@happy_daiz: tearing down the Van Graffs is one of the highlights of any of my games. Even removing Cass from the situation; Firstly, I don't use energy weapons, so I don't need their stock; 2, you suffer no rep hit apparently in Free Side by taking them down, and 3: DA LOOT!

I find myself using energy weapons constantly in Fallout 3...well, since I progressed the main quest to a point where the Enclave keeps showing up. I don't know why, but I have always gravitated towards their Tesla Armor and Plasma Rifles anyway. After a point, you get a seemingly limitless supply. Last night, we turned on Liberty Prime and messed up the Enclave pretty good. I sent Fawkes into the purifier...he was always a better hero than my LW anyway.

I'm getting closer! Just need to finish up this playthrough, so I can focus on NV before Borderlands 2 comes out. Posted Image

I usually have to force myself to wait on the Van Graffs. I have many memories of getting smoked by them; probably because I always try taking them out super early. I just want Cass to be happy, dang it.

Making Cass happy is a priority, and I would never counsel taking on the Van Graffs as a level 3! Posted Image

In FO3 I used energy weapons quite a bit, but their power was more than a match for the limited variety of small and big guns in the DC wastes.  In New Vegas, the introduction of so many new and varied small arms, and reloading, almost made energy weapons obsolete in the Mojave (to me).  Now, I do like the holorifle, but unfortunately, ........(SPOILER)

you won't see one until Dead Money.

^ That's a good tip, and one I'll probably be employing once I'm back into New Vegas. Thanks!

I scrapped my previous playthrough, due to being vilified by the Legion so early on. I guess I was thinking that would mess up my ability to get the chip. Can you still get into Caesar's camp if you're Vilified? Or does that just mean lots of carnage?

If you villify prior to entering New Vegas, it's not a problem.  Vulpes (or I assume someone else if you deal poorly with him in Nipton) will approach you immediately after you deal with Benny.  He sends word that Caesar wants to see you an that all crimes against the Legion are forgiven.

I think they really succeeded in making regular Guns a lot of fun to use in New Vegas (at least compared to Fallout 3), and they are very readily available. But yeah, I see people putting Energy Weapons down (not you I mean, but others) in NV *still* and I can't for the life of me figure out why. Even a simple Laser Rifle can be *incredibly* powerful in NV now, especially if you mod it. The scope makes it a deadly sniping weapon that also shoots incredibly fast.

Lots of carnage.
Glorious, exciting, flashy, explosive, wonderful carnage.

There is STILL nothing as fun as wiping out that Legion camp, with Boone and EDE.

"THUMBS DOWN YOU SON OF A ****!" Haha.
I am saving a Holy Hand Grenade just to chuck it at Caesar.

Yep, and it's even more satisfying when playing a female character.

I'm glad they made energy weapons viable in NV, but I still never use them.  Just love the ptang of metal on metal, and there are enough fun guns that I don't feel the need to branch out too much.

Melee is pretty fun, too, it must be said.  My melee character did very well in OWB thanks to the protonic axes.

Yeah, percussion fired weapons are just so...I don't know...cathartic. As mentioned above weapons mods were yet another mechanism introduced that makes weaponry so much more fun in NV. I get the draw of energy weapons, but since I'm such a gun nut in real life, NV is like a guns sim playground for me personally, especially with guns you can mod in from Nexus. That's the real reason I just tend to overlook EWs.

I mean, turning an assailing fanatic into a pile of green goo with a plasma rifle certainly has its draw, but head shots with a 50 MG or a modded-in M-14 or M-24, are just my bag. That I can now create things like Hand Loaded ammunition for many of those guns, well...you get it.

EDIT:  Oh, and I love melee, and never ignore it.  I tend to use a Machete Gladius and end up carrying it with me for the entire game, once I get it.  With the WMX Mod, I can put a Gecko skinned grip on, temper it, and sharpen it for about +15 damage, so it is pretty much a set piece of kit for me.

I haven't used melee weapons much...well, unless you count that one Moira Brown gives you in Fallout 3, for the mole rats. Those poor little buddies. I only used it to help her out with her book, and still carry the guilt with me.

I'd forgotten how well laser rifles work on robots/turrets. I'll have to continue testing that out.

I've been favoring my F3 playthrough as of late, so forgive me that this isn't exactly NV related.

I like the idea of a Brahmin follower (as long as I can get armor for it, hehe), but one thing I always longed for in Fallout 3 was a Yao Guai follower. I keep running into scavengers that have one, and with the Animal Friend perk, I get to see the cute and cuddly side of them. If nothing else, I wish I could heal them. I found one near one of the sat com relays, that kept getting attacked by, well, pretty much everything. First it was a Robobrain, then a giant Radscorpion, then Raiders. That poor thing just couldn't catch a break.
.

Not sure if you're on the console or not but here.

^ Yeah, I'm on 360. Thanks, though!

This reminds me; I need to go pick up ED-E in my latest NV run. I repaired him, but was in the middle of getting Rex a new brain, so I haven't been back. I have Violetta's brain already, but I'm not sure which one I actually want to use. One time I used Lupa's brain, but I won't sacrifice one of Old Lady Gibson's dogs for one. It just seems wrong.

Which brain do you guys usually give Rex?

According to the wiki, if Old Lady Gibson is dead, Rey won't be there, so you have to get one from a NCR patrol dog at Helios One? I didn't know that option existed, but for no benefit to Rex, it's really not worth it.

Yeah, plasma tends to keep things nice, neat and orderly. Posted Image

Whereas, a headshot with a .50 MG Explosive round leaves you (if you're lucky) maybe an arm or eyeball to loot since since you're foes tend to go kablooey all over the area, especially if you have the Bloody Mess Perk!...and you tend to do much more damage to enemy weapons if you're free gunning, so repair and sell can be more of a chore.  So, yeah, there's a price to pay, but it sure is fun!Posted Image

I give I'm the Jet-induced Fiend brain.  He's an absolute psycho!

Which, of course, makes him just about perfect for hunting Legion assassin parties.  He will chase them half way across the map if start to run. Sometimes his kill scenes happen about a minute after you've finished a fight, because he's off chasing a retreating Legionaire that retreated from the fight about 500 yards away.

He's fun!

Has anyone read the All Roads comic? Because of that I always get Chance's Knife as soon as I can brave the cazadors, and my melee character used it her whole game except for special occasions. I love + crit chance. Combined with Cowboy and Grunt perks and the + crit chance on Joshua Graham's armor- she could wreak a lot of havoc with that little bloody knife.

Rawr's Fist for deathclaws, though.

That comic's quite good. Short though. I used Chance's Knife until LR came out and I got Blood-Nap. Because I'd rather face the Divide than fight Cazadores.

@Barbarossa - Ha! You are busy making it hard to find the corpses of those you've slain, and I'm adding a fluorescent green billboard each time I kill one. Too funny.

I think you're on to something. Lupa's brain, it is. I do enjoy that followers can't die in NV. I've spent an insane amount of time and reloads keeping Dogmeat safe in F3. Especially when Behemoths focused their attention on him, and he spent most of his time lying on his side, growling, while I applied stimpaks.

@Addai - I didn't even realize you could dig up those graves near Goodsprings until this playthrough. Derp. I did know that there were some nasty cazadores on that nearby road (found that by mistake), but I didn't know Chance's grave was there. I might have to check that out. Do you use VATS mostly, or do you freehand melee enemies?

I just want to make sure we've established the fact that it's not hard to find energy weapons or enough ammo for them, and they aren't somehow worse.

Without the DLC, they are fairly balanced with guns but IMO with a slight edge because of lower strength requirements, but at the cost of being a bit worse at the very start of the game.

With DLC, you get two clearly overpowered weapons: the Holorifle and the new recharger pistol. Don't remember reading much about the latter, maybe it went a bit under the radar, but it is every bit as overpowered as the Holorifle, perhaps even more. Its base DPS is very high, it has excellent durability, and it doesn't use ammo. Furthermore, both Laser Commander and the new ED-E laser damage perk work with it, and with that combo your DPS will go through the roof.

I use both.  VATS has the advantage of giving you a special power attack with each melee weapon, which are sometimes funny (like "Fore!" for Nephi's Driver).  But I'd really just as soon not use it.  One good thing about a combat knife is fast attack speed- you can slice and dice very quickly.

You are also more likely to crit in VATS. I think it adds 5 or 10%.

Ooh, I can't wait to try out energy weapons and melee. I have used a little of both in F3, but have mostly just stuck to rifles and shotguns in NV, thus far.

I'm attached to my combat knife and still carry it around even if I don't use it much since I tend to upgrade to the Mach Gladius later. I think it's a holdover of FO3 nostalgia, but it does swing faster and the quick slashing movement is cool to watch.

@termokanden, I don't think anyone is, or even would, dispute the effectiveness of energy weapons, especially the holorifle, which is so obviously overpowered, especially if you're perked properly. It's really just a matter of preference for many. Despite my guns preference, I keep the holorifle in my kit always (after DM that is), and I still collect MFCs (which are plentiful), and am always converting energy ammo to MFCs, like nobody's business, since I have a fairly recent love affair with MFC Nades (which I can use with wild abandon with little regard to scarcity) and MFC clusters.

With Mad Bomber perk, I finally had a use for all those MFC canisters. MFC grenades and clusters are a beautiful thing.

Yep, Mad Bomber is a really fun perk. Bit of a shame that some of the resources are a bit limited. You almost need that Nuka Cola perk to make the most of it, although yes MFC nades are already pretty awesome.

MFC Clusters make your energy pyromaniacal tendencies all right and good for the bargain basement price of 1 duct tape, 18 MFCs and 2 scrap electronics. They are a bit unpredictable once thrown, since you can't use them in VATS, but it's almost always worth the show.

They are definitely unpredictable, especially those clusters. They're good for ambushes. Lay some satchel charges, then toss the cluster in that direction, sit back and wait for the fireworks to start.

This is how I got those Lonesome Road deathclaws on the highway. Laid down a huge MFC ambush zone, ran back and fired off a rifle shot to lure them, and watched as the DC's were launched into orbit.

Never really used explosives in New Vegas. Can I still make Nuka Cola grenades? I loved those radioactive plasmabombs! God bless the Fallout soda industry!
