same Black Isle devs who created Fallout are now part of Obsidian and worked on New Vegas.

BTW, I just checked my in-game time in New Vegas and am at 256 hours on a single playthrough. I'm almost done with Lonesome Road and still have to finish the Battle of Hoover Dam (again).

Anyone else have a ridiculously sick time like that?

I think the beauty of this game is replaying with different characters so most of my playthroughs are rather short in themselves (around 30 hours for each I'd say). STEAM says I've got 261 hours logged in total though.

My first playthrough was close to 200 hours with no DLC and no quest mods.

I recently started a new one with all the DLC + the following mods installed:
- Arwen's Realism Tweaks,
- Expensive Wasteland,
- Satchels n' Stuff
- NV Interiors
- More Perks
- Ammo Crafting Schematics
- Weapon Mods Expanded
- New Vegas Food
- New Vegas Bounties 1
- New Vegas Bounties 2
- Lawless Vegas
- Companion Share and Recruit

I think this second playthrough will take a lot longer to complete. Every combat encounter is really challenging because of Arwen's mod and I die often.

I'm well over a hundred with the first character, the one I've been doing the DLC with, but when you add in my other character I think I've probably logged around 200 hours.

@naughty99,

Yeah good. I feel better about that. I do spend an extraordinary amount of time (just in the base game) chasing challenges like energy weapons, melee, or unarmed acheivements; exploring [what else, it's Fallout], crafting and reloading [in New Vegas anyway]. I know for sure 30 of those hours were spent on Big Mountain because I was so enamored with OWB. Thus the reason I even started this topic thread.

So I know that alot of my game time is padded with self-indulgent activity.

I tend to lay out certain goals and whatnot each time I start a character. I don't really fill in backstory and all that but I like to establish what makes sense and what doesn't for that particular character. So, this always leads to the fact that doing certain things, quests, exploring certain locations just doesn't make much sense for a particular character (though I tend to exclude DLCs from that).
For example, my last character (who was a lot of fun to play) was a Legion survivalist, tough and grizzled, good at combat. That character went into a lot more caves and dangerous areas than a character who might be more of a "businessman/diplomat". Plus, wiping out NCR is always fun.

I also cap myself at level 30 (though I use a mod that increases xp needed to level as well).

Since you have a lot of factions, and a lot of different ways how things can turn out in the endings, I like to start up new characters in this game. The Legion for example may not have a lot of quests specifically devoted to them (a shame), but if you throw yourself into the hardcore Legion role, the game will just play very differently than if you supported another faction. That's fun.

I come up with character concepts at creation in order to have a plan for the storyline and perks (one character is Melee and Explosives-focused working for House, one is the equivalent of Big Guns focused and working for the Legion, one is Energy Weapons and going it alone, etc., etc.), but generally I don't limit what I do beyond what the game already places on me via reputation and karma.

I'm thinking I'll start a new one, though, possibly on Hardcore mode, to take advantage of GRA and Courier's Stash. Not a whole lot left to do on my first character except go on random killing sprees on the Strip and hunt Deathclaws (which is, of course, a snap with a fully upgraded AM Rifle and Explosive .50 BMG).

Arwen's Tweaks is great for this purpose. The default setting reduces the XP gain to 25% of the normal rate, but it's completely adjustable at any time from a Pip Boy menu. I found the game was way too challenging for me and increased it back to 100% for the first few levels.

Steam has me at 286 hours as of now on my 1st playthrough with Dead Money & Old World Blues finished and Honest Hearts being done now (I'll buy Lonesome Road when I'm done Honest Hearts) and I haven't started the Endgame yet!

I will say I generally play slower than most people and I've taken quite a bit of time over the course of my playthrough to just look at things...the night sky is especially beautiful IMO & in just the Core Game there are a lot of places I equipped the Binoculars and looked over the Horizon.

I've only been skimming the Thread because, as I mentioned I don't have Lonesome Road yet and want to avoid Spoilers so maybe someone already mentioned this: but did anyone buy the 2 latest "Equipment" DLCs? Not really my kind of thing for a DLC, but I was wondering what folks thought. Seems to me that they would've been released a lot sooner...

I'm interested too. At the moment the only thing that urges me to buy that stuff is the improved flamer fuel. The pyromaniac in me and my heavy incernator beg me to unleash some refined fiery death on my enemies

LOL!

For me, between what's already in the Game and the Items that are in the DLCs, I just can't see the need for more stuff. But, like I said...it's just not my cup of tea when it comes to DLC.

I got the Gun Runner's Arsenal and I like it, even though I am not a gun nut.

But I am also not a hoarder who gets disgustingly rich on my playthroughs, so the rather expensive high-tiers weapons make for a really nice choice on what I should plunk my caps down for. You can still break the economy of NV really easily but every bit helps, and placing more really expensive guns on vendors was a good move IMO. However, if you're not really into checking out different ammo-types and all that, then may not be the DLC for you.

I think the idea of it (seem to recall a NV dev mentioning this, probably Josh Sawyer) was to create an "item-pack" but find a better quality-for-the-money balance than most item-pack DLCs for other games do. For the cheap price, I think it's worth it easily. I'll drink one less beer next time I'm visiting the pub and it's basically paid for.

The other DLC (Courier's Stash) is not something I'd pay for as it just gives you extra items to start with. I like to start as "bare" and inexperienced as possible so that was an easy skip for me.

If you are on the fence about GRA, I'm guessing it will probably go on sale for a ridiculously low price at some point, maybe during the Steam winter sale. (Some of the small DLCs tend to go on sale for a couple dollars.)

Interesting, Leinadi...Thanks for sharing that...

I AM a "Gun-Nut" player...I have been since starting Fallout at the beginning of Spring...

The 2 DLCs are nicely priced, so they do have that going for them.

^ Yeah, me too. I'm a guns/ammo/reloader guy, so I'll probably pick it up for the next play through. Any idea what specifically is in the Courier's Stash?

It's a compilation of the various pre-order bonus items.

For example, I pre-ordered on Steam and I got the Caravan pack (sturdy caravan shotgun and lightweight leather armor).

If you pre-ordered from Best Buy or Gamestop you got other similar item packs with starting equipment like reinforced vault jumpsuit, or tribal weapons, etc.
