@Tobi:

Hilarious. Yeah, I'm all in.

Might have to crank up an old save around Tacoma Park, disregard that whole artillery thing, and put him down like a gentleman face to face.  Lincoln's Hat Posted Image...

Well, I'm still tooling about with Follows-Chalk in Zion. I've had Daniel's supplies for a loooong time, but I'm sure he'll wait. I've been busy, dang it.

I've found all of the cairns, survivalist caches (that story might actually be more moving the second time through), and swung by The Red Gate to pick up the Survivalist Rifle.

I'm pretty sure I've fought more Cazadores than White Legs. At one point, a stray dog took a liking to Follows-Chalk, and started following him around...only to be killed by yet another freaking Cazador. I plan to have a chat with a Doctor Borous when I get to the Big MT about that! None escaped, my foot!

Seriously does anyone else channel Clint Eastwood sometimes?

I just got the Cowboy perk and love using the Cowboy Repeater and Revolvers.
Still have not gotten to fight the Legion yet...but soon.

Craig Boone and my Courier are about to set off.
Somewhere Kaiser felt a disturbance somewhere near his buns.

Cowboy always feels right in this game; revolvers, lever actions, knives, hatchets, dusters and dynamite.

I always at least start off that way.

I love the GRA challenge "Dying aint much of a living" HAH!

Also...Mission Mojave seems to have borked something. Dark skinned characters have white faces but the rest of them is dark I wonder what caused that.

The only other time I saw something like that was like on Talon Company mercs.

I got to the point where Ulysses steals ED-E. How do I ever get back to not wanting to kill him, I don't know. You don't mess with a woman's deadly cute eyebot, you just don't.

I'm also terrible at collectibles- I clicked on a poster and it said "Found Ralphie the Robot posters in Lonesome Road 1/20." 20!!! Good thing I don't care about that sort of thing.

Yeah, stealing ED-E was pretty harsh. Any plans I had for being nice to Ulysses were kind of crushed at that moment. I had to calm myself before proceeding.

I didn't find a single one of those Ralphie posters. More accurately, I found a ton of them. But it never occurred to me to actually click on it. Oops.

Ulysses is just dumb
"Oh its all your fault for delivering a parcel that set off the bombs...despite not knowing what was in it...or that there were bombs here...or yeah STILL ITS YOUR FAULT!"

I mean honestly....that was just annoying.

It makes sense if you realize he's a Caesar's Legion scout. He already had a chip on his shoulder about technology and the Old World ruining everything, and here comes this NCR kid (as he sees you) and causes another nuclear catastrophe via robot. He's looking at history and asking himself if it's always just going to repeat itself, again and again. And, he's probably just a bit insane from the rads. The reason I usually spare him is that he's a lot like the Courier, and in the end he is willing to see your point of view and realize maybe he's wrong.

I think he also feels guilt that he was the one who found Hoover Dam and led to the big confrontations between the Legion and NCR there. So in a way, he's angry at himself, too, and disillusioned.

I was interested to learn that Chris Avellone said that Ulysses was basically saying what he felt about Fallout.

Which is why refuting it as a Pro-NCR Courier is also kinda fun.
Though the best burn is one I read about:

You get an absolutely superb exchange in the unlikely event you're a female Courier siding with the Legion.
Ulysses: Usually though, followers of the Bull carry weapons between their legs as well as in their hands.
Courier: Why did you work with them, then?

Ha, so insulting his manhood? Funny.

You probably have to like the philosophy spouting types, and not take someone's opposition too personally. Most NPCs flatter and abase themselves before the player, so I don't mind one who's got some backbone. But hating on ED-E, that's just not right.

I admit I have mixed feelings about Lonesome Road because it imposed so much backstory on the Courier, and I prefer a more blank slate character.

Well you know...I freaking love my Cowboy Repeater.

4 Ghouls come running out at me, I shoot four times and they all drop dead.
Its just like damn I think that perk that makes you 20% more accurate at the cost of firing speed is really worth it!

I love my Cowboy Repeater too, but it ain't efficient enough. So I need to find the Hunting Rifle or the Sniper Rifle after some time.

The more you know...

Haven't played LR yet. Looking forward to that once I got my new rig and mods set up.

LR is definitely not everyone's cup of tea. It's very linear, you have to listen to a lot of Ulysses' blather. It's atmospheric but in an extremely bleak way. It'll either feel short if you're a hardcore FPSer, or will feel like a grind if you're into free floaty exploration and character interaction.

Thinking about it, it seems to me like Chris Avellone turning video game hero expectations on their heads. Used to saving the world? Too bad, you actually destroyed one. Ulysses all but says you're about to do the same thing to the Mojave.

But, they're still pretty effective at making the player feel like an active, competent agent. So the pessimism is somewhat palatable.

^ I agree Obsidian was very effective in making us feel like active agents and that Avellone turned everything upside down regarding player expectations. To me, there's a lot more to Lonesome Road than meets the eye. It may be predictable, or even cliché, but I think its done extraordinarily well in an overtly dangerous and devestated environment, with high tension, and clearly ties up all the DLCs, which was a superbly done side-story. The environment alone clearly sets it apart from the rest of the game, and it really drew me in.

I like LR for its over the top combat sure, but really, really like it because of the Courier’s self-discovery which you only get hints of throughout the game and DLCs. I look at it like the Courier's cleansing by fire and rebirth for lack of any other analogy. The first time I played LR, I was like…’oh, I get it now.’

You make some serious decisions at the end of LR...not just patsy ‘I'm playing a video game’ decisions either. You're going to nuke someone or pay a steep price to NOT nuke someone. To me, losing ED-E is a very steep price [discounting the magical data transfer to his “mojave counterpart”].  It's all a huge deal...and you can go see the consequences of what you do with your own eyes.  Ending a society [I believe this to be the case-- with the Hoover Dam fight really being the end of things for somebody], or not ending one [and having the power to do so] is the heaviest burden the Courier will carry, and its one you're not really expecting…well, at least I wasn’t. You may have annihilated one society before in the Divide, but it was not with the intent of doing so. In LR, things are now different and you have to make the conscious choice to do, or not do, the same thing.

Ulysses obsession/insanity is the object by which the Courier's hand is forced...the guy who has been dogging you from a distance throughout the game.  He makes you nuke the Mile, he steals ED-E, makes you run a gauntlet through the devastated environment you created. You are forced to decide to end the Legion or the NCR; or both; or neither. Ulysses becomes someone you’re built up to hate.  Then it all changes. You meet him, you come to understand things, you make a terrible choice. Then, you have to decide whether to "save" this broken [deep in the throws of PTSD if you ask me] man who is obsessed with you, who, as it turns out, is still capable of some reason. The choices are all yours; and I think they are presented well. And if you’re an independent or a House supporter, it’s a real plus, because it really tees up some options to set bigger things in motion.

If we're going to be forced into backstory, I suppose doing it in an optional DLC is the way to go. And, I think something to remember is that the Courier is sort of a blank slate. He/She is not the person they were prior to Benny, and probably never will be again. Whoever the Courier was before is gone, and whatever happened in the Divide was never intended by that previous person anyway. It's just yours to deal with now. But, the Courier is a new person, while maybe not a blank slate in the purest sense, he or she is certainly a CLEAN slate.  I like that aspect of the whole story. I also like it that Benny offered us some deniability of responsibility of our past, in effect wiping it all clean, and giving us a fresh start as a character who can become something new, all in the midst of exorcising these past demons.

Eh, just a bunch of random thoughts really, but that's how I see my characters throughout NV in the macro, and how I see Lonesome Road playing out for him.

TL;DR: I really liked Lonesome Road.

What is the minimum recommended level for fighting cazadors? They are kicking my ass repeatedly and I can't kill them unless I use VATS. And even then if there are 2 of them around me it's over.

I don't think there would be a recommended level at taking on Cazadores, but I would say after level 10(?) or so, maybe. But in any case, I would recommend a couple of VATS shots no matter what. They're pretty damn hard to hit free hand, and if we come into close quarters together, I pull out a shotgun. I do try to pick em off at a distance if possible with a rapid fire weapon. If all else fails, start chunking dynamite/grenades and wear them down.

What in the heck are you doing engaging Cazadores so early? Somebody's wandering off the beaten path aren't they? Posted Image

It's easy to get into trouble in New Vegas being curious at a low level. I wandered into a pack of Nightstalkers and Radscorpions as a level 4 or 5 my first run. It did not end well.

EDIT: Don't forget antivenom if you're stung. The effects stay with you.

I mentioned it some time ago in this thread, but in one of my first runs, maybe it was even my first, I don't remember (dang you Crispin), but I went North out of Goodsprings. And this was after Sunny Smiles specifically told me to go South. I was probably around level 2 or 3, and I died. Rather unceremoniously. Stupid Cazadores. I saw Victor nearby, and I thought I'd go talk to him. I didn't even make it that far. :)

My best advice is to have ED-E and another follower with you, and sneak when you see red lines on your compass. The ones that move erratically are usually Cazadores. Get your Antivenom ready, and snipe. Or avoid them like the plague until you have a good shotgun, with a decent Guns level - at least enough to operate the gun you're using. Some require 50, 75, or even 100. I like shooting their wings off, but personal preference and all.

Yeah, maybe avoidance is your best bet for now. Stick to the roads if you can.

Have you made it to New Vegas yet? Since you're focusing on energy weapons, I'd recommend getting some Fiends under your belt, so you can get/use their laser rifles.

On a sidenote, I also made the mistake of going up past Sloan, towards Quarry Junction. Those Deathclaws aren't messing around. Just wait until you have 2 or 3 (or more) of those on you! Hehe. Again, stealth is your friend.

@Barbarossa - wow, you were really moved by Lonesome Road. You may have inspired me to play it again...but Marked Men, and Tunnelers...and ninja Deathclaws. I will probably play all of the DLCs again, against my better judgment. It will be painful, and I will blame you, but I will love and hate every moment of it (with TLR, anyway).

Do you know how many times I blew myself up by being too close to those nukes?

Leveling is fairly quick in this game. I was about level 10 or so outside Novac when I ran into my first one. Got one-shotted twice before I took it as a serious threat. Right now I'm level 12 and got a quest to check out Vault 22 and I ran into a bunch of the f*#&@kers around some shack with a beer brewery in it. I haven't reloaded so much since I was first level in Baldur's Gate.

I killed about 15 of them ... Finally. I'm going energy and I noticed there isn't a good close quarters laser gun (or at least I haven't found it). So, yeah, distance + plasma rifle + vats + hit the wing is pretty much standard procedure with them.

So what do i do with the 20 poison glands in my inventory?

Ah, cazadores. They're a real insect, as it turns out.

Posted Image

Looks so harmless there. If you get ED-E as a companion, and Boone, you get perception boosts so you can spot enemies on your compass before they see you. Like happy said, the cazodores are usually moving erratically. Only thing moves near that fast are deathclaws. Haven't met a deathclaw yet, have you? lol

The poison glands can be used in crafting recipes, or sell them.

@ Barbarossa: I think LR brings some good story closure, and ties a lot of loose ends together. It adds some depth to what you do in the base game, making it about more than conquest for the lulz. It's a demonstration of the consequences of even small actions. Ulysses actually talked me out of nuking the legion territory- it's what he was going to do, and it's satisfying, but too heavy a price to pay considering all the innocents who would suffer and die. As Ulysses says later if you talk to him in Hopeville, the legion is going to fall apart anyway without Caesar, Lanius and the Dam.
