Man, my game has taken giant leaps forward graphically since I re-installed everything. I don't know if the screenshots do the in game graphics justice, but here it is.

Evening at the Mojave Outpost.

It looks good, at least the sky is...
Can't say for other parts until you go to 1st person camera and the resolution should be over 1280*x!

Nice!

I've been running around with Lily. Just waiting for the chance to tell her to take her meds, so I can switch over to Boone. For some Legion killing, of course. I was able to talk Keene down, so yay. I mean, it took some Naughty Nightwear, but there it is.

  Even Nightkin fall for the lingerie trick.

I also completed Veronica's quest, and told her she should decide what to do, so of course, she stayed with the Brotherhood.

I told her to leave. This character being a Follower, it was the in character thing to do. I'm not sure what's better metagame wise.

Just for you, a pic to inspire you on the possibilities for Raul's wardrobe.

I looked up the outcomes/consequences, and thought having her stay was a better decision overall. Mostly it's because I was really sad at what happens if you tell her to leave, and join the Followers. It makes me wholeheartedly agree with blowing up their bunker, tbh.

OMG, what is that helmet he's wearing? I know I've seen it before, but I can't place it. He looks cute. :)

Can someone explain what VATS is please? Well, I know what it is and what it does. I've used the feature. I guess I'm looking for the gameplay theory behind it - what is it supposed to simulate and under what circumstances in the game is it most advantageous for a player to use it. Also I don't recall the game informing me of any limitations how often VATS can be used: is this something meant to be spammed?

Well, here's what the wiki says:

The Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, or V.A.T.S., is a queuing system for Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, inspired partly by the ability to shoot specific body parts in the turn-based combat system of Fallout and Fallout 2. V.A.T.S. is also used for a cinematic combat experience.

You can read more about it here.

Usage of VATS is dependent on how many action points you have, displayed on your screen as "AP".

You don't have to use VATS (at all), and some people don't, but I like to use it to find hidden enemies, or target certain body parts, (for a bonus, based on whichever perks I have taken: Sniper, Center of Mass, Hobbler, etc.)

If you do the Operation: Anchorage DLC, it's super handy to use VATS to find/target those Chinese Dragoons.

I think once you get used to it, you'll love VATS. Posted Image

Edit. Uhh, hmm. I didn't realize this was the case. Guess I might need to temper my addiction:

There is a 15% boost in the chance for a critical hit in V.A.T.S. mode, but weapons degrade at 4 times the regular rate.

Also in New Vegas, Melee/unarmed damage is doubled in V.A.T.S. and will let you do special manuevers with enough skill.

Are the any mechanical limitations of how often you can use it? I mean can I keep pressing the VATS key and the only negative effect is that my guns degrade at a faster effect?  And why is it in the game?  Is it trying to simulate an older Fallout game where the player could actually target body parts?  Or is it because some super-duper computer chip is in my brain and the Courier can just process information supremely quickly and go into matrix mode?

The mechanical limits is your AP gauge. Appears as a bar on the lower right. The more AP you have, the more moves you can do. The gauge refills over time. You don't need to wait til its full to use it again, but you'll of course be limited by how many AP you currently have. Agility determines your starting amount of AP. There are perks you can learn that improve your amount of AP, AP Costs, and AP regen.

And yes its absolutely meant as a tribute to the original fallout game's targeting system. Its not meant to be a chip in your brain though. You're technically using your PipBoy.

There's really only benefits to using it, as far as I can see (which is clouded by my own bias and love of it).
The point of having it is to help you out. Use it to your advantage! Posted Image

Did you read the wiki link I sent? There were some New Vegas-specific details about it, if you scroll down. Or, I can just copy and paste them for you.

Fallout: New Vegas

The Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System returns to Fallout: New Vegas allowing the player to freeze combat and specifically target six different limbs at the cost of action points. It is mostly unchanged in principle from Fallout 3, although arguably weaker.

Changes
- Every melee weapon can execute a special attack, which, however, requires having a Melee Weapons skill of at least 50.
- Unarmed weapons gain Uppercut and Stomp special attacks at skill levels 50, and Cross at skill level 75. These attacks have an AP cost of 20 regardless of the weapon used.
- Base melee/unarmed damage (except thrown melee weapons) dealt by the weapon is automatically doubled.
- You take 75% damage in V.A.T.S. instead of 10%. Dying in V.A.T.S. is a very real possibility.
- The V.A.T.S. critical chance bonus is 5% instead of 15%.
- V.A.T.S. no longer inflicts additional weapon's durability damage on use.
- Enemies are less aggressively slowed down; while all enemies move slower in V.A.T.S., those not actively targeted are not slowed nearly as dramatically.

^ Yeah, I read the gameplay changes and get the reasoning why it should be used. I guess what I was mostly curious about was the rationale why it is in the game in the first place and why the courier might not want to use it - which I've got a sense now from the above responses.

Since you endorse it as much as you do, I think I'll use it more often

Well, I don't know the technical answer to that, but my take on it is that it's a device/tool that Vault dwellers were given, and you were just lucky enough to acquire one. In this case, ala Doc Mitchell at the beginning of the game.

This is why I recommended playing FO3 first; it would have probably made a lot more sense to you, as they actually get into that discussion in the beginning, as part of the tutorial. In FO3, you are born and grow up in a vault, so you get more of a background of the how/why.

It might be worthwhile for you to read about the Great War and Vault-Tec, just to get a little more backstory.

@Joy - you edited your post. Posted Image Yes, give it a chance. You might find that you prefer it. Like I mentioned, VATS is super handy for many things. You might find that you prefer using iron sights for some things, VATS for others. It's your game, so you can play it however you like.

Stealth edits are the way to go :wizard:.

I did read a little on the alternative timeline the Fallout series takes and the Great War.  When I do my lecture on WWI (the "real" Great War), I'm a little worried now that I'll unconsciously slip in references to the Thalmor or the nuclear apocalyspe at 9:47 EST.

Please tell me this game has a flamethrower

@ happy daiz: That's the Raider Psycho-Tic helmet.

@ Joy: VATS is for people who don't play shooters. It turns the combat into more of a turn-based system. It's very useful in certain situations, though FNV made it less useful than it was in FO3. I should say, FNV makes freehand sighting easier and gives it less of a handicap. VATS is really valuable for its perks. It has some pretty powerful crit-chance perks, like Better Criticals and Finesse, once you reach certain levels. It also allows you to scan an area for enemies just by hitting V. This is less useful in FNV if you have Boone's perk, which allows you to see enemies much farther away (especially when combined with ED-E's perk).

@ Barbarossa: You were complaining about Nuka Grenades being made from Nuka Quartz, right? With the Nuka Chemist perk, you can brew Nuka Quartz from regular Nukas. Nuka grenades are still powerful, but alas, in FNV they lack the purple flame that gave them such flair before. It's not as fun to send enemies to their deaths wreathed in a refreshing colorful armageddon of Nuka Cola.

Why yes, yes it does. :wizard:

Keep in mind they're governed by the Energy weapons skill in New Vegas. And the Pyromancer Perk adds 50% more damage for extra fun. That perk also adds to other sources of fire damage too, like the Shishkebab (flaming sword) and Incindiary ammo (for certain guns)

^ Joy is doing a high intelligence Energy Weapons build, so that will be quite handy.

Speaking of which, Joy, the Fiends surrounding New Vegas are a great resource for finding Laser Rifles and RCWs (and ammo), if you need them.

I'm not sure who your audience is, but you might get bonus points for references to either.

Ah, my current build, combined with explosives. I don't use flamers because they're too heavy. More of a sniper playstyle. I've been using a standard laser rifle with weapon mods the whole game. Just like the sight too much to give it up for the AER14 Prototype or whatever.

I've been sticking to the laser rifle with weapon mods, in this game, too. With high energy weapon skill, it can really hold its own. I also like how it feels.

For some reason, though, I haven't been putting skill points into energy weapons. I think it's still around 30. And yet, I'm still kicking arse. Weapon mods make all the difference.

And Lily is pretty effective, as I'm finding out. I gave her Oh Baby, and she has been doing well. Except for that one stupid mine we went into, near Jacobstown, that was full of Cazadores. She went into her rage mode, then went unconscious a couple of minutes later, with the next batch.

I find that I kind of like how she stands between you and enemies. I just want to hug her. That is, until I accidentally shoot her - it hasn't happened yet, but I'm sure it will. Time for Spray and Pray.

I'm a little late, and you probably have all your answers. But VATS usage is regulated by your Action Points (AP -- lower right of your HUD). Look at AP as stamina for VATS. Once you're out, you can't use VATS. There are perks to build up your AP pool and you can increase that pool as well by adding points to your Agility SPECIAL Skill.

APs do regenerate like stamina in other games.

No, you can't just use VATs ad infinitum. In the beginning you might get three turns and then you're on your own, so use it for critical situations. I personally am not a big VATS user, but it does get me out of messy situations. Nice to have when you do need it.

You can use VATS for thrown melee, thrown explosives, melee, unarmed, and pistol/rifle. Pretty much everything, with some exceptions.

VATS is a reboot of the turn-based mechanics from earlier Fallouts, and is technically a system run by your Pip-Boy.

There are a number of perks that make VATS more effective/efficient (each perk has skill requirements):

*Gunslinger: +25% accuracy with handguns in VATS.
*Commando: +25% accuracy with two-handed weapons in VATS.
+Finesse: +5% Critical Chance. (Not just VATS-specific -- take this no matter what ). Requirement: Level 10.
*Math Wrath: Reduce all AP costs by 10%.
*Miss Fortune/Mysterious Stranger: Wouldn't want to spoil the surprise.
*Plasma Spaz: Reduce AP costs by 20% for Plasma Weapons.
*Sniper: 25% more likely to hit your target's head in VATS.
*Center of Mass: Do an additional 15% damage when targeting the torso in VATS,
*Action Boy/Action Girl: +15 Action Points.
+Better Criticals: +50% damage with critical hits. (Not just VATS-specific -- take this no matter what). Requirements: Level 16, PER 6, LUCK 6
*Grim Reaper's Sprint: Restores 20 APs immediately after a kill in VATS.
+Laser Commander: +15% damage, +10% chance to critically hit with laser weapons. Not a VATS Specific perk, but if you are using energy weapons (specifically laser weapons), which you appear to be, you're going to want it.
*Nerves of Steel: 20% faster AP regeneration.

Hope that helps. Perk list here:

Thanks. Of course, I have to have 90 Science score as usual. I won't see that for a while! Posted Image

I do think I have a mod on that adds Nuke Cola pay machines that will dispense regular Nuka Cola, Quantum, Victory, and Quartz.  I'll have to check that. Right now, I'm good with MFC grenades; they're cheap and I can throw them like handfuls of baseballs.

I love Great Khans. Between Jack and Diane, and all the generic Great Khan NPCs, they just crack me up. If I'm not being called 'kitty cat', I'm being asked, 'holy hell, is that a Nightkin?'

Still trying to trigger Lily's recording, to get her quest. I didn't think she'd wreck Oh Baby!, but I found it on the ground after fighting Cook-Cook, and realized it was completely broken. Didn't think followers could do that, but apparently that was wrong. I gave her a Power Fist, but she's using her Vertibird Blade instead.

The Khans have great personality, though the Boomers still take the prize. "I can get rid of that robot problem for you. Just saying." "Once a Republican, always a Republican."

I want to keep my mod list down in my next run.

Does anyone have like 5 or so mods they would say are MUST HAVES?
Looking at the nexus there are just so many to get.

Right now I am getting Mission Mojave.

I've had Brotherhood Paladins say that same thing about ED-E. NCR Troopers, too, now that I'm thinking about it. Haven't heard anyone else say that Republican line, though.

I'm with you. I love Boomers, too. :D

Well, I finally wrapped up Lily's quest. It triggered inside Vault 22, of all places. So now, Boone and my Courier are busy taking out Legion hit squads. I just did the Nelson quest, and Boone wants to go to Bitter Springs, so that will be just about everyone's mission taken care of. Well, with the exception of Cass and Arcade.

I still haven't talked to Benny yet. I'm right around level 23, I think.

Went to Camp Searchlight, and started We Will All Go Together, and can't find the last freaking dog tag. I already got the one from Private Edwards, so that's not it. I searched and re-searched every body I could find, no less than 137 times, and gave up.

I've only picked up Boone thus far. Haven't even made it to the 188 to get Veronica. This is a slow run for me. But it is fun starting off so...new. Just finished Come Fly with Me. I love that quest. Just my kind of thing with that old 50's sci fi feel like OWB.

I'm a long ways from doing any one of the companion quests.

Personal preference of course, but for me, I would tack on:

Nevada Skies
NMC's Texture Pack
EVE
Wasteland Flora Overhaul
Perk Every Level
Companion Menagerie
MTUI
WMX

These are my personal Must Haves.
