Reviving the thread once again. Retitled to include FO3 to give us a place to chat outside the inevitable disappointments of any follow-on FO game news announcement threads.

Just started replaying FO3. Need some help with mods for FO3. Best mods for the game? Just need some suggestions. I have cleaned out my save file and am starting new, so pretty much anything can go on. Looking for textures and graphic improvement, companion mods, weapons, buildings, and quests or new areas.

I just run F3 with the usual setup, which is mostly some major mods.

Unofficial patches (self explanatory)
FWE (gameplay rebalance. Highly customizable)
Mart's Mutant Mod (adds a lot of new enemies or mutants. Lore friendly)
Weapon Mod Kits (ability to mod weapons like in New Vegas)
Redesigned (for less hideous faces and clones. Very lore friendly)
and assorted compatiblity patches.

Runs like a charm and still retains some of the vanilla flavour... plus I still haven't hit the mod limit yet.

As for quests, I can definitely recommend the CUBE Experimental and most of the new quests and adventures by Puce Moose :)

EDIT: Also, this is a VERY useful tool for checking mod conflicts or fixing them yourself. Pretty easy to use, at least to me.

You're in luck then, Flora Overhaul for FO3 was just released a few weeks ago and it makes the Wasteland look so much better. It kind of looks a bit like Stalker. But anyway, its been 200 years, something was bound to grow back during that time.

There's also Point Lookout Reborn, if you want to make Point Lookout look even creepier than it does already, reminds me of that swamp in 343 Guilty Spark when I think of it.

Thanks SC. I have Wasteland Flora Overhaul on for New Vegas. Same modder?

@Avalla'ch: I am currently CTDing about every hour and half to two hours. It's manageable for gameplay purposes. I've already done the .ini tweak which allowed me to at least run the game on my Win 7/Core i7; does the unofficial patch help at all with game stability

Wait, so you already have some mods installed or does it crash like this on vanilla? I have Win7/Core i7 as well, and I don't have any stability issues whatsoever.
But I would still recommend at least the unofficial patch because it fixes a lot of stuff.=]

EDIT: Also, there should be some 4GB patch somewhere, which definitely helps with stability (allows the .exe to use more than the usual 2GB of RAM - crappy old gamebryo engine).

Yeah, I'm already running small mods, like weapons mods, but that's about it. I've heard from a number of people that game stability is really hit and miss. Some can't run it at all, and others have varying degrees from there. I'm going to go hit the readme for the unofficial patch.

EDIT: Can't access Nexus at present. Anyone else having difficulty?

Yes, its always Vurt who makes those great mods. I was actually surprised he hadn't made one for FO3 yet but I guess maybe he didn't play it. I have to say that his fallout 3 version is the best yet.

For CTDs I guess there's this, the guy who made it has a New Vegas counterpart but its a lot more extensive and does a lot more things. Regardless, he specializes in bugfixes and I think the main reason I rarely get CTDs is by using his mods and some other stuff like Stutter Remover, don't know if FO3 has a Stutter Remover but it'd be worth looking into.

From my understanding, what Error Corrections fixes missing references or broken things that are not where they should be. Usually if the game tries to make those things work either, it throws back something unexpected, say you're supposed to be given a pistol as a reward but instead you get an assault rifle, that error isn't so bad, but when something is missing or when something is completely out of place, the game might not know what to do and then proceeds to crash. Error Corrections fixes part of that.

I heard they are consolidating their site so they can open it up to more games. I can get on sometimes, but can't download anything because NMM can't log in.

Site is operational but sporadic.

NMM has been down for about a week for the consolidation. However, was able to open it last night online. Downloaded a small mod through it, so things seem to be getting back to normal.

Just downloaded and played this one in FO3 last night:

New Mall-Franklin Mall:  http://www.nexusmods...ut3/mods/17798/

Agreed with the author that there just wasn't enough retail aftermath within downtown DC.

Adds the shopping mall experience for the FO universe, with some fairly tough (and swarming) enemies in the Penn Ave district. Interesting. I like play testing mods like this to see what the author's vision is. I enjoyed this even if it was a bit short on content. Thought he/she captured the right mood.

Not quite at the level of a hardcore combat mod, but it's trying to approach it.

And in case you missed this in the Fallout 4 thread...

New article on IGN

I hope that's legit. After the hoax and Bethesda's ambivalence to it, I'm taking an appetite suppressant, forgetting about the next game, and enjoying FO3 for all it' worth. When I've gone as far as I can with this run, then I'll start another New Vegas run.

Personally, I think this is all part of their strategy to build excitement and demand...didn't someone report recently that Bethesda would be doing some very different marketing strategies?

A couple of pics from my current FO3 playthrough:

Geoff Keighley said their "new marketing strategy is eye opening." That could mean literally anything, including that he was teed off that they didn't even send over some TESO swag for the new-and-not-improved VGX awards.

I'm not getting taken in by any rumors, ohhh noooo. I am playing a new science-energy weapons character in FNV. Lots of fun. I love all the opportunities to interact with robots and fix what ails them.

Not sure if I like Boston or not, seems like a tame location to me. I'd prefer a place with more excitement, maybe somewhere in the South.

I don't think anything that Yes Man! says is reliable. I think the only good thing about the VGX was watching Joel McHale harassing all those corporate stooges.

You will speak of our messiah with respect for he brings corporate goodness to all the neophites. Now pray with me.

I saw that, couldn't stop laughing but seriously those jabs McHale threw at him must have hurt, especially when talking about Dewrito Pope's favorite game.

Anyway, this is about Fallout, so I'll cut the crap about that Yes Man! for now.

I really ought to try that sometime. I always say that...and I'm 90% sure I'll still roll a guns character again when I'm done with this FO3 run...but I really ought to try that sometime.

I started a new Fallout 3 run over the weekend, and seem to be stuck in Megaton. I just can't decide what I feel like doing in it. Go to Arefu? Find Tenpenny Tower? Wander?

So, I decided to get some inspiration from another save that I didn't even know I had, and install all the DLC. I think I might go visit a space ship.

I know what you can do, go to raider camps and kill those morons, take their stuff and sell it, repair it if you can. Get the easy money, level up a few levels and then go do the real stuff.

I do that too, but I just can't stomach her. What an annoying person, I'm not very fond of here quest either. It gets boring at times but anything is better than blowing up Megaton. I mean sure, being evil is one thing but blowing an entire city? That's just impractical and insane.

Same here. Always start with Moira. Started with her on this playthrough...as usual. Completing the WSG really gets you moving across the map and puts enough baddies in your path that you can loot/repair/sell and get the game started.

Just took the Bloody Mess perk for the +5% DAM. I forgot what a mess it really was. I'm just looting bits and pieces. Nice damage boost, but it slows looting down as you pick through arms, eyeballs and other splatter for a few rounds or caps. I don't recommend taking it unless you really need to up your damage, or you like to leisurely loot post combat in relative cleanliness.

Pretty much every engagement is becoming this:

You could do the quests as you come across them, so it feels natural. I suppose it depends on the mindset of your protagonist.

There's a lot of nice toys on that spaceship.

Well, I ended up playing with my level 24 character who had finished the MQ. I installed the DLC, went to the crash site, and was abducted by aliens. I've picked up a lot (a lot) of stuff.

I went into the cargo hold of the ship, (which I think I must have missed before), and picked up tonnage of ammo and loot. Some of it was crap (how many shopping carts and baby carriages did they collect, anyway?) I found a computer terminal, hacked it, and got the code to unlock a remote safe. Having no idea where it was, I just wandered a bit in there, and noticed the safe, right by where they were dumping deathclaws and the like. In the safe was a MPLX Novasurge. Score!

Now maybe I can dump some of the random dupes I've been carrying. I probably don't need a Shock Baton, but I might want it. But I also have a bunch of atomizers, disintegrators, and pulverizers. I've repaired them all to max, but I'm not sure I want to take up so much room in my inventory. Oh, and I had to get a drone cannon. I have no idea how to effectively use it, but I've got one.

I brought Paulson along with me, while I cleared the Hangar. He seemed pretty happy to get some revenge.

After that, I was out of time, and stopped for the night. It's strange; I know I've completed this DLC before, but there are some parts of it that I just don't remember at all. Like the cryo lab, and the robot assembly, which I haven't gone into yet in this run. The hangar was familiar, though.

I don't think I actually took the time to listen to the abduction tapes in my other playthrough, but I did this time. Well, the ones I've collected, anyway. I'm missing quite a few at this point. It was interesting to hear a little background on each of the temp squaddies.
