^ I'm not saying it didn't sting the first time I played FO3. It did. And I also had that 'wtf?' moment.

I guess what I'm saying is that I've come to terms with it. Being able to play post-game helps. Now, it's a non-issue, at least to me. I can still pal around with my big teddy bear, no problem.

Are you able to take Charon with you? Would he offer you a better choice?

Awesome. Great Achievement. Look at that, we were chewing some of the same ground together tonight. We just wiped the Behemoth in Takoma Park as well. Artillery strikes, then finished him with a Nuka barrage...he didn't stand a chance.

Haha, that's awesome! What's on the agenda for tonight? Posted Image

^You know, I looked at my map and still have quite a few unmarked locations in the north. Figured I'd roam around up there and hit everything I can (radio relays and such), then do Broken Steel.

I do, too. I have the northernmost locations on my map, but there's a sizeable gap between those satellite towers and Megaton. It looks like I went to the East to visit the slaves, then North, to the Republic of Dave, then West to Oasis, and the surrounding area. Everything in the middle is blank.

I remembered that I could get some caps from Reilly for finding locations, so I turned some in last night, and pocketed nearly 2000 caps. Sweet!

I have way more caps than I could possibly spend, at this point. With repair at 100, and more weapons than I can carry, I'm pretty well set. All I need to do is find some Talon mercs, kill then, then take their armor, to repair mine. Then find a SM Overlord, kill him, and take his Tri-Beam laser (or simply use Alien Epoxy), and my stuff is repaired.

Although I keep breaking my hats. Those seem harder to find, for some reason. And there's no way I'm wearing anything ugly. I also gave up on Tesla Armor, for now. I haven't seen ANY Enclave soldiers wearing it, so I haven't been able to pick any up.

I discovered a secret hidey hole (well, not really) where I'd been stashing my gear, before I abandoned the run. I was thinking that I usually put stuff in the desk in the bedroom, but I was actually using the lockers downstairs this time around.

I found a ton of stuff! Hellfire Armor, a Tesla Cannon, crafting materials, etc. I have a veritable arsenal of guns and power armor - I should open my own shop. I just don't seem to sell anything, unless I'm in a pinch, and am carrying too much stuff.

Heck yeah, I baked Fawkes a cake! He's a champ! That whole endgame thing was fine - I just looked at it as him gently nudging me to do the right thing. Destiny, and all.

I'm sorry, but I had just hoped that the Wanderer's desiny was something a little more impressive than comitting suicide just because Fawkes said it was his time.

The developers did admit they dropped the ball on that. Fawkes, Charon, Sergeant RL-3 - there wasn't a reason they couldn't do it. The developers admitted their error. That said, I activate the Purifer - I simply imagine that Fawkes isn't in the room with me.

^Yeah, I remember Todd Howard's interview and he genuinely seemed embarrassed having to admit their screw up. Then Broken Steel fixed it all, and most was forgiven...except for the most 'hardcore' fans of course. I can get past the ending pretty easy now, and always activate it myself. To me, Sarah Lyons is not an option, she seems anything but a soldier; and I pretend Fawkes or Charon just aren't present like you do. Much easier to bear now with Broken Steel pre-loaded, you just wake up after.

Having said that, I did get Fawkes to do it once, where he would state that he was the best candidate due to radiation immunity and that he thought he owed it to the LW since he had saved him, and the end slides not so subtlety admonish the Lone Wanderer that in the end he was lacking when it came down to crunch time and had to let a "real" hero do the deed (with a picture of Fawkes in the background). I reloaded and did my normal ending needless to say.

^ Oh, that's right! I'd forgotten about that end slide, with Fawkes. I did the same thing, and sent Fawkes into the chamber, just to see what would happen. Needless to say, I felt like a complete schmuck, and went back to taking one for the team. It just sits better with me, that way.

'A real hero'. Well played, Bethesda.

The original ending really fit the whole alpha and omega theme. You got to see the beginning and the end of the LW.

I liked the hero theme.I prefer to think Fawkes was the one who rescued my LW from the chamber; he could survive the radiation outburst as a Super Mutant, and I suppose the mutation from Moira's experiment could explain how my LW didn't die from radiation poisoning.

That sounds just like Fawkes. The big, cuddly hero bad-ass, who shields the Lone Wanderer from ghouls, raiders, and anyone else who gets in the way of saving the world. And rescues him/her from certain death. Love it. :)

So, this is the first Broken Steel playthrough I've done. Does the LW survive no matter what with Steel downloaded?

As long as the Purifier is activated, the LW survives.

When I'm done with my Desdenova Let's Play, I think I'm going to have to grab this game on a Steam sale. Too many people whose opinions I trust say too many good things about it.

I would have preferred if they had only changed the ending so that you could be spared if Fawkes, Charon or the robot were in your party. It would have teed some people off but that would be realistic and not the handwave that Broken Steel became.

Anyway, I'm about level 22 in my energy weapons character in FNV. Haven't even thought about doing the DLCs yet, having too much fun just wandering the wastes with Raul, Arcade and Boone. The high science options are fun, like getting to scramble the Securitron at the Strip's gate, or make your own Fisto program. lol

@Joy - Hooray! Be sure to get all the DLC. Are you thinking FO3 or FO:NV, or both? I'm of the 'I love both' camp, personally. There are things in each that I like over the other one, but there's enough room in my heart for Bethesda and Obsidian.

@Addai - I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying Energy/Science. That's one of my favorite builds. I know some people don't enjoy the feel of laser, plasma, etc. weapons, but I do. Sometimes traditional bullet weapons just seem a bit raw to me, with how much kick they put out. I'm a fragile little flower; I prefer finesse and range over brute force. Hehe.

Last night, I started Operation: Anchorage. I'd gone through it before, but strangely, I only remembered the first part. The area where you have to take out the Chimera tanks, listening post, and pulse field (Paving the Way), are completely unfamiliar to me. I wonder if in a previous run, I did the first part, and abandoned it for some reason, or loaded an earlier save? Beats me.

So far, I've taken out the Chimera tank base, and left off outside the listening post. Have I mentioned that I don't enjoy the Dragoons? I mean, they're fine, but without my energy weapons, I feel like a fish out of water.

Apparently I already completed Broken Steel in this run. I still have some side and unmarked quests to do for it, though.

Sadly, we're leaving on vacation tomorrow morning, so I won't be able to play again until we get back next weekend. I'll be checking in on you guys periodically, so I don't miss anything. :)

I'm interested to see what you think. You'll have to post progress as you go. FO is a very brutal world, but just as endearing as ES...in a science fiction, dark humor, post-apocalyptic sort of way.

Do a little background and lore reading prior to playing so you at least have a feel for the world you're about to enter.  I didn't have much of a clue when I started FO3 years ago, and had a very steep learning curve to understand nuances.

I'm with Happy, I enjoyed both immensely and honestly couldn't tell you that I prefer one over the other. They're both great in their own right. I do recommend definitely starting with Fallout 3 with all DLCs. Everyone should experience the Metro and Mall! Posted Image The environments are without peer in my humble view and everything is tied to a real location. And the FO universe DLCs are among the best I've ever played.

Crafting is practically non-existent in FO3, but improves dramatically in New Vegas. There's some specialty crafting in FO3 that will be useful, but you can only craft 6 or so items, so don't expect much there. Every bit of your equipment and armor degrades over time and with use in combat, so a new mechanic for you compared to ES, will be repair. Companions are not a priority mechanic you will see, but several are available throughout the Capital Wasteland and are a welcome addition to help you fight raiders and the various mutant creatures you will encounter throughout the game.

Skills like Speech and Lockpicking will be very familiar to you. Skills that are unique are things like Explosives and Science. S.P.E.C.I.A.L. are your attributes. They determine your baseline character traits (Strength, Perception, Intelligence and such) and grant significant bonuses to the skills you are concentrating on.  Of course, loot plays as big a role as it does in ES. And there are a ton of useful mods to enhance the experience.

There is pause combat using V.A.T.S and kills scenes are far better than anything we get in ES (and make for great screen capturesPosted Image).  Combat itself is of course different than ES, and you have several areas you can concentrate in: Small Guns, Big Guns, Energy Weapons, Explosives, Melee, and even unarmed combat. So there's a lot to experiment and play with there.

The universe is brutal and you will feel it out the gate, but that's part of the enduring experience of FO.  New Vegas is every bit as amazing, and improves many aspects of FO3, but I suppose we can talk about that when you get to that point.

The universe really captures the culture of 1950's America very well. It drips with the whole anti-communist, atomic, sci-fi, and alien obsessiveness themes, juxtaposed against the cultural innocence of the time.

I can see it now: Desdenova, the Lone Wanderer from Vault 101!

That's my shot at a quick orientation, which admittedly, is a terrible substitute for the Wiki.Posted Image

EDIT: Cleaned-up some atrocious grammar.

^ Great job, Barbarossa!

The only thing I would add, without aid of the wiki, is the Pip Boy. Once you get one, take some time to figure out where everything is within it - how to hot key weapons, stimpaks, RadAway, etc.

It was a little overwhelming for me, at first, but you get used to it. Basically, it's a handy dandy portable computer affixed to your wrist. It's where you have visibility to inventory, quests, stats, notes, world and local map, etc. You can even change the radio station with it.

And, if you don't like the text color, you can change that in the main menu. I stick with the standard green or orange, but my husband always changes his to blue, which I've seen screenshots of here. (Is it a guy thing? j/k)

Keep us posted; I'd love to hear about your experience!

Edit: Oh, one footnote. Followers in FO3 can die. In FO:NV, they are knocked unconscious, but get up after the fighting is over.

Good point! The Pip-Boy is the user interface for inventory, quests, status. etc. Blew right by that one.

EDIT: Yeah, blue is probably a guy thing. Mine's blue as well.

That's normally the time I'm thinking about doing the DLCs...otherwise I'll just end up getting caught in the trap of putting it off, and putting it off even longer, leveling in New Vegas proper, just wandering; then go into the DLCs as a level 40 or better. Not a lot of fun that way.

I was thinking I would miss my sniper rifles, but with a long-range scope and other in-game mods, the normal laser rifle is an awesome sniping weapon. Only thing better than headshot before the mook knows you're there= turning them to ash before they know you're there.

Last night I was trying to figure out who was shooting blue lasers, thought maybe Boone picked up an Alien Blaster or something. Finally figured out that it was ED-E with his weapon upgrade. He's the terror of the Mojave now.

A lot of people don't like O:A but it was one of my favorites. The atmosphere was great, quite a change from the Wasteland.

@Addai - in New Vegas, the Tri-Beam is my favorite energy weapon (well, and LAER). I just can't help myself. I stupidly bought a vanilla Tri-Beam from the BoS, and mods from Gun Runners, right around the time I installed the DLCs. I then realized that all the GRA upgrades I got wouldn't work on it. Argh! I didn't know any better.

Energy weapons are super effective. I first started using them in FO3, and Plasma was my flavor of choice. Honestly, it was because there were some areas where I couldn't find bodies to loot them. The green goo piles really helped with that. Ash piles are pretty nice, too. I'm not a fan of Plasma in NV, though. Not sure why. They just seem different, somehow.

I don't think I could ever do Bloody Mess; I'd never be able to tell body parts apart, especially in areas where you end up with body piles. I must loot every single metal box, desk, locker, safe, etc. that I see, and bodies are no exception...so I went with what was easier for me to see.

Regarding O:A, I like it. It is a nice change of pace, to not have to worry about anything other than humans and their toys attacking you.

Also, I had that same realization about ED-E. I sent him with the Followers, and he got that same blue laser you're describing. He (it?) is death incarnate with that upgrade.

I think I took Fawkes somewhere else after escaping the Enclave base and had him wait there to avoid any apparent contradiction at the end (I think maybe it was Big Town, my rationalization being that he could help out if any of the northern super mutants tried to attack the town again). I don't actually think it's particularly to suggest that someone immune to radiation handle the purifier, but I also prefer the ending slides and the general tone of the story if I do it myself.

Oh no! Posted Image

It really does make too big of a mess. Most of the time you do get a torso to loot, sometimes not. Then you have to literally pick through the pieces to see if you missed anything. And I love loot. With multiple enemies, it is a total pain. It literally paints the walls red if you are indoors and at close quarters.  It's...just a mess...and actually very distracting.  If you absolutely need the +5% Damage bonus, it does help, but there is a cost.

My husband took that perk, and showed it to me, all proud. I saw that it would be difficult to loot blood splatters, and opted not to (ever) take it myself. My ADD can't take that kind of a hit. ;-)

Speaking of ED-E being boss, I was cringing up on a piece of machinery with no line of sight while the mama deathclaw was coming after us, but ED-E took out most of her health before she got in a swipe at him. Then she ran around to where I could finish her off.

She's one nasty mother.
