To all the players who play Fallout NV on PC. I just bought the ultimate edition and I was just curious, can I use a game pad instead of the keyboard?

Yes, I know for sure the XBOX 360 controller is supported automatically, because I use one. Just select it in options at the main menu. Other game pads, I'm not sure of, but assume a great many of them must be supported if the 360 controller can automatically be enabled from the main menu.

Oh, you have to use a wired 360 controller or purchase the PC wireless adapter if you don't have one.

Pff... Vulpes. Crimes? Forgiven? Hahahahaha, no! I will just use the Mark of Caesar to walk into your camp and headshot your leader!

^LOL. Yeah, I was reset back to neutral with Caesar's Mark, but on the way to Cottonwood Cove we encountered a Legion patrol and Boone opened up. Needless to say the rest of the way down to the ferry, and Cottonwood Cove itself, and, by extension Fortification Hill and Caesar's HQ, were just one long engagement. It was glorious. Eh, we had plenty of ammo and needed the XP anyway!

I was actually going to play nice, right up until we got in the bunker and activated House's Securitrons. But Boone doesn't play nicely when he sees crimson.

I never wanted them to forgive me. I wanted them to know that I had no regrets and would continue to kill them on sight.

I have had one game out of many where I did not kill Vulpes in Nipton. They are also pretty juicy targets loot-wise early in the game.

High-level Legionaire assassin squads always drop Marksman Carbines, Assault Rifles, and 12.7 Subs. It gives me a reason to use the half-billion Weapon Repair Kits I've usually crafted up to that point, to cash in big time at Gun Runners and the 188.

I love to see them charging at me...like the insane, but ultimately doomed, fanatics they are.

Plus they are some of the only enemies around in the non-DLC wasteland that can actually deal some damage. Most other enemies have horrible gear.

Agreed, they are super buffed. And if you're taking on a squad by yourself, you are going to take damage. No way around it really. But I've found that rapid firing a 25mm APW fully updgraded, with HE rounds, does wonders in slowing them down dramatically and crippling them, if you can catch them before they close distance on you; which they seem to be able to do quite quickly, all the while maintaining an almost seemingly unparallelled level of marksmanship.

Of course a single Nuka-Grenade well placed is quite the show stopper as well.

Agreed Barbarossa, IGN have poor taste if they place New Vegas at 89.

And yes, I remember Stripe! Remember the legendary bloatfly? Oh boy does that thing deal some serious damage. Even with awesome gear and Med-X I was getting torn to shreds. When you kill it and loot it, the many syringes and other goodies tell you how it got so big. I love those little details.

You betcha I remember him.  Just happened to have a screen capture handy of the LB's inventory!

51 BF Meats?  Seriously?  The rest makes sense as to why it was a mutated abomination.  And you're right; pound for pound one of the toughest enemies in the game...and of all things...a bloatfly.  Luckily I was into .50 MG Exp rounds by that point.  Still took far too long, and lingering about in there is certain death.  That thing will flat tear you a new one.

**Redirect from the Skyrim thread**

@Laser Beam:

New Vegas has excellent atmosphere and environment.  It has fantastic exploration and a very compelling storyline, with numerous side stories and freedom like you're accustomed to in Skyrim.  It is the post-apocalyptic, science fiction counterpart to Skyrim; with obviously different mechanics and combat system.  But it actually has a better storyline and companions.

Companions are way better than FO3, and even way better than Skyrim.  Each comes with a perk to help you along when hired on.  Each has their own questline, that will be triggered under certain conditions within the game.

Deciding which faction(s) you want to align with is a very compelling aspect of the game.  Whatever faction(s) you choose to be friendly with will have significant repercussions throughout the game.

Lots of customization, character and otherwise.  A real strength of the game. If you like guns and customizing them, it's the game for you.  Wide variety of weapons (energy and standard firearms); and all firearms have at least a loose archetype in the real world. All calibers are represented in game from .22LR to .50 MG to 40mm.  Lots of variety in ammunition, with approriate effects.  Energy weapons add to the fun (and can really become overpowered later on).

Crafting has been taken to a whole new level over Fallout 3, to included reloading your ammo, and handloading special ammunition.  Cool thing here is, all you have to do is walk up to a workbench, reloading bench, campfire, or active hotplate, and you can see the recipe for everything that can be crafted with that interface. It'll tell you what ingredients you'll need to craft a specific item and what level or perk may be required.

Great loot.  Virtually every item in the game can be used to make something useful.  The repair mechanic is fantastic, especially if perked (you're equipment degrades over time). New Vegas has good economy mechanics and good merchants with useful items.

The DLCs are spectacular.  Old World Blues and Lonesome Road in particular are better (as pieces of DLC) than many games.

The perk system very effectively adds to your abilities, and you can clearly see the effects of taken perks. You can play as a cowboy-type character, or a soldier-type, an energy weapon nut, or something of a mix of all these.  There are perks to support pretty much any type of play style.

Non-combat skills like speech are very effective in the game.  You don't have to play a vigilante gunslinger.  You can play the diplomat, or the nerdy science freak, or even a character who relies solely on his or her intelligence.  Sneak is a good skill in the game and you get a massive critical chance bonus of attacking out of stealth. Picking locks is much like it's counterpart in Skyrim.

Kill scenes - VATS.  I mean it, is there anything better?  VATS alone is great (think kill cams in Skyrim, but way better). Really worth the price of admission with the Bloody Mess perk.  I'm being serious here.  If you don't like twitch style gunning, you can build your character to engage all targets in VATS, which is a pause game targeting mechanic. If you DO like twitch play, it's fully functional in game.

Just a few things to help you make a decision.  Would recommend general search YouTube videos if you're still unsure as to how gameplay works. Post any question here if you have any.

Enjoy! Posted Image

EDIT: Regarding the "infamous" bugs.  I've played on both XBOX 360 and PC, and have somewhere in the vicinity of 850 hours in game, and I have not had a single game breaking bug.  So, for what it's worth, that's my experience.

Wow, thank you for that amazing post Barb! Haha, I don't think there's anyway I can't get it now. It actually sounds like it has the things I wanted in Skyrim and FO3 (which I loved so much, I don't know why I didn't seek out FO:NV earlier), so I'm expecting nothing less than fantastic. I'm getting the Ultimate Edition.

LB, your welcome. Definitely get the Ultimate Edition. It's really inexpensive for the content you're getting, and its way cheaper than just buying vanilla then adding everything else on.

The Tribal and classic packs, and Courier's Stash give you a great equipment boost up front so that you're not a total weakling. Gun Runner's Arsenal gives you early access to primo Gun Runner's items, powerful ammo types (.50 cal explosive rounds and 4/0 buck shot!), recipes for unique explosives and other useful things; and the DLCs (I'm convinced, the best ever developed for any game) make the game dramatically better!

Does anyone have any mod recommendations for this game? I've been looking at the Nexus but I've only found a few things that I would download. Also is there any good high res texture/lighting mods?

The raiders in South Vegas/ Vault 3 drop energy weapons.  Other than that you could do the Van Graff quests in Freeside.  You'll also want to do the Old World Blues DLC.

Sorry, I don't use any high res or graphics mods.  I have tons of mods running but favorites are Leather Backpack, CONELRAD Civil Defense Radio, Ragea122's Goodsprings Shack, one that lets you hire multiple companions, Nevada Skies weather mod, and the New Vegas Bounties I and II quest mods.

I played a little last night and I'm having the dilemma that my Great Khan character's game is pretty much tapped out, but I enjoyed her character so much that I don't want to start a new one.  I might end up replaying her game over and over.   Although I'm thinking of starting a science/ energy weapons character.  With the DLCs EW became a lot more viable and fun.

I've posted alot of this before, but here is my most recent mod portfolio.  I don't really use texture or graphics mods in NV, but understand that Nevada Skies is pretty badass.  Most of these are weapons mods that I highly recommend (guns are self-explanatory, so I won't TLDR you into a coma--just know that you'll get appropriate DAM/DPS/Crit bonuses as necessary):

Barrett 98B with BORS Optics:  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/46432   The last thing they never see!

Tactical Combat Set (Heckler and Koch):  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/36500

Mossberg 590 Shotgun:  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/36407  (My always carry shotty.)
Upgrade Locations:
- Extended Magazine: inside the "Search Light East Gold mine", placed somewhere in the small interior.
- Ext. Mag + Bayonet: inside the "Charleston Mine" - placed in the South-West.
- Shell Side Saddle: inside the "Bloodborn Cave" - placed in the North-West.

Rechamber - 12 gauge Lever Action Shotgun:  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/42762

44 Desert Eagle VII Limited Vegas Edition: http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/38539

10mm Pistol - USP Match Replacement:  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/36973

Browning Auto-5 (Frontier Shotgun): http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/47064

HK 416 Pack:   http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/47041   (EDIT: forgot to expound--this places a chest outside of the saloon in Good Springs which has a large variety of differently modified H&Ks.  Take what you want [silenced, scoped, stripped only with iron sights, etc] and either leave or sell the rest.)

M-14:  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/35041    (My always carry assault/sniper hybrid.)

M-24 Sniper Rifle:  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/45635

Remington 870 Sawed-Off - (870 Shorty):  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/47255

Weapon Mods Expanded – WMX:   http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/39651  Dramatically expands in-game weapon mods for weapons that were underserved for mods in the vanilla.  Firearms, energy and melee/unarmed weapons get mods.  I love this mod!

Mojave Gun Nuts:  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/45477  Turns Chet's (Good Springs), Cliff Briscoe's (Novac), and Contreras' (Camp McCarran) stores into large inventory gun stores.

ARMOR AND ACCESSORIES:[/b]

JoOs Modern Armory:  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/45203   Adds about 40 plus modern tactical combat armor sets to the game.  Located in Doc Mitchell's house.

Holster Gear:  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/44625   Adds all sorts of holster arrangements and rigs that can be worn over any clothing or armor.  Located right outside Doc Mitchell's front door.

Leather Backpack:  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/39611  Backpack that adds 50 pounds to your carry weight.  Companion BP’s are available as well.  Located at Chet's.  Lore friendly.

High Desert Tactical Gear:   http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/41410    Adds an armor store right outside of Freeside East gate.  Very expensive, but very worth it!

KDS Wearable Backpacks:  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/38690   Adds an entire line of different backpacks to Chet's inventory in Good Springs.

PLAYER HOMES:[/b]

RAGEa122 Goodsprings House:  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/45316  Best small home mod in NV.

Improved Novac Motel Room:  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/46768  Great for the minimalist.

Large Goodsprings Player Home:  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/35811  The palatial estate for Courier's in NV.

Goodsprings Home:    http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/34748  Just another good home, if one isn't enough!

OTHER:[/b]

New Vegas Bounties:   http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/37310  A must!

New Vegas Bounties II:   http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/41184  Another must!

MTUI:  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/34902  Subtle, but effective UI improvements.

Another 3rd Person View Camera:  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/38591  One of the best mods I've used.  Perfect, highly zoomable camera.  Good target reticle for 3rd person engagements and you can zoom out far enough to think your playing an isometric game.

Companion Menagerie:  http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/35177  Hire on multiple companions.  Allows you to carry certain companions into all DLCs except Lonesome Road.

Improved Companion Sandbox:   http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/44803  Great immersion mod.  Companions get additional relaxation animations while you're in down time.  Works really good with Companion Menagerie.

The Mall:   http://newvegas.nexu....com/mods/42755  A huge store located by the 188 if you want more choice and better merchant inventories.

You'll have to wait for Termokanden to weigh-in for all the locations for energy weapon loot, since they're the energy weapon guru, but Vault 34 hasd great loot, but you have to get to the Armory, which is not all that easy.  The radiation and feral ghouls will wear you out, but the loot is worth it.  Make sure you take a $#!+load of rad-away and rad-X in with you...you will need it!

You can wear a radiation suit, but the trade off is DT...in a place where you really need DT.  Your call. Recommend a rebreather (obtained through the Boomers if you 're doing the full monty of quests with them) since you might find yourself doing a little swimming in flooded rooms.
