Yeah the worst part of the main story line for OWB is going to be fighting the roboscorpions, although there are some places you can put yourself were they can't get you, but at lvl5 its gonna feel like forever to get through all of them.

Yeah I generally wait until level 14 to start the DLCs. Seems like you're tough enough then, and you have Jury Rigging to make up for leaving many of your supplies at home.

Then again, if you're level 5 it may be easier to simply load a previous save or even start over. Takes a couple of hours getting back to the same place, and unlike OWB at level 5 those won't be hours of pure frustration.

I was looking at termokanden's build strategy for energy weapons and was translating some of that to my Guns build.  Here's a Resource for those who may find use in it.  From the Wiki; breaks down by section: Regular Perks, Companion and Challenge Perks, DLC and Implant Perks.

Well I don't know if you're interested, but this is more or less my strategy (non-hardcore but otherwise any difficulty):

Educated or Comprehension (because that way you can start with 3 int or so)
Finesse
Better Criticals
Light Touch
Sniper
3-4 AP boosters (Action Boy, Math Wrath, etc.)
Bloody Mess
Hand Loader/Vigilant Recycler (depending on weapon choice)
Laser Commander/Grunt/Cowboy (depending on weapon choice)
Jury Rigging
Them's Good Eatin' (I believe this is a massive boost for ANY build)
Silent Running
The Professional
Chemist + 2 x Implant GRX (I do not use this in my current build as it is too powerful)

My current character will end up with a SPECIAL of 9, 6, 10, 2, 4, 10, 10 before equipment, without any Intensive Training. I think that's pretty good :)

I did something incredibly stupid.

I started Old World Blues at level 5.
I am on very hard difficulty and on hardcore mode.

I think I'm gonna need some stealth boys to get past those infameous wolves that kill you in two hits.
Teach me to start a DLC at too low a level. Is this still possible?

Honestly it's probably doable, but I think it will be more of a drudgery than anything, and you'll miss out on probably the most fun DLC.  I wouldn't start any of the DLCs that early on to be honest.  You are literally entering a world of pain.  Like was said, RoboScorps are going to really hurt you at that level, and Big Mountain Night Stalkers are going to swarm you and kick your ass like nobody's business.  I'd revert to any earlier save and level up in the Mojave.

Just to pop in to say that for me OWB is the DLC that I enjoy the most of F:NV (so ridiculously wacky) and the only one I bought at full price (without regret); all the other DLCs I bought during Steam sales.

HH and DM are both very rewarding. I like how "hardcore" DM is, and HH has a very enjoyable new area. Both give you fun new weapons that are really worth using. HH is my favorite DLC followed by DM.

I would have rated OWB highest by far if it wasn't because it crashes so often on quick travel and area transitions. Seemed to get worse as the game went on, and by the end of it I just had to finish up quickly and leave. What a shame. I have had 2 crashes in total outside OWB. In OWB I have had 10+ crashes in a few hours. Something is really wrong there.

LR is great in every way except it doesn't offer any really good guns or energy weapons, which I found very disappointing, and even the new armor is only a sidegrade from the HH armor. SMMG is good, but it's not all that. And the energy weapon (whatever it was called) couldn't punch through the armor of the enemies in the same area where I found it. Good sign it wasn't thought through at all. The melee weapons in it are far, far better (Blood Nap is IMO the best melee/unarmed weapon in the game, and Old Glory is pretty crazy too).

Nope. Those are for a general ranged build. The options such as Grunt or Cowboy have to do with which weapons you like to use.

Also goes to show that I get my energy weapons build from my guns build by adding a grand total of two perks, and even with just Laser Commander you're still kicking ass with weapons such as the Alpha.

Ah, I see.  I'll post my Guns build later, but I think you certainly hit the necessaries.  Still working on mine for the next run, since I'm mixing Explosives and Melee, although I'm probably at the 85% solution already during this current playthrough.

BTW, just added the mod "Companion Menagerie" to my game, which re-writes follower scripts and allows you to bring along as many companions as you want.  It's supposed to be the better of the unlimited companions mods.  Also added "Improved Companion SandBox."  ICS adds a sandbox mode, which adds idle animations for companions to interact with the environment.  They'll walk around, sit in chairs, lean against walls, harvest a nearby plant/dead animal for food, smoke, scratch, and other things.  Just adds to the immersion.  Pretty neat actually.

I really like Li'l Devil.  Nothing quite like a .50 cal hand cannon.

Image IPB

But, I still think my favorite pistol is the Ranger Sequoia.

Image IPB

At least at this point, I'm only carrying around two pistols.  That's quite a reduction from the norm for me.

Hey, that companion mod is pretty cool!

Lil' Devil is probably the best pistol in the game. I made a comparison earlier today with Survivalist's Rifle. Either I made a mistake, or Lil' Devil actually pulls ahead with a crit build once you get The Professional. But then again, that's because The Professional is bugged and gives a flat +25% crit damage to all pistols and revolvers. Note however that Lil' Devil is MUCH less accurate and breaks more easily, so I would hesitate to say it beats the rifle.

My favorite is A Light Shining in Darkness. Only thing is you need Grunt for it to be really good. But the .45 SMG is also a beast anyway.

I am currently running around with That Gun and Lucky. Both have a high crit multiplier (2.5, even higher than Lil' Devil) so I crit 50% of the time. Add in some homemade .357 JFP and 5.56 Match ammo, and they start to become dangerous even to deathclaws. I have just a bit too much fun crafting ammo :)

I told a slight untruth. I just checked, I still carry That Gun as well. That, my Anti-materiel Rifle, and my mod TRW M14 and Mossberg 590 are the four constants in my weapon inventory since I've acquired them.

Anyone else here is a Mysterious Magnum fan?

Image IPB

I personally prefer .44 SWC as my favourite custom round:
1) You don't need to get the Hand Loader perk
2) One of the few handloads which negates some DT
3) No performace drawbacks compared to the base ammo.
4) .44 revolvers are Improved Holdout weapons

I also like Lucky as an early guns weapon.  I had a charactor who was wandering along the road to Bitter Spring @ Char Level 8 with only Lucky as a sidearm when she was set upon by an adult Deathclaw.  I went "S***!" and emptied Lucky at it in real time; first 5 shots barely phased it, then the last shot (Deathclaw was in lunging range by then) took its head off *phew*

Just for the record, this is the Hotkeyed weapon loadout for my main charactor @ Level 30 (Logan's Loophole)
1) War Club (Honest Hearts)
3) Mysterious Magnum
4) Riot Shotgun
5) All-American
6) Christine's COS Sniper Rifle (Old World Blues)
7) Love and Hate
8) Pushy

Note the 3 close-in options: my charactor has the perks Super Slam, Piercing Strike, and Slayer, plus I arranged events for her to pick up all the special Unarmed Perks.  War Club is there because with this character it swings ridiculously fast (Slayer + both ranks of Melee Hacker) - anything that can take more than a few wacks will be knock down via Super Slam ...

The Mysterious Magnum is a really good gun, and yes the .44 SWC ammo is great (along with 5.56 Match, .50 Match, .357 JFP and .45 P+). Many of the other recipes are either for hollow point ammo (and nearly all tough enemies have high DT) or something that just rips your gun apart.

For a crit build like mine though, the best guns are Lucky, A Light Shining In Darkness, That Gun and Lil' Devil. They are better for me because they have a crti multiplier of 2 (Lucky and That Gun have 2.5!). So they have at least a 20% higher chance to crit than the Mysterious Magnum.

As for your Lucky story, well, guess why they called it Lucky. It does mediocre damage half the time, and the other half limbs explode. Paciencia is even more absurd with a x2 crit multiplier and a crit damage of 110.

Interesting.
My Hotkeyed weapons at the moment are:
1. Li'l Devil - (unmodded, since only a silencer is available, even with WMX mod expansion].
2. Mossberg 590 - (add-on mod [fully modded in-game]; with 4/0 Buck as primary load.
3. 25mm Grenade APW - [fully modded]; with HE rounds as primary load.  When you absolutely have to maim and cripple Legionaire assassin squads.
4. Machete Gladius - [fully modded with +10% dam through WMX mod expansion]
5. Anti-Materiel Rifle - [of course, fully modded]; with Explosive rounds as primary load.
6. TRW M-14 - (add-on mod [fully modded in-game).  Pretty much my primary weapon.  A semi-auto .308 (M-14 variant) that I can snipe or use in close quarters. Silenced as well, and I primarily use as my sneak/crit/crippling weapon.
7. Light Machine Gun [fully modded through WMX mod expansion].  Just for slinging a wall of inaccurate lead down range!
8. Nuka-Grenade [Mad Bomber].

EDIT: BTW, I like the look of both of your characters.  Badass, comes to mind immediately.

Added on the mod Centered 3rd Person Camera.  I'm a view toggler.  I explore in third-person and fight/retrieve close objects in first-person almost always.

It's a subtle fix and moves the PC into the center of the screen with the reticle adjusted either roughly on the back of the neck or just above the head.  Also fixes, and this is the best improvement, the zoom with the third person view.  You can zoom up close and personal or out to far range to really take in the view.  (One of my biggest complaints with third person view was the inability to zoom out like you could in FO3).

I really like this mod for pure game play functionality, and as a fix to a problem I feel exists in the game.

Recommend it definitely for third person game players, or togglers like me.  Highest endorsed 3rd person camera mod on Nexus by far!

Am I the only one...or does anyone else think Ranger Ghost is just...I don't know...crazy hot?  Maybe it's just me.

Image IPB

I think it's her voice, (with a stunning voice actress), whom I've heard through other NPCs as well; primarily other female Rangers.

I wonder if there's a mod to hire her on as a permanent companion?  She looks, (and sounds), like she could handle herself well in any situation.

I pretty much can't get too far away from Ratslayer and Chance's Knife. I do start to use Rawr's Fist on my melee character, because of the unbeatable anti-DT/DR. Killing deathclaws with it has a certain poetic appeal.

Rawr's Fist...LOL. I chuckle everytime I think of him. I mean the whole chanced encounter with a deathclaw named RAWRRRRRRRR thing, that could be easily missed; to the 'wicked, tricksy' trap of a cave in to lock you in with him with a fairly brutal fight to the death; to the whole finding a conveniently dropped warhead, and then have to detonate it to extract...well, that pretty much defined my LR experience. Lonesome Road was awesome.

BTW, getting ready to start Dead Money. I'm pretty much done with New Vegas proper on this playthrough. I was going to extend the playthrough with New Vegas Bounties 1 and 2, and the build/defend your own fort mod thing (forgot the name at present), but I'm going to save those for after the DLCs and the Hoover dam fight.

BTW, I be sure pass along all your best wishes to that bastard Elijah.

Oh, and another thing...you know what is absolute BS? The fact that you can never really be sworn in as a Ranger. I've actually managed to do a pure NCR loyal playthrough, but reading on the forums there is no way for Hanlon or anyone else to make you a Ranger. I mean, I get it if your a House loyalist or a Wild Card, or certainly Legionaire, but to complete all NCR quests and be idolized, I just think it's BULLS#!+. Maybe the NCR really does suck.

I mean look at the the cover of the game box for Chris' sake!
