 I Managed to max Merill's friendship before the Mirror Image quest. Now has anyone done this and not given her the tool? Will the scenes act as though you did or didn't give it too her. Does this impact her choice to break the mirror later?

Apparently if you have her as a friend and refuse her the tool, her status will automatically flip to rivalry, minus 15. So a 100 friendship will become an 85 rivalry.

This will not impact getting her Act 3 quest - the mirror will still be inactive whether you gave her the tool or not. If you did, it wasn't enough, if you didn't, she's just looking for another way to fix it.

Whether she smashes the mirror depends only on whether you are friends or rivals with her. Rivals = she smashes it, friends = she doesn't.

No, it won't, because once friendship or rivalry is maxed you cannot alter it. 99 friendship would flip to rivalry, 100 won't.

I've not personally done that (denied her the tool with full friendship) since release, which was several patches ago, so I'm not sure if it's been altered in the meantime. It used to result in her acting as if she'd received the tool even if she hadn't.

I am actually just curious about different outcomes.

Anyways update, I had full friendship with her, did not give her the tool and after that all scenes acted as though I did give it to her. And the mirror stayed in tacked.  It was shall we say Anti-Climactic, I was expecting at least some anger, but nope she said I gave it to her. Oh well.

I actually refused her the tool and took her as a lover and have her move in with me. The fool girl kept going back to her old apartment and looking at the mirror!

She also changed the color of her outfit to all white. Does any of the other Companions change their outfits?

Yes, although Fenris and Isabela do not have as prominent change as Merrill.

What promts the changes? Neither of those changed during this adventure altho I did have to kill poor Fenris for siding wiht the Templars.
